From tongue studs to eyebrow rings, should Fremont High School students be able to show off their body piercings while at school?
That may become a topic of discussion by the board of education after a presentation by two FHS students during Monday's board meeting. Ian Koch and Chelsey Jorn attended on behalf of the staff and students of the Student Handbook advisory panel to request a change in school policy which currently allows only ear piercing to be displayed by students.
"Many other schools do not have a code like this," said Koch.
"When it was made, it probably had a purpose, but that purpose is defunct now."
In a statement written by the advisory panel and distributed to board members, FHS students said, "After substantial review of four other Class A school handbooks, the handbook committee could find no policies regarding body piercing except that in Fremont's student handbook."
Said Koch, "We don't think students should be penalized when they want to express themselves."
As far as body piercings causing disruption in the classroom, Koch said, "A hair cut can cause disruption."
Board president Rod Koerber thanked the students for their presentation. No immediate action was taken concerning the request.
