LINCOLN - A 6-3 win over Omaha Skutt highlighted a 1-2 showing for the Fremont High softball team Saturday in the Lincoln Public Schools Tournament at the Doris Bair Softball Complex.
Jessica Spalding connected for a two-RBI double in a four-run fourth inning during the Tigers' win over Skutt. Jessye Johnson scored on a throwing error in the inning while Spalding came home on a RBI single from Madi Sorrick.
Fremont trailed 1-0 after the top of the first inning, but answered in the bottom of the frame on RBIs from Annie Hoesing and Alicia Plessner. Skutt scored in the sixth inning to make it 6-3, before the game ended due to the time limit. Hoesing earned the win, improving to 1-1 on the year.
“After Friday night's losses to Lincoln Southeast, it was good for us to pick up this first win,” Fremont coach Michael Schleicher said. “The girls got the bats going and stepped up the defense. This game was a definite step to where we want to be and where we can be as a team.”
In game two, Lincoln East scored three runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth as it defeated Fremont 8-1. Sorrick scored the lone Tigers run on a ground out by Spalding. Johnson took the loss.
“East hit the ball well this game and unfortunately we struggled at the plate,” Schleicher said. “They also capitalized off one too many walks and errors on our part defensively.”
In the final game, Fremont was defeated by Milford 2-1. Fremont tied Milford 1-1 in the top of the third inning as Plessner scored on a Shelby Miller ground out. Milford responded with the eventual game-winning run on a passed ball in the sixth inning.
Fremont, 1-4, returns to action today against Lincoln Northeast at Christensen Field.
