'I vote no'

By Don Bowen/Fremont Tribune
Wednesday, Jul 30, 2008 - 10:43:50 am CDT

With three words late Tuesday night, Fremont Mayor “Skip” Edwards cast a vote to kill a proposed ordinance targeting illegal immigrants.

“I vote no,” Edwards said as the crowd that endured the

four hour, 30 minute meeting erupted in cheers.

It was the last turn on the road to a decision about the ordinance that would have prohibited harboring, renting to and hiring illegal immigrants.

More than 1,000 people packed Fremont High School’s McPherson Auditorium to hear 3 1/2 hours of testimony for and against the proposed ordinance from Fremont residents and residents of other communities, including some from Iowa and one man from Hastings. Only about half remained by the end of the testimony.

Tuesday night’s meeting was to be the second reading of the proposed ordinance, but by a 7-1 vote, council members suspended the rules, putting the matter to a vote of the council.

With a 4-4 vote among council members, Edwards cast a rare vote, defeating the proposed ordinance.

Council members Charlie Janssen, Mary Marsh, Scott Schaller and Bob Warner voter to approved the ordinance; John Anderson, Gary Bolton, Scott Getzschman and Jon Gilry voted against it.

Edwards read from a prepared statement before casting the vote.

“Control of illegal immigration is a federal issue,” Edwards said. “I’m bound by the law, too. All of us want something done to correct the situation. We can help best by pressuring the U.S. government to take action.”

“This has weighed very heavy on me,” Edwards said before reading his prepared statement. “I’ve done a lot of research. Everyone -- including myself -- is against illegals. That’s not the issue.”

The issue, he explained, was a proposed ordinance that would defy the Nebraska Attorney General, a pair of additional attorneys with which city staff have consulted and the federal government. Such an ordinance would draw the city into “very expensive” legal battles that the city can’t afford on an already tight budget.

More than 70 people spoke during the public comment segment of the meeting, split nearly in half among those in favor of the proposed ordinance and those opposed to it.

Feeding off of a pair of residents’ comments to end the debate Tuesday night, Getzschman asked City Attorney Dean Skokan if the council could vote to suspend the rules without city staff recommendation and without it being announced ahead of time.

Skokan said it would take a three-fourths vote of the council present -- or a super majority of six votes. The lone descending vote to suspend the rules came from Warner, who started pushing for the proposed ordinance back in mid spring.

Bolton, who gave a second to Getzschman’s motion to suspend the rules, said this has not been a simple issue.

“I heard things on both sides that I agreed with tonight,” Bolton said. “I heard things on both sides that I knew were false and did not agree with. What you are asking us to do is pass something that is illegal and unconstitutional.

“I am very frustrated about our national problem of illegal immigration. The federal government passes laws that they fail to enforce.”

At the same time, local law enforcement agencies are not allowed to enforce federal immigration laws, Bolton continued. That combination adds to the frustrations.

Anderson said the proposed ordinance seemed more clear to him.

“This proposed ordinance is a criminal law,” said Anderson, a former officer with the Fremont Police Department. “The chief law enforcement officer in the state of Nebraska is the attorney general. He’s already given us his opinion that he is against this.”

Attorney General Jon Bruning supports a 1997 opinion from then-Attorney General Don Stenberg which states federal law preempts any state or local law that would impose civil or criminal sanctions on anyone who employs an illegal immigrant.

Security was heavy for the meeting, which was moved to the high school’s auditorium because of the anticipated crowds. More than 35 law enforcement were on hand for the meeting.

Those entering the building had to walk through portable metal detectors.

One member of the audience was escorted out of the building for not following the rules of conduct that had been set for the meeting.

You all thought racism was bad before just wait, it's going to get a whole lot uglier before it gets any better. Photos of one race of people cheering and behaving as if they just won the lottery! Oh wait, guess they did.

Ok, I realize that this is not a dead issue. But let's try to heal up the wounds and move forward.

"The Hazleton City Council approved an ordinance designed to make the city, in northeastern Pennsylvania, among the most hostile places in the country for illegal immigrants. The ordinance, passed 4 to 1, will deny licenses to businesses that employ illegal immigrants, fine landlords $1,000 for each illegal immigrant discovered renting their properties and require city documents to be in English only."

Well at least someone's city council is getting it right. Guess I'll just pack up and move to where my rights as a citizen are protected by laws at least attempting to be enforced. That should make those so concerned about lawbreakers not having anywhere to go very happy since it'll open up one more property to an illegal immigrant.

I think everyone really needs to ask themselves...what is this really about??? Everything I read on these comments pages over the last couple of weeks just shows that the majority of people are just plain racists. The illegal immigrants, latinos for the most part, have families...they have daughters and sons and mothers and even fathers...which is more than I can say for some particular races. They are just trying to survive. The unemployment rate in Nebraska is incredibly low...as is the rest of the country. What are you going to do Fremont when you kick out Mexicans...and other Latinos from your city??? How are you going to support those industries that need manpower??? I think there is a clear need for immigration reform...but this is clearly....clearly not the answer. And for all of you god fearing people...whatever happened to the bible and what it preaches...like..oh I don't know...embracing and loving thy neighbors...who knows...you may even make a new friend or two.

how do we expect to have diversity in our town if we don't have immigrants? when i first moved here 11 yrs ago i saw only white people. now i see black white and brown. instead of turning them away can't we try to turn them in thr right direction and show them how we do it here in nebraska legally..

Move to Hazzleton-I agree with Jeff. Scoop maybe you need to move to Canada and try their social reform programs.
Good thing mayor skip voted with his intelligence and not his heart. He just saved the taxpayers several thousands of dollars in court costs and battles. Councilman Warner how about some legislation dealing with land for another baseball field- for the youth in the city- white-hispanic and otherwise who are positively promoting Fremont with their play and behavior.
Did I hear
Jul 30, 2008 2:16 PM
I ran into a lot of people this morning that a very unhappy about what happened at last night's Fremont City Council meeting....and 'no' they are not racists
as everyone supported ordinance is being called. They are just plain honest and hard working people that do not like our city evaded by a bunch of illegal immigrants.

