A South Dakota woman who says she knew the family of a West Point girl abducted Saturday said the girl’s suspected kidnapper would sometimes watch the girl and an older sibling while the parents were away.

West Point authorities reviewed Monday the reported abduction of 11-year-old Lisa Maria Porter from Cuming County Saturday that triggered an Amber Alert.

Porter escaped unharmed, and she remained in protective custody Monday, the West Point police department said.

Meanwhile, Jamie Davis, 30, her suspected kidnapper, remained in custody at York County Jail on suspicion of flight to avoid arrest. Cuming County Attorney Tom Donner said Monday he would review police reports on the incident to determine what charges, if any, his office would file against Davis.

Authorities said Davis was a friend of the Porter family, which moved to West Point from Salem, S.D., last year.

Brenda Hemmah said she and her husband manage an apartment building in Salem, where Porter and her parents once lived. She said Davis lived in the same building as the Porters.

Hemmah said she evicted the girl’s parents last summer after the Hemmahs discovered another couple, and pets, were staying with the family in violation of the tenant policy. She said Davis eventually joined the couple in West Point.

Authorities reportedly pursued Davis and the girl through several counties in eastern Nebraska Saturday afternoon, eventually ending the chase south of York.

At one point, a York police officer fired at least one round and flattened a rear tire of the pickup after Davis swerved the vehicle toward the officer, the Nebraska State Patrol said in a news release.

Davis reportedly lost control of the pickup he was driving on U.S. 81 about two miles south of Interstate 80.

The State Patrol reported the pickup was then blocked by two patrol cruisers, and the girl fled from the vehicle. Davis was taken into custody and lodged in the York County Jail.
