VALLEY -- Brian Liekhus was feeling it ... so was Wes Eikmeier. Nick Jensen, Patrick Rasmussen and Jim Wilmes also joined in on the act.
Fremont Bergan converted 14-of-22 shots from 3-point range to prevail in an 84-62 shootout with Scribner-Snyder Tuesday at Douglas County West High School.
Liekhus led the Knights’ attack as he went 7-of-10 from beyond the arc and finished with 23 points. Eikmeier added four treys and converted 13-of-15 free throws to score a game-high 29. Jensen, Rasmussen and Wilmes each hit one 3-pointer in Bergan’s Class D1-2 subdistrict playoff debut.
“Offensively, we moved the ball well and found the open shooters,” Bergan coach Chris Paulson said. “We’ve got good shooters who can knock down the shot and I wasn’t worried about our offense. I was more concerned about our defense.”
Scribner-Snyder became the fourth team to score more than 60 points against Bergan this season. The Trojans benefited from a 23-of-49 effort from the field to go with a 17-11 edge on the offensive glass.
Ethan Beck led Scribner-Snyder with 14 points and six offensive rebounds. Evan Muller scored 13 points and Brett Pribnow finished with 11.
“We have some good athletes who are quick with the ball and can attack the basket,” Scribner-Snyder coach Pat Dunklau said. “I know (Bergan) wants to gamble and get steals. If we could look to the basket sometimes, we got some opportunities. I think our kids were aggressive and played smart for the most part... Overall, I was very pleased.”
Scribner-Snyder scored the game’s first two baskets and led 8-6 midway through the first quarter, before Bergan responded with an 18-2 run over the final four minutes.
Eikmeier, Liekhus and Rasmussen each hit 3-pointers during the go-ahead run, while sophomore forward Dereck White came off the bench to lead the Knights with seven first-quarter points. White finished with 13 points and went 5-of-5 from the field.
“(White) came in and gave us a great spark offensively,” Paulson said. “He really did a good job of making some moves inside and running the floor. Our guards did a good job of finding him.”
Scribner-Snyder closed the second quarter on a 9-3 run and trailed 41-31 at halftime. Bergan then pulled away with five third quarter 3-pointers to take a 68-42 lead into a final quarter in which the Trojans held a 20-16 edge.
The 62-point output was Scribner-Snyder’s highest since scoring 67 in its season opener with a Lyons-Decatur team that went on to go 0-20.
“I don’t think we brought it defensively with the intensity we needed to start the ballgame, and that was evident by the offensive rebounds Scribner got,” Paulson said. “They do a great job of getting after rebounds and I just didn’t think we battled that hard on that end of things. We can’t just try and outscore everybody. We’ve got to play better defense.”
Mead prevailed in the other subdistrict semifinal with a 51-39 win over Clarkson.
Bergan, 22-0, will face the 19-2 Raiders 6 p.m. Thursday in the subdistrict finals at DC West. Scribner-Snyder finishes its season with a 6-14 record.