I heard on several occassions that lots of people would like Scott Schaller to start in write in campaign for the Mayor's seat in the November election.

Also, I received emails from several people in Omaha, Lincoln and a couple of other cities....that a very proud of Fremont for at attempting to take a stand on the illegal immigrant situation.

Finally, lots of people in Fremont are both confused and so upset that they almost sputter when they talk.....and
this is involving the situation where a older gentlemen in his VFW hat when ejected from the meeting for ONE comments....where as all of the Hispanics in their white clothes and grouped in the fronts seats......on several occassions clapped or groaned...
and guess what...none were ejected!!

Ejecting a veteran who saved our butts during war time so that we might live the "good life,' yet no disciple of Hispanics...somehow doesn't seem like
it is fair nor the American thing to do.

On the other hand, MANY people are extremely proud of Charlie Janssen, Scott Schaller, Bob Warner and Mary Marsh for taking a stand, and doing what was RIGHT!

God bless America!!

as much as i cant stand ole skippy, i have to say congrats on his vote. but then again is skippy hiding something concerning illegals? the council knew it was a federal issue, but still took it this far. what a bunch of morons. hopefully we wont be hearing anymore about this issue. i have to say the ones who voted against it have something to hide or are protecting someone who has. just another case of baloney. the city council has, again, done nothing but waste time and money. i cant wait to see whats next on their agenda. if you look up "fremont city council" in the dictionary, it says see idiots and or morons.

And to "It's going to get worse"...what a sinister view that is. What would your "white family" do if they just found out that they don't have to try and move to another city and still try to keep their kids fed and going to school to get an education you apparently are lacking. Thanks to Jim and Sandy for having supporting opinions that are well thought out. The sooner people realize that diversity is a great aspect of a city...the better and know that it won't infringe on your values even though...if you just opened your eyes...you would realize that your neighbor probably has the same exact values as you!!!
Bad choice
Jul 30, 2008 3:39 PM
I guess there were only 4 people on the city council worth their wages. And it isn't the no votes! Obviously all you do-gooders don't work were you can see all the freebies the illegals get. Free medical care, free medicine including Tylenol and Motrin, food stamps, etc.
There would be no economic disaster, they send their money home anyway. I wouldn't mind, but they are(illegals) getting benefits that American Citizens are denied because they make just alittle too much money.
Sure, I would have loved to be able to stay home with my kids when they were little, but I had to work to make ends meet. I'd love to have someone else pay for my medical bills/insurance/medicine/food etc. I could drive a newer car than people who work. It wouldn't be such an issue if they paid taxes, insurance, medications, food like the rest of us do. They don't because they are ILLEGAL.

Perhaps we should call another forum so that all of we legal citizens can sit down with the illegals and have them explain how we all could get on Medicaid, I would really like to know! I'm kind of tired of working. I'd like to kick back on someone elses Social Security.

I know 5 people who won't get my vote next time it rolls around.

Jul 30, 2008 4:02 PM
Jeff- Know your facts before you spout off. I'm not a "white family". Personally I have been called a race traitor and told that not only will I be raped and killed, but so will my daughter, simply because of her race.

When we go out together we see the glares and the smirks. Don't talk to me about racism. My view might not be all sunshine and butterflies but it's realistic. I know, because I've experienced it.

Hey, Jeff did you know also, according to the Bible that we should not break the law? When you enter this country ILLEGALLY you are breaking the law. Something needs to be done about this and I am really disappointed that this did not pass. I hope, somehow, to see this issue on the ballot in November. How about we let the people of Fremont who are registered voters decide! I'm also regretting voting for Skip. I will be doing a write in with Scott's name! Kudos to Charlie, Mary, Scott and especially Bob for your votes and for getting the ball rolling!
To those who supported this ordinance
Jul 30, 2008 4:03 PM
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO SUPPORTED THIS ORDINANCE THERE IS STILL SOMETHING YOU CAN DO:

This ordinance would have allowed the city to report what they believed to be illegal immigrants based on the information that the individual would have had given them. Since that option has now been taken away it is up to the community to do the reporting.

Please visit the INS website. Since we are not allowed to post links I cannot post it here for you. Simply go to your favorite search engine and type in “Immigration and Customs” that should be enough for you to find the link on your own. Towards the bottom on the right hand side you will find a toll free number for reporting suspicious activity. This is anonymous so you do not have to fear losing your job if it’s the unwritten, unofficial, rule of your company to not report those they know are illegal.

In addition, if you click on the tab at the top that says “About Us” and then click on the link for Office of Detention and Removal Operations Offices you can scroll down until almost all the way to the bottom. Listed there you will find the name of our Field Office Director and his address and phone number. Use it. If all those who supported this ordinance were to write and/or call him weekly I’m sure at some point he’ll get the message and maybe, just maybe, something will at least be investigated to see if there is a problem, and take care of one if there is.

In closing I would like to add that I DO NOT condone the use of anonymous reporting lines for the purpose of “getting back” at someone or promoting a racist agenda. Please, if you’re going to call the toll free number, make sure that you have at least the minimum amount of reliable, intelligent, and honest information concerning someone you believe to be an illegal. In addition, let’s remember that not all illegal immigrants are one race and just because someone can’t speak English does also not mean they are an illegal immigrant. If you cannot provide that minimum, and instead just want to bring up the issue of illegal immigration in general, than use the direct call line of our field director or write him.

The council took this out of the hands of those in authority who could have handled this based on information provided by the possible illegal immigrant themselves. Since they have chosen to do this, it is now up to us who supported it, to take manners into our own hands, not through violence, but THE LEGAL WAY.

