Corner Bar expanding business

Randy Trahan stands in the rain, perched in the bed of a dump truck, late Tuesday morning, helping his demolition crew load plaster, lath and trash into the truck.

Trahan, who owns the Corner Bar at Third and Main streets, is helping to expedite the gutting of the building next door, formerly Claussen’s.

“I bought it as is,” Trahan tells a friend who stops by to check the place out.

After several dump trucks full of garbage were hauled out, what remains is an empty shell and a dream.

“I needed more space,” Trahan said.

Trahan is taking the recently purchased building and expanding the Corner Bar to almost double the size.

“I’ve been trying to buy the building for six years,” Trahan said.

“There will be two doors from (Corner Bar) to here,” Trahan said, “We’ll have bigger pool tournaments, darts, pretty much everything we’ve had, we’ll do bigger.”

There will also be a stage for live music in the new building and Trahan said that the new addition will be available for special occasions.

“Wedding parties, birthday parties, private meetings -- anybody who needs the space,” Trahan said.

One of the driving forces behind the new purchase is the statewide smoking ban, due to take effect in June 2009.

Trahan wanted to be proactive to the ban and saw an opportunity in the rear of the Claussen’s building with a brick lined storeroom.

“It’s 40 foot by 24 foot back there,” Trahan said, “With no roof on it, it will be a smoking area.”

The Corner Bar intends to see the new addition completed in the near future.

“I’ve got Bluehouse scheduled for Dec. 20,” Trahan said, “We just don’t have the space next door.”

Probably twice the fights, and twice the problems as well.
yeah right
Sep 3, 2008 11:26 AM
Am I the only one who finds it incredibly sad that there is a bike rack in front of The Corner Bar, that is usually full even on days with bad weather? I guess it beats letting the drunks out driving motor vehicles, but geesh...
One day I counted 7 bikes there. 4 in the rack, 2 on the landing and 1 next to the building.
I guess this is the popular bar for those with DUIs.
to whom it may concern
Sep 3, 2008 11:45 AM
In respomse to the last comment by JB maybe they should go to every other bar on any givven night to see that fights happen anywhere. I am really tired of hearing that the Corner Bar is LABELED as a bad bar. Why do people have to try and make things bad before things really happen. How many of these people that have labled the Corner Bar bad been in there before, maybe you should try it first before saying things you don't know.

For those of you who believe what "JB" says evidentially has not been to Corner for a very long time. I see more problems at other bars especially Frank & Ole's than at Corner. Everyone who goes to Corner gets along and always has a good time. Of course there will be a disagreement amongst people at times but that comes with the alcohol, the difference is at Corner they know how to resolve it before there is a problem. Don't believe me ask the police which bar they are called to the most. Corner had a bad reputation years ago, some people are just too narrow minded to get past it and see that it is probably one of the safer bars to go to with great service. I am very excited for the building to be done, it will be very nice to go listen to a band without all the drama the other bars offer. Good Luck Randy! I wish you the very best!!

And in response to "yeah right"...I know for a fact that 6 out of 7 of the people riding those bikes DO have licenses and are riding their bikes so they DO NOT drink and drive. Maybe if other bars had bike racks there wouldn't be so many DUI's. You people need to get your facts straight before you go assuming things.

Good job, Randy. Can't wait to "drive" from Lincoln to hang out. Congratulations.

I've been in enough fights at the Corner Bar to attest to the fact that, yes, it is filled with worst people this town has to offer.
Increasing the size of this place isn't helping Fremont, thats for sure.
Maybe they will rename the place with a more apptly named title "Downtown Meth Users Hangout"

Brilliant!

Geez, from what I hear, there are more police calls to Frank & Oly's than Corner Bar - and their parking lot is next to a residential area. Good luck to Corner owners and thanks for trying to make something out of one of the downtown buildings that otherwise would have sat and rotted!

Every time I come to Fremont to go out, my first stop is always Corner Bar--they make the best Sex on the Beach drinks and service is great!
Congrats on the new addition!

And to JB---have you ever been to any other bar especially the one in the old Kindlers building? Fights all the time!
Looking forward to it
Sep 3, 2008 12:38 PM
I have been to the Corner Bar here and there over the last 10 years and it isn't any different than any other bar in Fremont. Fights will happen anywhere. It is nice to see a local business expanding and investing in our local economy. Good Luck Corner Bar.

isnt this just typical of fremont? a bigger place for the drunks, dui's, and otherwise low lifes to hang out. we cant get good decent companies here in fremont but have no problem getting more and or bigger drunk tanks. i would love to see fremont and or dodge county go dry. sure would help the police.

