Three Rivers District Health Department is reminding those who work outdoors to take protective measures to avoid being bitten by the mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus.
People who work outdoors are at higher risk of the infection due to their potential exposure to mosquitoes.
While no cases have been reported locally, director Jeff Kuhr said clinical positive reports have come from Merrick County and Douglas County, which are neighboring districts.
Three Rivers urges businesses and agencies employing outdoor workers to learn about West Nile virus and provide training or educational materials to their employees. Some employers may also choose to provide insect repellents or protective clothing to employees. All businesses and agencies are encouraged to eliminate sources of standing water where mosquitoes breed.
The health department has a Web page with West Nile virus prevention recommendations at: www.threeriverspublichealth.org.
