FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Nate Funk, Johnny Mathies and Nick Porter each had 12 points as Creighton beat George Mason 72-52 Tuesday night in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Creighton (2-0) scored 26 points off turnovers, with 13 steals. The Bluejays held the Patriots (1-2) to 29.1 percent shooting on the night.
Tony Skinn and Folarin Campbell each had 14 points for the Patriots. Jai Lewis, a 6-7, 275-pound center, had a career-high 17 rebounds.
Creighton’s bench outscored George Mason’s 32-6, helped by Porter’s 12 and 8 points from Dustin Sitzmann and Josh Dotzler.
George Mason scored the first four points of the game, but Creighton went on a 19-4 run that put the Jays up by 11 with about 10 minutes left in the opening half.
Creighton led 36-26 at halftime and upped the margin to 14 before the Patriots made a rally to cut it to 45-39 with 13:01.
Creighton put the game out of reach, however, with an 11-0 run.
