LINCOLN -- The First State Bank Seniors went 1-4 last weekend in the Peterson tournament.

First State was defeated by Pinnacle Bank (Lincoln Southwest) 7-1, DiGiorgios (Omaha Gross) 7-1 and Kearney 9-1. The Seniors then scored 11 runs in the third inning to defeat Columbus 12-4. Beatrice defeated First State 2-0 in the final game.

“Offensively, we struggled all weekend,” First State coach Tim Champ said. “We were swinging at bad pitches and taking good pitches. Generally when that happens you don’t hit very well. That was our big downfall.

“Defensively, we played OK. On the mound at times we were very good and at times we were bad.”

Justin Beranek and Gates Cook tallied First State’s lone runs in the losses to DiGiorgios and Kearney with solo home runs. Cook went 2-for-3 with five RBIs a home run and a double in the win over Columbus. He also captured the win on the mound by surrendering four runs -- three earned -- on one walk and six strikeouts.
