Marvin Carlson

Marvin W. Carlson, 81, of rural Overton died Friday, May 9, 2008, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

He was born Oct. 8, 1926, on the family farm north of Bertrand in Phelps County, the second of three sons born to Carl William and Jennie (Nordenstam) Carlson. He was baptized and confirmed at Adullam Lutheran Church. He received his primary education from Ash Grove School in Phelps County and then graduated from Bertrand High School with the class of 1944. Following his education, Marvin was inducted into the United States Army, serving his country during World War II, stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge on Jan. 7, 1947.

Following his service to his country, Marvin returned home to the family farming operation and fed cattle with his brothers: Alton and Doyle.

He married Elsie Marie Sienknecht on June 14, 1966, and the couple was blessed with four children: Kirk, Kathy, Peg and Jeff. Marvin’s passion was his work, feeding cattle and working the land until his passing.

Marvin was a lifetime member of Adullam Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and held various offices throughout the years. Marvin was a past member of the Overton School Board, Bertrand Co-op Board, Phelps County Planning Commission, Overton Rural Fire Board, and also sang in the 1733 Barbershop Chorus for 30 years.

Marvin leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Elsie; four children, Kirk Carlson (and wife, Kim) of Ralston, Kathy Griess (and husband, Jim) of Fremont, Peg Moeller (and husband, Sid) of Hooper and Jeff Carlson (and wife, Bertina) of Overton; nine grandchildren, Micheal, Brian, Shawn and Joseph Carlson, Robb and Brett Moeller and Alexandra, Ashley and Dalton Carlson; four great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alton Carlson (and wife, Florence) and Doyle Carlson.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Adullam Lutheran Church, north of Bertrand, with the Rev. Gary Panko officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand with family present from 6-7:30 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in Adullam Cemetery in Phelps County.

A memorial has been established in his memory and will be designated at a later date.