I wish they would have only allowed people of voting age to get in to the meeting. There were kids there way too young to know what this is all about taking up seats. Because parents wanted to drag there kids in wearing shirts like "no human is illegal", I could not get in.
Well, if I would have waited outside until they finally filled the upper seats, then maybe I would have got in.
I wonder how many of these people who oppose the ordinance actually deal with those who are coming here illegally. I deal with them, so I know exactly what they are like. The illegals coming here only benefit businesses. They don't benifit the drug problem, crime problem, and other problems of the community. They only make it worse.
This is a really sad day for Fremont. People no longer care about preserving the culture of Fremont.
Never in Fremonts history has a house been surrounded by 40 people throwing rocks and cement. Thanks to the meat packing industries bringing them here, situations like that are only the beginning.
I am thankful for Mr. Warner and the other 3 who supported this ordinance.
The bleeding hearts are crying about the cost that this ordinance would bring. What about the cost of illegal immigration? Read the book "In Mortal Danger" and "Whatever it Takes". Then you will see what the price of illegal immigration is. Congratulations to the meat packing plants. You can now go on harboring and hiring illegals, and screwing up America.
Maybe this is what people needed. Hopefully all of this got people fired up and made them start to think about their future in America.

Dear Did I hear: You must walk around Fremont with " Rose colored glasses"! When using Jansen as hoonest and hard working I would suggest you do your homework on this guy. My dad is a Veteran of Korea. Not all Veterans served during time of war. You might want to check the personal backgrounds of some of the council you so admire.
Disgusted
Jul 30, 2008 5:36 PM
I'm disgusted Nebr is too cowardly to act on their own to enforce immigration laws. It is not against any federal laws to pass local ordinances to fight this problem. The fear is being called racist, and it is not a race issue, it is a legal one. Once people get past that, something may finally be done. States who have passed bills and taken matters into their own hands, are Pennsylvania; Arizona; Missouri; Oklahoma to name a few. Upwards of 30 states are considering doing the same. It's too bad the midwest is too backwards and cowardly to do anything.
jeff
Jul 30, 2008 5:58 PM
I don't think this honestly has anything to do with illegal or legal. Whether it be Columbus, Fremont, Schuyler...etc, I think that people are grouping everyone together. Why don't you people just come out and say it...what you really have a problem with...you clearly have the problem with the skin color of these people...period. It is so plain as day...Again..the immigration system is incredibly flawed...I understand that and the way the system is now, illegal immigrants are only forced to take drastic measures to support their families...if given the proper channels for immigrants...there would be no illegal immigration. I seem to think that even with amnesty...everyone would find a way to complain about hispanics...demeaning them over and over!!! And oh...I am white...I am a veteran...educated...etc. It is ignorance...plain and simple. I don't wish to group everyone into this racist view...but there are way too many people in Nebraska that have this negative view in general of Hispanics and Latinos!!! They are not criminals...they are hard working people that only add to society..not take away from it!

I'll see if they'll print this one!!!

Everyone is using the 'racist' card AGAIN. Its not about race, its about ILLEGAL!!

If our City Council can't see that, then I'll be looking forward to the next vote!!! As long as I have one!!!

I don't care where they are from, if they are here illegally, they are breaking the law.

So I guess its ok to decide which laws we want to follow, and which ones we can ignore. Arson, Theft, Assault, Murder. If you can ignore one, I guess you can ignore all.

Laws are just those you want or like, they are for the good of the majority.

Guess we'll have to let the NEXT city council and mayor see that!!

Council Change
Jul 30, 2008 11:44 PM
There will be change on the City Council. In fact all $ of the Yes votes could be gone by January of this year. Bob Warner is retiring from the council and is beinf replaced by Jennifer Bixby who ran unopposed for his seat in the republican primary and will run unopposed in the general election. Scott Schaller ran for Mayor and lost. By doing so he gave up his seat on the Council and Sean Gitt won it in the republican primary. He will also run unopposed in the general election. Mary Marsh is up for re-election as a republican and will face off against democratic challenger Leslie Carter. Charlie Janssen handily won the primary election for State legislature and will face the same opponent in the primary which it Richard Register. If Charlie wins the general election as expected the Mayor will appoint a replacement. I heard Sean Gitt, jennifer Bixby, leslie Carter and Richerd register all OPPOSED this ordinance. So assuming the mayor appoints somebody that shares his views for Charlie we will have a Council that is lockstep with the mayor.
And i do respect the entire council for handling this. i was in favor but still support them for doing what they do. I do wish the tribune would ask the following questions as part of their duty to inform.

1. How would the 2 new Councilors have voted on this heated local issue.

2. How would candidate Leslie carter have voted and why/

3. How would Richard register who is running against Charlie janssen have voted.

4. To mayor Edwards, who would you appoint if (which is very likely) Charlie wins the seat in the State legislature?

all relavant and fair questions. And questions a newspaper should ask so we as voters can be informed.

As I read these letters and news articles and being a Fremont native it is very clear to me that Fremont is very torn up and divided right now. And it is very obvious why this has happened. The very first day these illegals came to Fremont they should have been asked for their legal social security cards and American-as in United States-citizenship papers. If this this is a federal law matter why arent federal marshalls taking care of the illegals? Is the Fremont police department allowed to enforce federal law? Does this mean the Fremont police could not arrest any one wanted for a federal crime? Such as Capital offenses, rape treason, kidnapping? Has the illegal immigrant increased during the past 15 years in Fremont? Have they taken any jobs from legal citizens? Have they abused any form of the welfare system? Have they illegally abused any taxpayer money? It would be safe to say yes to all of these questions. How many illegals have been arrested and been in the court system in Fremont in the last 15 years, and what has it cost the taxpayers? It is clear that all of these troubles boil down to one problem.Illegal immigrants.

