They were supposed to be there to watch 500 rubber ducks travel down the Elkhorn River, but Tyler Larson and Jacob Smith didn’t seem to care.

Both boys splashed around in the water at the river’s edge in Scribner on Sunday as everyone waited for the first ducks to cross the line in the second annual Duck Race.

Five hundreds ducks were dropped into the Elkhorn one mile upstream of Scribner’s Riverfront Park.

“Duck patrol” members Deb and Butch Wegner and Kevin and Shelly Schulenberg worked to keep the flock moving down the river. They had to free several rubber ducks that got caught up in tree limbs.

Back in Riverfront Park, Mike Bruce was manning a grill, cooking hot dogs for spectators. Root beer floats, lemonade and family activities also were available.

Proceeds from the Duck Race will go to purchase playground equipment at the Scribner-Snyder Sports Complex.

Cash prizes were awarded for the first three ducks that crossed the finish line. Doris Wobken’s duck was first; Den and Laura Moxness’ duck was second; and Mary Ann Svec’s duck was third.
