Candidates come out for spring banquet

Wednesday evening brought a unique opportunity for Dodge County Democrats.

Not only were the two front runners for the U.S. Senate Democratic Primary, Scott Kleeb and Tony Raimondo in attendance for the Dodge County Spring Democrats Banquet at the Scribner Steakhouse, but also, Fremonter Larry Marvin and the candidate for the United States House of Representative for the 1st District, Max Yashirin.

The emcee for the evening was the District 15 Democrat candidate for the Unicameral and Fremont native Richard Register.

The event allowed each candidate equal time to speak their beliefs, followed by a question and answer session where all national candidates could elaborate on their platforms.

Register opened the evening’s event with thoughts on the upcoming political elections.

“It is a different type of election year we have this year,” Register said, “Democrats are being offered the gauntlet of leadership and we need to take it.”

Later, Register offered, “We are the Democratic party. We are not going to tell you how to live your family values. We are going to live family values. We are not going to teach you how to hate. We are going to teach you how to cooperate.”

Scott Kleeb

Kleeb began with the reasons he became involved regarding politics as a candidate for the 3rd Congressional District in 2003-04.

“There was something happening in our politics. There was something happening in our country not being talked about. And, like a lot of people in this room, I became frustrated,” Kleeb said in reference to the economy, the environment and health care.

“15 million people came together (Super Tuesday) to say ‘Have you had enough?’ ‘Damn right, I’ve had enough,” Kleeb said regarding the extensive Democratic party participation in the February caucuses.

In addition, Kleeb stated, “I’m reminded of a story back in 2006, that happened up in Hemmingford, Nebraska ... This guy comes up to me and says, ‘I’ve never voted for a Democrat before. Of course, I’ve never met one before.’”

Kleeb continued “’You know, when I hear you talk about health care ... and education, and investing in your kids’ education from birth through college, I’m for that, too.’” the man added that he, too, is for universal health care and energy management, just as Kleeb.

“Historic numbers of Nebraskans are for those issues,” Kleeb said, “The reason that you all are here tonight is because you are part of this effort to take back this government.”

“We want politics to be about service, not self,” Kleeb said, “Mike Johanns has been about self. His entire election, his entire service has been about self.”

“This election, more than anything else, is about each of us engaging in politics and we did that in the Third District. And, we have to continue to do that across the state,” Kleeb concluded, asking attendees show their support in voting for him.

Tony Raimondo

Raimondo, a former Republican, shared his reasons for running for office.

“Who has the right experience, and the values to make that change in Washington, D.C.?” Raimondo began.

“My position is, the biggest threat that we have to our quality of life for our children and for our grandchildren is not developing nations, it is our politicians ... and it relates to the gridlock and our politicians in Washington, D.C.,” he continued.

Raimondo also spoke of his belief in small business and the individual.

“Eighty percent of Nebraska’s companies are small- and medium-sized companies ... We have got to keep our working families healthy, we have go to make our companies globally competitive, and that is what I have been doing my entire life,” Raimondo said.

Raimondo added that part of the success that he has had through Behlen Industries has come through investing in his employees and giving them interest in the company through incentives such as profit sharing.

“Nine out of the last 11 Senate races have gone to Democrats,” Raimondo continued, “As we moved Behlen from a failed company, I am really pleased to say that we pursued the leading edge of teamwork, we pursued in addition to continuous teamwork, and we have great health care programs.”

Raimondo also noted that since 2002, the corporate health care cost has more than tripled putting a squeeze on the average American.

“The only way to change that, is to get the right capabilities into our leaders in Washington,” Raimondo concluded.

Raimondo also touched on his three-point plan for extricating the United States Military from Iraq.

According to Raimondo, first we need to honor our troops and support the Iraqis.

Secondly, we have to reasonably keep our word with Iraq and establish a fair timetable for withdrawal.

Finally, according to Raimondo, we need a feasible ‘exit strategy,” which includes rebuilding the trust of our allies.

Larry Marvin

For more information go to www.fremonttribune.com for an in-depth look at Larry Marvin.

“I am the only candidate to fully endorse the party platform,” Marvin said.

“I hear a lot of people talk about abortion. I have a zero tolerance for genocide, and I support that we have a tax on genocide on corporations and individuals that invest their money in it,” Marvin added later in his introduction.

Question and Answer:

Audience members asked questions of each of the candidates. The following is a sampling.

1. How do you address the problem of illegal immigration?

Kleeb: Wishes for a fair and open process for those wanting to become citizens, as well as repercussions for those here illegally, possibly in the form of fines, adding, “We do want you here, but we also want you to respect our laws.”

Marvin: “To me, most of the irritations, at our coffee klatches sometimes in beer joints, it is Republican propaganda. These Republicans haven’t done anything to protect our women, they haven’t done anything to protect 9-11. And, now they want us to build walls, and, I want to tear down walls.”

Marvin added that he attributed many of the current border issues to Homeland Security.

