Crews demolish former Alco building

Chunk by chunk, three John Deere excavators are bringing down the former Alco building on 23rd Street.

Sawyer Construction is demolishing the 30-year-old building for Fremont Area Medical Center.

A medical park will replace the building. The first phase of Fremont Medical Park will be a 14,000-square-foot medical office building.

There is a potential for three additional buildings on the site.

“We thought it would be better for the future to build a campus versus one locked building,” FAMC chief executive officer Patrick Booth said in June. “We wanted to build an office building that was just a medical facility. It’s less expensive and we’re adding to the value of the property.”

The cost to develop the medical campus is estimated at $2 million to

$3 million, which includes the demolition costs.

Construction could begin in August and could take up to eight months.

the money wasted so far on this project, due to the ignorance of the powers that be from famc, should be paid back by these powers that be. thers no excuse for wasting around 2 million dollars then just starting over basically. tells me that the hospital isnt run very well and makes me wonder if being a patient there is dangerous.

To fremonter, it isn't 2 million already. It will take that to complete the project, which includes the demolition.

I, as a long time Fremonter, actually think that this is a much better and cost efficient plan not to mention how great Highway 30 is beginning to look from a visitors and local perspective.

We have a fantastic medical facility, fantastic medical professionals and have you seen that much needed Imaging Center? Wow. I can't wait to see what they do with the old Alco property! All this and with NO TAX PAYERS MONEY!

We are blessed. Keep up the good work "powers that be".

To Fremonter: In a previous article they mentioned that the work that was already done to the building was required whether it was being torn down or remodeled. It was not wasted money. The article also mentioned that they are saving 1 million by tearing down and building a campus of buildings. They will build what they need to now and will have the ability and area to build more when they are needed.

Seems to me this hospital has a lot of extra money to throw around. If they have so much it means they are charging too much.If they really want to make a diffrence maybe they could make health care more affordable for everybody.

The hospital is owwned by the County and is "NON PROFIT". Kind of neat how they can waste money. Sure a different picture than companies trying to stay open and make a profit.
Thank you taxpayers and insurance companies for your windfalls and continued support. You make hte waste continue.

I can't stop asking questions, sorry!! Editor please provide the answers in stories once in a while.

Is the tribune correct about the building project begining in August? If that is true, this was decided months ago, going through the various levels of local government not to mention designers who would in theory take months to develop building plans.

I am not sure the idea of the hospital "selling" parcels of ground is good for long range hospital developments, unless of course, preparations are being made for the County to sell the facility to Alegent.

Would the money from the sale go directly to the County Budget? Maybe a portion of the profit should go to the county to better equip law enforcement, especially if the planning long range is not any kind of priority with this new administrator. Equity and investment are a thing of the past in this new economy, large deficit financing is the new "rage"; better unload anything that would give the impression of having "equity" or "forward thinking".

To Fremonter and other naysayers: Get over it.. People who are "powers that be" know what they are doing and you don't. FAMC is constantly improving their campus and has hired some of the best surgeons around. This is not wasting money. If you knew how many low income people were treated for FREE last year, you'd be amazed. Last time I checked, you all don't work for free.

To all of you that for some crazy reason think that this isn't money well spent, go away. The next time that one of you gets sick, has a heart attack, stroke or is involved in a serious car accident and the paramedics say that they are taking you to FAMC, tell them thanks but no thanks. Apparentley you would much rather drive 30+ minutes to another hospital. FAMC is spending this money to make this hospital even better than it already is. I'm in the medical field and have done work with hospitals all over the Midwest and I can assure you that FAMC is one of the finest hospitals around. By expanding and improving FAMC, residents can get treated right here in Fremont, instead of forcing us to spend money at another hospital in another city. FAMC may be nonprofit but in the end, it's still a business. The number one rule in the business world is that in order to make money, you have to spend money. If excess money begins to accumulate, the key business practice is to expand business in order to bring in more business and that is exactley what FAMC is doing. Congrats, FAMC, you are doing a wonderful and very impressive thing for the city of Fremont, it's just a little unfortunate that only a few of us can how great this is.

to all who think the powers that be are doing such a great job and also who think that famc is such a great hospital, i have to tell you that i as well as my wife and other people i have talked to think just the oposite. the ER service really stinks. some, NOW I SAID SOME AND NOT ALL FOR YOU IDIOTS WHO LIKE TO TWIST THINGS THAT THEY READ, nurses leave a lot to be disired in there expierence as well as attitude. some say all the additions to the hospital are not done using tax dollars? believe me you will pay dearly for using that hospital. as some have said the cost that the hospital is charging is totally outragious. all hospitals charge ridiculous prices but fremont hospital is one of the worst. whoever ran the hospital in its beginning apparently had their heads in there butts when it was built because the hospital cannot add floors due to the type of foundation put in. really efficient huh? the business office needs to hire people with much better attitudes. some of those people have their noses so far in the air.

Fremonter-- I couldn't agree with you more. I have been a patient at FAMC a number of times, as have many other memebers of my family, and I can tell you that the quailty of care leaves a lot to be desired. You can spend millions of dollars adding on, redecorating, getting new up-to-date equiptment, but it is the customer service they really need to work on. Leaving used needles in rooms, not washing hands or wearing gloves, unanswered call lights, poor attitudes, long waits and just plain not carring about the patient all are issues I have dealt with. You hear all the time "it is so busy" or "we are short staffed". Spend some of this extra money on improving the service and reputation of the hospital where it really matters. You can win all the awards from those who do not use the services and experience the lack of customer service and care, but it is the people who use the facilities you need to listen too.

I can give you a more recent example- My daughter had to go in early in the morning for a lab. We arrived on time, there was nobody at the desk. We rang the bell and waited for over 20 minutes for someone to help us. We then had the procedure and had to wait to see if there was any reaction, durring this time there was no one available if anything had happened, and I hate to think if something had, we had already waited 20 minutes the first time after ringing the bell for help. Would anyone have answered if we really needed help?

To Fremonter and LSB, like I said before, you're not required to go to FAMC. You are more than welcome to use some of the other fine hospitals in the Fremont/Omaha/Lincoln area. If I had as many complaints about any other business or establishment as you have about FAMC, I would simply choose not to go. If you don't like some of the things that your tax dollars are going towards, there are alot of things that you can do about it, i.e. write your senator, go to town meetings, meet with the mayor or simply move away.