I didnt know that the world is full of racism. All you guys ever do is complain about immigrants coming here to take over the US. Well.....guess wat everyone.....all of your ancestors immigranted into the US which means you guys don't have any room to talk. Big deal if they are coming into the US....who cares or is because the low paying opportunities?? This is never going to go away anytime soon so GET OVER IT & quit being all cry babies!! Everyone needs to mind their business. This is a federal thing not a local thing. Besides, if they really wanted to get all illegal immigrants from Fremont immigration needs to be called over to Hormel & Trailer Parks-Regency Two but no they must not be too anxious to get them all gone!!

These are VERY say days for Fremont, Nebraska and it breaks my heart.

Please, allow me to give a little bit of my parents life history (bare with me). My dad graduated from Westside in Omaha and my mother graduated from here in Fremont.

They met and moved out to California in 1977. Not because they wanted too, but the climate was better suited for my grandpa who had multiple sclerosis.

It allowed him to live his life to the fullest and luckily long enough for me to enjoy the last four years of his life.

While, in California the illegal situation turned sour and it should have been stopped then, but it didn't.....

My parents moved back to Nebraska for two main reasons. Top priority was because of the illegal influxation into California and the additional violence that came with it.

I myself have lived here for past 23 years of my life in Fremont (now 27). As a legalLY born citizen with a long family tree dating way back when. (Norwegian/Swedish heritage). I attended school here in Fremont (elementary, middle school, high school and a received a college graduate from UNO). Now, I working in the US legally, pay taxes and zero kids!

It just seems, Tuesday night was a set back for the city of Fremont. Thanks to half its city council; who I certainly won't be voting for again.

However, this is the city I've grown up in and the city I love. The city who had its American flags stolen and its American flags replaced!

Please don't allow this our city's voices to take a back seat to another city/county/state agenda. Please push forward and pass a new ordinence and don't allow 'Skip' Edward's to prepare for an already writen speech like the one he gave on Tuesday night.

PS: My hats off to Bob Warner for bringing this to the city/state/nations attention. Please continue to stick it out on the Fremont city council and don't give in.

Fremont saw it for themselves. Regardless if you are for against the immigration bill, it is obvious that Fremont is in a great need for competent leadership. Fremont needs a mayor who does more than cut ribbons and slaps people on the back. Fremont needs a leader with vision.
Being elderly is a limotation for anyone, but leadership is missing at the top.
Fremont continues it's path to nowhere. A city administrator who marches to a mayor's disorganized drum, no direction, no vision, Fremont has suffered under this regime
They money to throw away on immigration but no money to maintain the city and it's assets?
Go figure.

I would like to challenge our Mayor and the other Council members who voted no to the ordinance to take a walk on the wild side. Since you don't see the illegal's as a threat to our community, have your children, grandchildren or maybe your wives take a walk in the Trailer Court @ 807 South Broad. See how safe you feel. So, what don't you people let them be. I always say if you do the crime you pay within time. Everything a person does GOOD or Bad you pay for it. I don't mean by go to heaven or hell because everything you do in life you pay for it here. Maybe not now and maybe its years down the line. This down is a good town wether they have ilegals or not. It's the people of Fremont who makes Fremont what it is now. Can't you people see what is happening to this town. You because you don't get what you want you bt about it like little babies. Fremont is so full of ignorant people! What makes anybody think that this ordinance would have worked? It probably would have ended up in red tape and in the court system.

If it were to become illegal to hire immigrants, who would take the meat packing and roofing jobs? I know a lot of you would say "I'm too good for that type of work".

Also, I hear a lot of landlords prefer to rent to hispanics because they are cleaner people, unlike a bunch of the white people who live like a bunch of slobs.

I think our economy would go down the drain if they made these issues illegal. The price of food would go through the roof because there wouldn't be people to bring it in from the fields.

Just give these things some thought, maybe it will make it through your thick skull. I doubt it in this town.

To those of you wanting Scott Schaller to be a write-in for the November election; I believe (and someone please correct me if they know for sure) he cannot be on the ballot unless he changes party affiliation or Skip steps down before then. Neither of which I believe will occur.

However, writing in anyone's name on the ballot for any of the positions is just 1 less vote the candidate won't receive and when compared to the overall voting turnout; it will show how the citizens of Fremont really feel.

Did you stop complaining enough to read the very well educated comments of "For those who supported the Ordinance"? This person has the solution..........hello??????? Contact INS.............that's what you're supposed to do, with or without this ordinance anyway!....So, now the City Council decided it was a bad idea to add an extra step to the process.......well...why should they? The step that is needed is already in place. Contact INS. If they don't come the first time, understand that they're probably very busy......and contact them again, and again, and again. (Let me give you those initials again: INS!) Please go back and read that information (about how to contact INS....you pickin' up what I'm saying yet? Because this person already spelled out very simple directions for you ALL about INS). The answer is and has been right in front of EVERYONE all along. (INS) So, the question is.........why haven't you contacted them yet? (INS) Why hasn't anyone contact them yet? (INS) If you have.........then sleep peacefully. Otherwise, please stop with the comments that make you seem uneducated and bitter. This is not a bitter community. You are not bitter people. This is a great community that wants to address a problem. So.........address the problem. Contact INS for pete's sake!

I don't get it. If a rapist or murderer moves in next door and I turn them in, I'm a hero. If an illegal moves in and I turn them in, now I'm a racist? In the words of that famous wicked witch of the west, "Oh, what a world...what a world!"