Raimondo: “We do need to secure that border,” he said, “America is not ready to talk about any type of requirements of change until we secure our borders.” Raimondo concluded that it is important for the United States to enforce laws on the books and gain control of the illegal immigrant situation before substantial change can occur.

2. If you were a Democratic Super Delegate, who would you vote for?

Kleeb: Having worked with both candidates, he considers each to be remarkable for different reasons and, “that the one strength they both have is that they are not (President) Bush.”

Marvin: “I’m a John Edwards man,” Marvin said, adding that he will support Hillary Clinton.

Raimondo: Leaning toward Barack Obama. Raimondo believes he is best suited to reach across the aisle for compromise.

3. What is the solution to our energy needs? Is it ethanol?

Kleeb: Believes in developing an energy strategy that can encompass a variety of different “alternative” fuels to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Raimondo: Believes that we will soon be headed beyond ethanol toward other local alternatives such as switchgrass, and that they will be new alternatives further down the line.

4. What do you think about congressional earmarks?

Kleeb: Believes the budget system is broken. Kleeb also makes the distinction between the Democratic moniker “Tax and Spend,” and refers to current Republican administration as “Borrow and Spend.”

Marvin: Considers earmarks not dissimilar to corporate kick-backs.

Raimondo: Believes progress is being made on earmarks, particularly when the priority process begins with local officials.

I just have one statement.....I feel very very sorry for the people who had the (nightmare) duty of cleaning the Scribner Club....after all the B.S.
that was thrown around at this event!!
When these Democrats support partial birth abortions, not notifying parents of minor in out-of-state abortions, oppose the Patriot Act, support government/national health care, suporting giving health insurance to illegal immigrants, want income distribution, supportive of gay/lesbians issues, wouldn't blink a eye to increase taxes on all Americans, and would support pulling out American troups in Iraq immediately...which means Iran would take over control of Iraq....and terrorists would gain TOTALLY control the entire Middle East and their oil
reserves!! Good bye USA....we would instantly become a "second rate" country! I saw Kleeb's wife on FOX NEWS
a few nights ago....and if that didn't scare me...nothing will!! She seemed continurally irritated when the other panel members on FOX did not agree with her...that tells me a lot of Kleeb's agenda!!

here is what ritchard register had to say about democracy. I thought he was running for a non partisan seat??

ritch regitar quote below;

“We are the Democratic party. We are not going to tell you how to live your family values. We are going to live family values. We are not going to teach you how to hate. We are going to teach you how to cooperate.”

funny stuff from a democrat that believes it is ok to terminte pregnancies, not enforce the death penalty and whatever else the democrat party tells him.

I agree with Richard Register. The Republicans have to go. You sir are my choice for the best Democrat running for this office. Not sure who you are running against but you are a good liberal Democrat.
RE Joe Sokolovsky

Joe you are clueless. the Democratic party is what we need. yes we believe in free choice for women. We believe "ALL PEOPLE" regardless of nationality or legal status deserve legal representation. We believe the death penalty is in humane and getting rid of it will save money. And yes we believe Richaed Register is the person that can lead us. So Joe, go find some other george bush cause.

I was at this event and some of these quotes are somewhat butchered. As for some of the responses. The only time abortion was brought up was by Mr. Marvin saying he was against. I do not know what some of you right wingers imagine but when Democrats gather, we do not sit around and say how much we want people to have abortions, I also don't think Gays and Lesbians were even mentioned. I'm not saying we do not have views on these things counter to the far right, what I am saying is that the far right while they seem to be obsessed with those two issues, it is far from our main focuse. We mostly focused on the economy, environment and the war, in that order at this dinner. Richard is a long time leader of the local democratic party, I have known him a long time. He does not just follow whatever the party tells him to think and he is not radical by any means. You guys need to calm down. The anti abortion candidate we had there, Mr Marvin was probably the most outspoken of anyone there. And even thought most of the party is pro choice, no one had a problem with him stating his zero tolerance for abortion. I'm really tired of Democrats being demonized by Republicans. You people are NO more moral than Democrats, maybe we see some issues differently but I think many Democrats think your stance on war for the most part is as questionable as you blieve our stance on abortion is. Get off the superiority kick. We have different views. Live with it. We also allow people in our party to have varying ideas. They don't have to be a cookie cutter candidate.

Hi Clueless...I know very well what the
Democrats stand for...and apparently, so do the voters...that is why the 'clueless' Democrats will NOT win one seat in Nebraska in the coming elections! So....clueless....stop feeling sorry for yourself, and have the 'courage' to put your name on what you put under comments...or are you liberal Democrats hiding in the closet?

Joseph, I for one am not using a nick name because I don't have ``courage''. Sometimes I feel that personalities get to be too much of the point. What I say should not be looked at differently if you know my identity. I have written letters with my name and decided to do it this way not because I was afraid but because I don't think it matters what my name is or any other specifics about me. I am an American and I have certain viewpoints. My view points are just as valid as yours. Liberals are good patriotic American in general just as probably conservatives are. We may not agree with you but you have a right to your view, you may not agree with me but I also have a right to my view. Because I do not agree with you does not mean I am a coward, it does not mean I am immoral, it means I have a different view and we are allowed that in this country.