Way to go Randy! Someone accutally trying to improve downtown and use those ugly vacant buildings. To bad so many people see the negative side of a larger bar but that's just the way this town works. And the smoking area is a great addition for a bar and will be easy to stay out of the public view. Good for you Randy and I look forward to the bands and opening night. Three cheers!!!

just what we need expand a place like the corner bar so more drunks can come out staggering around and yelling . a decent person dont dare even walk past the place on a nice walk around the city .very sad the city will let a place like this expand.very discusting

I find it kinda funny....if you read through the comments made thus far....

EVERYONE is in agreement that 'all' of the bars are bad news and attract the appropriate clientel.....but...to sorta
justify the 'bad bar' they go to by
saying 'the other bar' is worse then the bar I go to!!

Does that sound like some of the disagreements people had when we were all still in high school?

Anyway...I find it all funny...and if
I have offended any bar owner in Fremont
you know what...who cares!?! And note I was the only person who had the courage to put their name on their comment...step up people...if you have the courage to say it...tack on your name!!

I'm really excited to hear about the expansion of the Corner Bar and that they provide a bike rack to patrons. Having been to the Corner Bar in the past I can say, I've never had any negative issues with the clientele. However, every bar is going to have its share of shady characters or people who over celebrate.

The Corner Bar isn't my favorite bar to frequent (Silver Dollar is); just because the Corner bar is completely across town. I bring this up is because I enjoy riding my bike to the bar because it's good exercise and not to mention the cheapest / safest way to enjoy yourself.

A city cab would be another option if you don't own a bike. Linda is always on time and the rides are surprisingly cheap.

Maybe when things are finalized, I'll have to stop in and see what all the hubbub is about. What's an additional 4 miles biking round trip weather permitting, Tour De Bar anyone?
Did I Hear Tour De Bar
Sep 3, 2008 2:48 PM
Those were the days!!
C'mon Brad... one more for old time sake?

That was one time when I actually went into different bars in which normally I wouldn't have frequented.

It was a nice change of pace and a fun time for all.

Sep 3, 2008 4:39 PM
Joseph--i did use my name on my post: TRAN.

TO FREMONTER:

at least when someone goes to a bar they are inside an establishment and for the majority of people, they have a couple drinks and leave without disruption. Can you say that for the whack jobs standing on the corner by WalMart yelling and screaming through a megaphone at anyone who looks hispanic?

You want Fremont to be a dry town, but I wonder who would yell and scream on a street corner unless they were drunk? Maybe Carl a.k.a. wannabe mayor can answer that question. I've never seen anyone standing outside of Corner Bar yelling profanities through a megaphone.

Also, you say only low life's hang out at Corner Bar? Well, this low life drives a Lexus and has a very good job and high salary. Maybe you should visit the bar before you make future judgements.

What the police need to be patroling is all the white people protesting anyone with brown skin. BTW...my skin is darker than most hispanics, just try yelling at me....

Drugs are EVERYWHERE in this town. Dont point the finger at one bar ... you are only kidding yourself. Drunk people ... they are EVERYWHERE too. They all go to different bars, but one is no better than the other.

People with DUI's would probably be on probation,so they wouldn't be drinking anyway. If the bike riders are not driving around in cars, they have learned their lessons. That's LESSONS because it often takes more than once. Good luck,Randy. And good luck to the bike riders also.

Congrats Randy! You have come along way and really cleaned up the bar. It is a great place to meet friends and just sit there and chew the fat. People don't realize that your successful business adds to the coffers here in Fremont in the way of taxes, downtown improvement taxes, employment and many other ways. You have cleaned up the outside of the building making it attractive to the public. Keep up the good work!

congratulations on the add-on.. and just for those who are commenting negativly on the new addition you have either never been there or your first and only time there you had an issue.. well everybar in fremont has issues from time to time.. any where you drink and then drive you have a chance for dui. that includes your own home..
i for one am excited to see the end result of the addition maybe i will start to go there more often.

Is anyone aware in these comments that it is illegal to drink and drive on a bicycle as well? Its the same charge as driving a car drunk- DUI.

Good Luck with your reopening. No one should be judgemental over something that isn't even completed yet. Sounds like Randy is trying to enhance the bar. Cheer him on, he is making changes for the better, takes time.I hope we can have a class reunion there Go'72

You are incorrect about it being the same charge.

Re: Beldar

No rickshaw rides for you!

Re: JC

I've called the local Fremont police station within the past year and you can't receive a DUI for riding your bike drunk.

However, that doesn't mean you can't get public intoxication (disorderly conduct) if you're belligerent, disrespectful or just plain asking for trouble with a police officer.
Cyclist
Sep 4, 2008 1:58 PM
TO JC:
Yes I am aware. It's called a ticket for public intoxication. Bicyling as a form of recreation and excersise, and to some extent as a means of transportation has become increasingly popular in Fremont. It's been shown that riding a bike requires a higher level of motor skills than driving a car. Bike riding and alcohol is a lethal combination.