WRITE IN YOUR VOTE FOR SCOTT SCHALLER AS MAYOR IN THE FALL. If you supported the ordinance, please write in Scott. Skip has let this city down and needs to retire before he does anymore harm to us. BOYCOTT VALENTINOS (IT IS OWNED BY GETZSCHMANN) Many many people I know are boycotting Valentinos as Scott Getzschmann could not support what the majority of Fremonters wanted, we will not support his businesses. WRITE, CALL & EMAIL HAGEL AND FORTENBERRY AND HOLD THEM RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR LACK OF INPUT IN SOLVING THIS PROBLEM. It is time our politician from Nebraska step up and lead the way to solving the immigration crisis. If money is an issue in this why not use the money for the war in Iraq for the war against illegal immigration? WRITE,CALL OR EMAIL THE WHITE HOUSE. SHOW OUR BLIND, UNCARING PRESIDENT THAT NEBRASKA NO LONGER WANTS TO BE A SANCTUARY STATE. Even Bush as arrogant as he is has to take notice the thousands and thousands of letters and emails from Nebraska. It is time to take a stand. Boycott employers who use illegal help, boycott businesses who were against the ordinance. There are plenty of good honest businesses and business people to do business with, without using those businesses. Boycott Hormel foods in the grocery store. Do not use their products until they stand up and quit their practice of illegal help. We do have more power than people know or understand. Each and every person does something to help and it escalates. Since our city officials won't we each need to do our own part. Call INS and hold them accountable for allowing illegals to work in this city and even live here. Hold them responsible and accountable until they do the job they were hired for. You can make a difference.

My apologies, I mentioned the wrong website. The website I was speaking to that you could find by putting "Immigration and Customs" into your favorite search engine will actually take you to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement website, not the actual INS website. There on the ICE website you will find the other information I provided in my previous post.

The INS website is more geared towards helping those immigrants who would like to do things legally, where as, ICE is geared towards taking care of enforcement.

Sorry for the mismention, again my apologies.

A Question...
Jul 31, 2008 10:42 AM
Before the meeting I was unsure where I stood. I've read through the posts and I've thought on it more.

Perhaps someone can answer this question to help me wrap up this internal debate:

Why should we do anything other than send illegal immigrants back to their homeland for them to get in line behind others who are doing things the legal way? Why would we reward someone who broke the law by helping them to become legals while they're still here or providing amnesty?

I only ask because everyone is saying that this is a matter of law. Of doing something illegal. I wonder what message that sends to reward someone for breaking the law?

To put it in a somewhat simple (although I know this issue itself is not simple) example: I go to the store. When I get to the car I realize my son has stolen a package of six candybars. As a person in authority, expected to enforce with my children the laws, what do I do? Would I simply say, "I know we're running errands and you probably just stole that because you were hungry, so I'm going to go back in and pay for it for you so you can eat it." Or, in order to make him responsible and realize there are consquences for behavior (good and bad), would I say to him, "Son, what you did is called stealing. It's against the law. It might seem like a small thing to you and you might very well have done it because you're hungry, but it's still wrong. You need to take that back inside, apologize to the owner, and you'll be grounded until you work off the amount of money that it would have cost you to purchase it the way you should have."

Now granted, I know this is a "simple" example, but the message is clear. Persons in authority have a responsibility to enforce laws and to do so in a way that sends the message that you aren't rewarded for negative behavior. It is not being responsible to that person, or others, if we reward someone who breaks the law. They should have a consquence and learn that there are right ways to go about getting what one needs and/or wants.

If we reward someone by allowing them to stay here while we work on making them legal or grant amnesty, what message does that send to all those who wait years to get here the legal way? What message does it send to all those still waiting to get here because they respect our country and want to do things the legal way? It is ok to have compassion but it's not ok to negate that we still have choices and your choices have consquences.

I know this is long, but in closing, if someone can provide for me a reasonable argument why amnesty or helping an illegal to become legal while here, rather than returning them to let in those who are attempting to do it legally and to make them get it in line to do it legally, I will gladly listen with an open mind.

We are not allowed to post telephone numbers because they do not have the time verify those (as for addresses I'm unsure, I didn't see that listed but I'm sure it's safe to assume the same is true).

If you would like to find out information for Chuck Hagel and/or Jeff Fortenberry you can put their names into a search engine and their websites will come up to provide you with all their information.

In addition one can simply put in "US Senators" and "US Representatives" or even "Contacting the President" and all the information anyone would need can be found.

Why is this issue so important to so many of you? Of ALL of the problems we have in our cities, states and county, why THIS issue??? Why does it hit home for so many? Simply put: People are racist. People want to be able identify the cause of all of their problems. They lose a job: it had to be because illegal immigrants stole it and work cheaper. The economy is bad: it is because we have to support the illegals. There is crime in our town: must be the illegals.

BULLCRAP! Hispanics are easy targets for the simple minded and the bigoted.

Many complain that illegal aliens are breaking the law every day that they are here, but they think nothing of breaking the speed limit, littering or taking a pencil from work. What's the worse sin? We live in a country with unlimited freedom, opportunity and wealth. WE, my friends, are the "haves" of the world. Most others are the "have-nots." If you think we've got it so bad here, you are misinformed. We HAVE everything and still feel the need to speed around dangerously in our cars putting others lives in danger. We HAVE everything here yet would rather throw our garbage on the ground for someone else to clean it up, because we really don't respect the greatest country on earth. We HAVE everything here, yet we always want more and will mindlessly take things that aren't ours.

WE, my friends, are the thoughtless, careless, violent, arrogant law breakers. WE who have everything are unappreciative. We want to protect our country from Hispanics, but won't protect it from ourselves. Do we REALLY care about America or just hate other people who look different from us.

I think everyone who stood in line waiting to get into Tuesday's City Council Meeting, waited to speak, and waited to hear the vote results, should be furious to know that our Mayor, Senor Edwards, had a statement already prepared to ready. In my opinion the Mayor and councilmen that voted no on this ordinance have made a serious mistake. The voters are going to remember this issue and how these people voted and its not gone away yet.
The citizens of Fremont have to remember that our elected officials are supposed to represent us in what we want and not make personal judgements on their own. They should ask the people of their wards how they feel and give the people their opinion but when it comes to voting on issues they are to represent us, the citizens of Fremont.
I would guess that with 86% of the people polled that where in favor and supporting the ordinance the councilmen and Mayor that voted no where not in touch with their constituents.

