The Gatorade Company, in partnership with RISE Magazine, announced today that Wes Eikmeier of Fremont Bergan is its 2007-08 Gatorade Nebraska Player of the Year.

The award is the second for Eikmeier in as many years. The Bergan standout averaged 31.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.1 assists this season as he led the Knights to an undefeated record and the Class D-1 state championship.

Eikmeier set the Class D-1 state tournament single-game and three-game scoring records this season, netting 43 points in Bergan’s 56-43 state title victory over Humphrey St. Francis and totaling 107 points in the tournament. He concluded his career as Bergan’s all-time leading scorer with 2,195 points.

“When it’s all said and done, he’s got to be one of the greatest players in Nebraska history,” Fremont Bergan coach Chris Paulson said. “He may not be the best, but he deserves to be in the conversation. He can shoot the 3, he can shoot the mid-range shot and he can get to the hole and finish He’s probably the best ever small-school player. He’s very unselfish. All he cared about was winning.”

Eikmeier has maintained a 3.39 GPA. He is a member of the school’s chess club, he volunteers as part of numerous community-service initiatives on behalf of the National Honor Society in addition to mentoring youth athletes as a YMCA basketball coach.

Eikmeier will play next season at Iowa State.
