Fremont Bergan’s boys basketball team improved to 20-0 with a 92-39 win over Omaha Christian Academy Saturday in Omaha.

Leading 44-31 at halftime, Bergan outscored Omaha Christian 26-0 in the third quarter to pull away for good.

“They were doing a pretty good job of handling our fullcourt pressure in the first half,” Bergan coach Chris Paulson said. “In the second half we took away some of our trapping and just pressured the ball. They really had a tough time with our defensive pressure.

One game removed from a season-low four points, Wes Eikmeier led Bergan with 39 points. He hit 9-of-11 shots from two-point range and 6-of-14 3-pointers.

Bergan forward Joey Spellerberg added 18 points on 7-of-10 from the field.

“His ability to attack the basket is so important,” Paulson said of Spellerberg. “He’s an aggressive player. He did a great job of finding open gaps in the high post and against their zone and he was able to step out and hit a three too. He’s so diverse in what he can do for us.”

In the Omaha World Herald’s all-class rankings released today, Fremont Bergan became the state’s first Class D school to be ranked in the top 10.