My question to those that voted against the majority of people in Fremont, why didn't you change the ordinance to something that would work instead of just no. You think you were smart enough to read the ordinance and say it was against the law and we would be sued, you surely should have been smart enough to rewrite the ordinance.

I think we have a bunch of overinflated egos on the city council that must be replaced at election time.

don't know if this had been mentioned: but at Tuesdays meeting-- maybe they should of been checking for greencards or any kind of LEGAL VALID CITIZENSHIP papers--- if you couldn't prove you're here legally then you got hauled away to wherever-- maybe back to Mexico-- where you belong!! if we only got a handful rounded up before the word spread-- that's a handful less here! but of course it would of been considered a "sting" and it would of somehow been illegal--- oh wait-- it's OK to do illegal stuff here. but it's OK for the cops to do that to catch guys who "FALSLY" mispressented themselves over the net to meet young girls. I DO NOT condone men doing that and they should be caught and put away- but i'm sure if anybody tried to do that to round up illegals it would be wrong- racist- illegal etc....

I was born and raised in Fremont but now live in Texas.

The problems that Fremont has with ILLEGAL aliens is 1,000 time worse in the state of Texas. My husband and I lived in an area that over a period of 5 years became almost 95% hispanic. When our children went to school they were discriminated against because they were not hispanic. The school was so concerned about teaching these children of ILLEGAL aliens to speak and read English that my children were brushed aside and thus undereducated. My children could already speak English so they were not allowed to attend preschool in that district.

We have since moved to another area and it took them 2 years of hard work to catch up to the other students that were not brushed aside for the children of ILLEGAL aliens.

This is what happens when the schools spend all their money, time and effort on children whose parents don't even bother to learn English. We had other Legal immigrants at this school (from Africa, Haiti, etc.) and all of those parents spoke English quite well. Only the ILLEGAL alien parents were not able to speak and/or understand English.

This is a problem that the Federal Government seems unable or unwilling to address. It is up to the local and city governments to do something about it. I support Fremont 100% for attempting to rectify the situation.

This is NOT a Racial problem, it just happens to be a fact that most of the ILLEGAL aliens in this country are of hispanic origins.

Thank you for allowing me to voice my opinions and experiences.

that's sad that there are kids being brushed aside because they are not mexican! that-- in itself-- is a shame! what is this country coming to? it's apparent we are fighting a battle we will never win. and slowly becoming outnumbered to thte point that we will one day be the minority. i feel sorry for my young kids and what the future holds for them when it comes to this issue. Spanish is being pushed on everyone.. from schools-to the stores to the products we need/use everyday. i have no desire to learn spansih and don't think it should be neccesary to speak it. My kids arent allowed to watch Dora or anything like it. there is absolutely no need for them to speak it! illegals think they need to be here to "better themselves" then learn the language! and i think it's high time we quit catering to them. either A. learn to speak englsih or B. go without. *** Press 1 to continuing hearing this is in English or hang up and learn to speak it!

It angers me that to be against the illegal invasion of our country paints me as a backward thinking, Neanderthal racist. NO, I'm against ILLEGALS. That is NOT racism...that is being a good American. All I want is for someone to stand up, like Bob Warner, and say enough is enough. Unfortunately, 4 of our city council members and our NO mayor, couldn't bring themselves to do that. Too bad!
oh please
Jul 31, 2008 4:11 PM
Folks let's calm down a bit and realize that there are two different issues here.

1. The debate and vote was to be focused specifically on the ordinance that was presented...not a stance on illegal immigration overall. The law as written was not legal itself and the city had no LEGAL authroity to issue it. PERIOD

2. The second issue is the bigger picture of how to address illegal immigration -- that is something still up for debate and somethign that yes, must be dealt with.

But, PLEASE...let's not confuse the two. A vote against this ordinance was the right thing and doesn't say in any way that coming, staying and working in our community when you are here illegally is right or ok.

If legal is legal...then let's work on a legal way to address this...starting with putting significant force on those whose job it is to "fix" this -- our representatives in congress. Have you shared your views with them? Or is it just easier to whine about this poorly crafted law the city has not authority over.

It's time to be a bit more rational -please.

I am pleased with so many thoughtful and constructive remarks on this page. I am glad that so many people feel as I do. I think it is absurd that illegals are allowed to roam free in Fremont. It is a bogus excuse to claim that it is something that should be left to the Federal Government. What's next? Maybe Fremont will decide to let people steal and let the Federal Government handle it all. After all illegal immigration is just as big of a crime as stealing. I feel ashamed to live in a cowardly town with a mayor who is afraid to do what's right. However, I do find comfort in the fact that some people's true colors were able to shine through the other night. I beleive that the mayor and the others against the ordinance lost a great deal of respect and will later see how foolish they were. I simply cannot see how anyone can respect people who will allow our laws to be broken and to let illegals walk all over us. On the other hand, people like Charlie Janssen who made the right choice have earned respect. There once was a time when I was proud to be a Fremonter but not anymore. If city officials are going to just sit around and allow our community to deteriorate, I don't want any part of it. It things keep heading in this direction, I will move to a town with better values and with a mayor who has a backbone.

