We as a city, we as a community, need to take action to eliminate the large number of illegal immigrants that continue to amass in Fremont.
To understand just how big a problem this is, one only needs to open his eyes and ears, to read the newspaper. Statistics show that with these illegals comes increased costs for all of us taxpaying, legal residents. Increased costs for education, for lunch programs, welfare, food stamps, utility subsidies, housing subsidies, health care, police protection, just to name a few.
Through these increased costs and increased taxes, we the taxpaying citizens are supporting these illegals. This is not something that we should be forced to do, especially given the state of our economy. Unfortunately, the federal government has been pretty inept in dealing with the illegals. The state, through Gov. Heineman, tried to do something but was blocked by the actions or inactions of eight state senators.
However, I am not aware of anything that would prohibit us as a city from enacting ordinances to deal with these illegals. City ordinances could be enacted that would make it a violation for businesses to hire illegals, for anyone to rent to an illegal, for anyone to sell a car to an illegal, for anyone to sell a house to an illegal, for any organization to allow the use of or membership in their facility by an illegal, basically to do any kind of business with an illegal. An ordinance could also be enacted that would make it a violation for a business to allow an illegal to send money via money orders, cashier’s checks or other means. It would also be a violation for an illegal to drive in the city.
Once these ordinances are enacted, vigilance would have to be used to enforce them with harsh penalties being imposed on those who violate them.
It is unfortunate that a few businesses in this city have put their own greed ahead of what is morally and legally right, ahead of what is good for this community and the citizens of Fremont by stooping to hiring illegals. But, sadly, they have. Maybe ordinances like the ones I have suggested would negate the damage being done to the city of Fremont by the actions of these so-called good, corporate citizens.