You are the epitome of the Republicans and exactly why we need to vote Democratic. I will be voting for Register and everyone else who is a Democrat. The Democrat party stands up for everyone and their rights, unlike the Republicans. There are not many who wish for 4 more years of Republican policy; our country is in too much a mess already.

I don't put my names on postings as their are several people in the area with my name, and that only starts trouble for everyone. Unless you have an unusual name, such as yours, it should not be done. In fact, the OWH used to post comments & you weren't allowed to post your real name for that very reason.

Also, you might be surprised at how many Democrats show up to vote this year. Don't count your chickens until they hatch. Everyone has had it with the failed policies of the Republicans - yes, even in Nebraska.

The Democratic Party is full of individual thinkers. Not everyone feels the same way on all issues. Face it! The Democratic Party is the best representative of the people of our country. The Republicans have been running our country for too long and Nebraska for MUCH too long....it's time for a change. The Democrats have been told that there's no chance of getting elected in NE for many years, but that's about to change. You just never know who's a Democrat around here since most are not very public about it....but I think that you'll see it in the election results! We've got some FANTASTIC candidates to go vote for in November!

Sounds like Joe is a little upset there won't be a republican in the oval office in 9 months.

May 2, 2008 2:16 PM
Joe is right. Nebraska should just declare itself as a "Republican ONLY" state and require the rest of us to move out.
That way this state's politicians can live in denial of; "toe taps" in restrooms; soliciting sex from pages; running record national deficits; and decaring war based upon lies. . .
They can proudly defend their position of promoting conception of babies into bad situations, then wanting to execute them after they commit a violent crime.
The "Joe Sok" Republicans deserve each other and the rest of us should let them win by locating to another state. I know I'm looking, and I'll take my somewhat rare credentials with me.

Great candidates for the Dems. Could not agree more w/ statement by Kleeb: GOP = borrow and spend. What a joke this admin. has been on "responsible spending". Johanns = change? He couldn't BE more status quo.

Republicans on this board have this incredible hypocrisy where they *believe* that gov. should be small, yet insist on legislating morality? Not possible. A true blue GOPer believes in small gov., not starting regional wars, and staying out of your bedroom. I haven't seen one around in a long time. Let me know if you have.

May 2, 2008 3:37 PM
Richard Register for legislature is a joke. He supports abortion for innocent babies but is against the death penalty for muderers! I know he's a criminal defense lawyer, but he is on the wrong side of the issues compared to most Nebraskans!

Yes, Democrats are independent thinkers. Republicans believe and spout off everything they hear on Fox News; they are unable to think for themselves. They believe that it a right winger says it on Fox News, then it must be correct. If you're watching Fox News, wake up!

Are you kidding me? Register believes in the rights of women. Evidently, you'd like to go back to the days before women were given the right to vote. Personally, I don't care to go back to the dark ages. Good point, Caesar----Republicans can't have it both ways - they want small government, but believe in controlling women's bodies and morality. Just doesn't make sense. The Republicans aren't fooling anyone anymore. I see a great change for Nebraska at election time!

this is the first I heard about this guy running for legislature. What district is he running in? I want to know so I can tell people not to vote for him. I am PRO life. I belong to right for life. I am a Dem and am ashamed of him and many others for their views. I know I should chage parties but my parents were proud dems that were pro life.

It worked.....I knew if I shot down some of the local Democrats....they'd jump out of the bushes like they were on fire!! Now....I hope the voters can see why they should vote a straight Republican ticket come election day!
I find it very-very funny that you Democratic bobbleheads are doing exactly what they are accusing me of doing....and because they are going to lose at the polls they are releasing their frustration on me....you don't have to read what I write....but, I do not plan on giving up my right of speech or whatever....if you Democrats weren't so insecure...oh, well....isn't life a joy and fun?

I loose, please help me with the logic?

republicans and democrats are the same, the difference if i understand your statement correctly is one group kills the child prior to birth and the other group waits till a crime is committed and then kills the same person?

It is a wonderful system that allows wars of words between parties, and branches of government in their quest for power. Keeping government and politicians fighting amongst themselves allows normal people to live normal lives.

Joseph P. Sokolovsky's views are exactly why I switched from the Republican to the Democratic party. And, by the way, Richard Register lives in the third ward - he's not living out in cookie-cutter Day Acres land. Thank goodness we have a clear thinking Democrat running.

Does anyone besides me get sick and tired of hearing nothing but blah blah blah about abortion from a lot of right wingers? Most of the people I know who are pro choice, myself included, are not sitting around touting how we want babies to be aborted, but a lot of the right wingers are against birth control as well. That's a tad crazy. We are just not living in Walt Disney World believing that there are never situations so bad that a pregnancy may need to be ended. It's a serious decision and not one to be taken lightly either direction. I've known Richard for years and he doesn't go around pushing abortion, the environment is the subject he talks about most. I would like to know how they can be so smug about their pro life stance while supporting war which kills children outside the womb.