You need to contact the County Clerk because I don't believe you can vote Scott in as a write in. He ran as a republican in the primary so he would have to change parties before you wrote him in. You can however find someone who did'nt run and have them as a write in, you can also write in a canidate for the council as long as they register before the deadline. Again you would have to contact the county clerk for that date. The question of what it would have cost the city? Not very much, F.A.I.R. an organization for immigration reform offered lawyers and financial aid to Fremont, They are representing Hazelton Pa. and other places, and the ruling for Pa. will be in October. Of course the Council knew this and did'nt feel the need to tell the people of Fremont. I am for reform and I think the city should have passed this. But for different reasons than most, see I am a racist, why because I think that people regardless of color should'nt be extorted from the time they cross the border till they die, I don't believe that they should have to live 3 to 4 familys in a single family home, I don't believe they should have to put their daughters into prostitution to pay some debt. I dont think that 14, 15, and 16 year olds should have to work in a meatpacking plant for 17hrs a day (postville Iowa)You see these things kind of bother me. So I guess I am a racist cause I do hate these actions. If you come here speak to me in English no matter how broken, if I go to your home I will try to speak your language no matter how broken I may sound to you. So I believe this ordinance would have helped bring some attention to the problem and all we accomplished was to sweep it under the rug. And it does'nt seem to bother anyone. A lot of people including myself have not used this word for years its called compromise maybe both sides should try it. And to Jeff my skin color is dark brown, Arabic you know.

It is simply laughable to think that this ordinance as written would have done anything to eliminate illegal immigration and the employment of undocumented workers in our community.

There was not one SHRED of evidence that this would happen. The entire debate seemed to be about legal vs. illegal and how wrong this all is. In fact almost ALL of the debate had nothing to do with the merits of the law -- and that is what the vote was about.

You don't create laws to send messages -- you write and pass resolutions for that purpose. You apply pressure to those with the authoirty do something. You rally supporters and engage in activities that gain attention to you message -- but you don't make new laws.

It is 100% wrong to make laws that are not enforeable, within your authority and especially for the purpose of "sending a message." The folks that votes yes on this all know this.

Those who voted no voted on this law not about immigration. Those who say the coucil members that voted no are "sitting around and letting the community deteriorate" are way off base. That vote said nothing of the sort. I understand you believed that a yes vote was somehow going to fix a problem that no other entity in our country has been able to fix-- but that is not true and blasting these folks with your big comments seems to show you missed the point about this entire debate and process.

There is much that is going on in Fremont to try and make this a better place to live, work, etc. There are groups actively working on bringing employers to town, help build a positive image campaign for the community and at the same time address serious issues facing this town -- and especially facing the LEGAL and WHITE population that make up the far, far majority of citizens (and majority of those in poverty, committing crimes, on drugs, etc.)

Be mad, be frustrated but try and turn that into something productive. The real shame in all of this will be if all this energy turns into all bark and no action. There is plenty that can be done but simply complaining won't do anything.

For the sake of this community, I strongly urge the Fremont Tribune to close comments on this issue. To allow those who were in favor of this ordinance to continue to criticize our councilmen and let their anger and hatred grow and grow is only making things worse and is going to have a lasting negative effect on the community. Just today we had relation visit us from Okla. They said when the laws were passed there, illegals moved out in droves. Where? To other states who take a more lienent approach. As uninformed as most people are concerning the cost of legal action; your checkbook, as well as mine, and EVERY other LEGAL AMERICAN TAXPAYING CITIZEN (black, brown, yellow, green, blue, and yes, white) is already in the hands of the liberal left loons who advocate illegal immigrants in our country.

Should you, or anyone else that is as uninformed be interested, there is a very enlightening report by the Heritage Foundation on the cost of illegal immigrants to the American Taxpayer.
“quote” A new study by the Heritage Foundation's Robert Rector found a household headed by an individual without a high school education, including about two-thirds of illegal aliens, costs U.S. taxpayers more than $32,000 in federal, state and local benefits. That same family contributes an average of $9,000 a year in taxes, resulting in a net tax burden of $22,449 each year.
Over the course of the household's lifetime that tax burden translates to $1.1 million. If the lower figure of 12 million illegal aliens is used for estimation purposes, the total tax burden translates to $2.2 trillion.
"Over the next ten years the total cost of low-skill households to the taxpayer (immediate benefits minus taxes paid) is likely to be at least $3.9 trillion," Rector writes. "This number would go up significantly if changes in immigration policy lead to substantial increases in the number of low-skill immigrants entering the country and receiving services." “end quote”
You see, my checkbook has already been open, as well as yours, and EVERY other LEGAL AMERICAN TAXPAYING CITIZEN (black, brown, yellow, green, blue, and yes, white). The Federal government is guilty of not enforcing the immigration laws. The city of Fremont is merely wanting the Federal law to be enforced at the local level, which they have EVERY RIGHT TO! Those “trillions” of dollars that we ARE ALREADY PAYING could really be used somewhere else for a better America.
So the cost of a law suit seems trivial at this point. There are those who wish to cut our loses NOW and protect our community NOW. If the federal and state level wants to back down from, or initiate lawsuits because WE THE PEOPLE take our own action, then a counter suit to both levels should be warranted for NOT enforcing the law AS WRITTEN!They should also be held liable for any crimes committed by ILLEGAL immigrants.
Now, if there is a BETTER way as some would suggest, I would love to see your plan of engagement to ENFORCE THE IMMIGRATION LAWS IN THE CITY OF FREMONT. Go ahead and lay it out!

Immigration? You bet! As long as it is done through the legal process set forth by this nation!

To NECONSERVATIVE- It does not take much thought after reading your post that the obvious answer would be to change the tax laws. Not just for "illegals" but, everyone. I know a lot of people that do not pay any taxes because of deductions, write offs, business expense-and they have 2 or 3 kids in the school system! The answer would be maybe a flat tax or a "consumption tax" eliminate all the loop holes-

Why would you want the Tribune to shut down "FREE SPEECH" on a public forum?

Typically they will feel it has run its course and shut it down long before the public loses interest. This has been done on many forums that were being read and commented on. As recently as over the past weekend.

What I would rather see is a complete listing of forums that are available for comment until they positively die a natural death.

