Jury selection continues today at the Dodge County Courthouse as parties involved in a malpractice lawsuit against former Fremont oncologist Tahir Javed prepare for trial.
District Court Judge John Samson presided over Wednesday's selection process during which 42 potential jurors were questioned, according to a district court office employee. Another 45 were expected to be screened today.
The trial is set to begin Monday.
Javed and nurse Linda Prochaska are defendants in the lawsuit that alleges improper infection control practices which led to the contraction of hepatitis C by the plaintiff, a patient at the Fremont Cancer Center operated by Javed.
The case is the first to go to trial since the disease outbreak was discovered in 2002. More than 100 lawsuits originally were filed in Dodge County District Court, but most have since been settled.
Javed left the United States in July 2002 and now serves as minister of health in Pakistan's central province of Punjab. His medical license to practice in Nebraska was revoked in October 2003, one year after the Nebraska Health and Human Services sent letters to 612 people who had received treatment at Javed's clinic.
All had been treated at the clinic between March 1, 2000, and Dec. 31, 2001, the time period during which the unsanitary practices were alleged to have taken place. Of those who chose to be screened for hepatitis C, 99 tested positive.
The disease affects the liver and eventually can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer.
