As the Fourth of July nears, Max Yashirin is thinking a lot about the country’s forefathers -- and he’s been asking what they would think about the current state of America.

“What would they say about the Patriot Act and the sad state of our civil liberties?” asked Yashirin, the Democratic candidate for the 1st District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. “What would they think about our country holding people for an indefinite period of time without due process? - What would they say about an illegal war of aggression on a country that didn’t attack us?

“I think they would say, ’America, we need a change and we need it now.”

Yashirin addressed delegates at the Nebraska Democratic Party state convention Saturday. He faces incumbent Republican Jeff Fortenberry in November’s general election.

Yashirin, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq, said he is disappointed with “politics as usual.”

“I was disappointed at Washington’s politics as usual,” he said. “Washington has not delivered on its promises.”

Yashirin asked for help in his bid for the House. He called on members of his party to work on the grass-roots level to build support..

The state convention continues through Sunday.

Mr. Yasharin,
I think that our forefathers, when asked about holding people for an indefinite length of time without due process, would say, "They're not citizens. Why are you giving them the rights of the Constitution? That's not what we meant to have happen. The Constitution was meant to limit the actions of the government."

When asked about a war of aggression, I think they would say, "That's why we gave absolute control of the military to the President. As commander-in-chief it's his job and he is accountible to the people. We never intended Congress to second guess his military actions but that's why we gave Congress the power to declare war."

But Mr. Yasharin is right about one thing. It is politics as usual and Washington hasn't delivered on its promises. That's why you should vote the Democrats out of office as they have worked hard to weaken this country, raise the price of oil, and perpetuate the global warming myth.

Mr. Buffington, I would like to see some news reporting of the phase II report that was released on June 5th that clearly shows how the current administration exaggerated and lied to the American public about the events that let to this war. It is a very interesting report and has surprisingly gotten very little news coverage locally and nationally. I would really like to see the responses by the republicans who so vehemently stick up for this presidents who will surely go down in history as the worst president in the history of the USA.