I was against Bob Warner's proposed ordinance, however I am very aware of what the word ILLEGAL means. In fact, I am against illegal immigration. I think immigration reform is terribly, terribly overdue. I am also frustrated that nothing seems to be done about it.

I can also say with confidence that so is Skip Edwards and the other councilmen who voted against the ordinance.

What nobody seems to understand or say is that the ordinance was not going to solve anything. The ordinance only applies to the city of Fremont. The largest employers of Hispanic workers are Hormel and Fremont Beef....neither of them are in the city limits and would not be affected. The largest population of Hispanics in the area are in Regency (Inglewood) and Meadowbrook trailer courts. Neither are in the city limits and are not affected.

This ordinance did not have any "teeth". It would have only affected a very small number of Hispanics who could have simply moved to Regency or Meadowbrook. They wouldn't have to leave Fremont at all.

I would love to see immigration reform. I can guarantee you that so would Skip and the others. Lets take this energy and passion and channel it where it might do some actual good and STOP HURTING EACH OTHER. We're on the same side..... lets find a meaningful and productive way to a solution.

reading the commments on here makes me think that a majority of this town wanted to the ordinance to pass. it's a shame that it was voted down by one mans vote. the illegals will NEVER go away even if the Federal Gov't got off it's lazy hind quarters and did it's job. too many people believe that this country would just waste away without them--- even though it was fine 50 years ago before they invaded. yeah- and i say invaded because they are illegals aliens! if you wanna think i'm racist- go ahead.

after reading "someones getting it right" post maybe it should be printed in the tribune.. it's amazing that in Hazleton Penn. they can pass a similar ordinance without fear of a lawsuit. Geez- i wonder if they have a meat packing plant-- and if they do-if it's shut down and dust is already setteling on the knifes?

to everyone who thinks oh- they're just here trying to make a better for their families-- phooey on that. what about the one who was smuggling naughty stuff across the border and the border agents shot at him after telling him to halt... now they sit in prison and the illegal has full amnesty to walk around in this country. guess he was just doing what he had to do to feed his family.

i totally applaud ICE for raiding that kosher plant in Iowa awhile back. but now the church and food pantries are helping the illegals out! yeah i understand they gotta eat- but when the food pantries and church are ran dry because of them-- who do think they will turn to- to fill it back up? I doubt the illegals will be there to hand over any food or money.

The Hazelton, Pa., ordinance was ruled unconstitutional in 2007 and the city has never been able to enforce the law, which was passed in 2006. The city is appealing the 2007 decision, but as of last week no dates for oral arguments have been set. Funny how some keep pointing out Hazelton and other cities (and states) but don't give the whole story.

To Re Phooey: If you read the post the whole point was to point out that their city council voted for it. They voted for it because that's what the people of their community want.

There was no need for me to post further information because I was not speaking to the legalities of it, only that they were a city council willing to do what the people wanted. Even if, as you pointed out, they have to fight for it.

Unlike certain city council persons I don't have to be shady or hide information. (Seriously. A prepared speech for a vote that's not even suppose to take place that evening?!)

I don't think anyone has anything against immigrants, our country was founded on them. But the law is the law and working and taking advantage of others when you are not here legally is against the law. I don't begrudge any one a better life but stealing from the ones in our own country who need it is another thing, why should they get the same advantages as us?? They say we've done nothing wrong, we just wanted to make money, well you know the rules then learn the language and become a citizen like you know you should. How can you live with yourselves knowing you are an illegal and taking what is not yours, what an example for your children!!

I guess it is time for another history lesson.

To "someones Getting it Right"
The city of Hazelton did vote in a similar ordinance but Federal Judge James Munley ruled it unconstitutional. My guess, is it cost the city around $500,000 in legal fees. Fremont with its vast resources of legal knowledge could return the same verdict for about
$976.00. You could always use the waterpark as collateral.
Don't you get it! This is a Federal issue. Write You Federal Reps!!!It isn't like they have done anything for you. We have two Presidential candidates that both want to give amnesty. Your fight is heroic but futile. All I can say is that Metro teaches Spanish; fall enrollment is coming soon.

First, have a little "study session" (that doesn't have to be reported), agree to have a "tie vote" on the issue, then have the Mayor have a prepared statement ready to read as he breaks the tie, bringing an end to an unpleasant event for the Council as they wash their hands of the whole nasty business. And that's the way the big boys do it. Welcome to politics 101.

Thank you,Betsy, for giving me something to laugh about....I really do appreciate it!

I am not sure,Betsy...but...I think the Tribune may have a age limit on who can legally post a comment. I believe it is like 16 years of age....don't worry I won't turn you in for being under that age limit...you see, I believe in FREEDOM OF SPEECH....even if it is totally rediculous!!

Again, thanks Betsy!! You are a keeper!

Well time for another reading/comprehension lesson I guess.

For the second time now, the post was not about the LEGALITY of the issue or how much it would cost.

I was speaking to those who feel that our city council did not represent them in the way that they felt they should have.

No wonder there's so much uproar over all this. People read only what they want to read when someone posts something.

I am very proud to NOT be originally from this town. The ideas of this ordinance are horrendous, and I'm glad the "no" voters prevailed. All this did was point out the racists in this town. If you are so mentally deranged to believe this is not about RACE, then I feel sorry for you. Wow.

Earlier, someone wrote that if this were about Canadians, we'd be equally upset. Do you know about the Canadians crossing the borders? They "blend" better, so you can't draw the same racist conclusions as quickly. Don't convince yourself this isn't about race. That is entirely what this is about.

Immigration reform is necessary. Yes. But little old Fremont, Nebraska isn't capable of changing an entire governmental system. Seriously. You've got to be kidding me.

Again, I am proud to not be from this town. We absolutely look FOOLISH, RACIST, and IGNORANT. If you don't think so, think again.
