OMAHA – A pair of Fremont High School sophomores claimed the Class A No. 2 doubles state championship Friday at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
Jessica Spalding and Megan Robertson of the Tigers handed the top-seeded team of Caroline Nelsen and Kara Schuele from Omaha Marian their first loss of the season in the championship.
Spalding and Robertson won the first set 6-3 before falling 6-2 in the second. The Fremont duo rebounded with a 7-5 win in the third and deciding game.
The third-seeded Spalding and Robertson also knocked off the No. 2 seeded team of Ashley Wiedel and Jenna Helleberg of Grand Island in the semifinals.
After winning the opening set 6-0, the Tigers took the second 7-6 on the strength of a 7-1 tiebreaker.
In the No. 1 singles division, Marian freshman Brooke Urzendowski completed a perfect season to help the Crusaders win the team title. Marian finished with 52 points while runner-up Omaha Westside finished with 38.5. Fremont High was seventh with 22.
At No. 2 singles, fifth-seeded Brigette Root of Grand Island defeated third-seeded Alison Slosburg of Omaha Westside 6-2, 6-4 for the championship.
