News of their missing Hamburglar mascot made members of the Fremont Rural Volunteer Fire Department, um, Grimace.

A fire department representative said the large statue is brought out about once a year and placed in a firefighter's yard as a gag to mark big events such as a birthday or anniversary.

That was the intention when Hamburglar made an appearance in the yard of a firefighter who turned 30 last weekend.

Fremont Police on patrol saw the head, thought it was stolen from a McDonald's and recovered it at 2:28 a.m. Sunday at the corner of Military and Ridge avenues.

With the McMystery solved, the fire department hopes to get its Hamburglar back.

"We are trying to get it back," the Fremont Rural representative said. "We've got to keep tradition going."