Where did you find this information??? I just searched the DMV and all they talk about is 'motor vehicle'. can you back up your information or are you blowing smoke?

Sep 4, 2008 2:14 PM
What is with all the arguing, Randy is just a business owner who is trying to expand and do what will benefit his investment. Any problems, such as fights, that occur at any bar is due, for the most part, because of alcohol. Drugs...come on people, this town is infested with them, they are everywhere...and to point a finger at one establishment is so close minded. As for bikes (in front of ANY bar)...whether or not the charge is the same for DUI...I for one, being a parent of a younger child, feel safer with a drunk sitting on a bicycle peddling home then one behind the wheel of a vehicle that puts innocent people at greater risk of harm or death. Some people just arent happy unless they are complaining!

I am glad to see another place other than the Remedy (COUNTRY USUALLY) having LIVE BANDS... we drive to Omaha on the weekends for music venues.

Randy - keep the music coming and the remodeling will pay off.

good for Randy!

i hope it all works out for him, too bad a bar owner can't be the one to choose if his establishment will be smoking or not, and then post it as such, so that people will know that that bar is a smoking bar, and the one down the street is a no smoking bar..

anyway, good luck Corner Bar!

Sep 4, 2008 3:32 PM
I agree with the person who said that more music venues is a good thing!!!

We also have to usually drive to
Omaha to see live music, so more place in Fremont that offer live music is great!

I want to say "HELL YEAH", it is about time we get another bar that will have more music commin through. Yes corner bar has been known for the drunks and druggies but I think Randy has done a great job with cleaning the bar up. I have to say that corner bar is my fav. bar in town and im glad they are making it bigger. Congrads Randy keep up the good work and a great bar!!

Sep 4, 2008 5:10 PM
So....let me get this straight. Fremont can't support any decent places to eat, but the fast food joints and places like The Corner Bar are expanding and thriving. Wow...maybe we should quit worrying about the illegals that are here and start worrying about the quality of "legal" citizens living here - can we get an ordinance to keep them out?

Hey, Beldar:
I saw Prymaat at the Corner the other night-and I have to say, she looked pretty good-and I was tempted. She'd consumed mass quantities of alcohol. The Corner is not the type of place she should go alone-its not like some bistro back in France.
whatever
Sep 5, 2008 12:20 AM
Nothing but the truth-- The reason that the fast food and bars thrive in this town is because that is the type of industry and jobs we have here. Meat packing plants, and the hospital are the biggest employers here in town.

The residents of a community support the establishments their pocketbooks can afford. If you want higher caliber residents we need higher caliber jobs.

Way to go Randy - what great business sense. You are being proactive - instead of sitting around complaining about the impending smoking ban. It's nice to see a Fremont business maturing - adding a party room and stage is a great addition for all of Fremont. Hopefully, some of the "judgers" of the bar will attend the re-opening - maybe they will enjoy themselves. A group can have a nice dinner at Andy's or J's Steakhouse - then go listen to some live music - that's a HUGE step for Fremont! No bar that I've been to - ANYWHERE - can compare in service to the Corner. They make it a point to remember customers and are at your beckon call ..... even before you call!

To those commenting - the article is about the expansion of the Corner Bar - not whether you approve of its existence or its patrons.

In my opinion, you people complaining are a bunch off stuck up, judgemental WHINNERS!! If you don't like Corner Bar...don't go there.
There are ALL different types of people that go to corner...that's why I like it. I ALWAYS see someone I know.
The bar has needed to expand for a long time because it is ALWAYS PACKED. Randy has awsome business because he takes care of his customers and contrary to what some might think....he does NOT put up with the bull*$#@. If someone starts a fight...they're outta there.
Can't wait till it's done.
Congratulations Randy!!

I have a couple of things to say about this topic.
1) why are people so threatened by other people's lifestyle? You're not going to change anyone's opinion, or life for that matter, posting on the fremont tribune website.
2)If the corner bar is as bad as people say it is, then city officials would be working on that problem
3)Would you rather have all the drunks/addicts in one place than spread throughout the city?
4)The expansion the the bar allows for more customers, and with more customers means more revenue through taxes for the city.
5)The live bands will (hopefully) keep people in fremont instead of going to Omaha to enjoy the entertainment. As well as give local artists a chance to showcase their talents.
The biggest reason I support the expansion is because it shows that small businesses can succeed, as well as the increased revenue that will stay in fremont, allowing us to attract better businesses and better paying jobs.

I have gone to Corner Bar for years and I have always felt comfortable at that bar since I know that Randy and his staff WATCH out for there customers so that nothing will happen they can feel safe to go in there and drink and know that nothing is going to happen to them if they are single and alone I dont think I could say the same about any other bar when the bartenders dont even try to learn your name BUT Randy and his staff know just about everyone who goes in there and they ususally stop some of the problem people at the door SO to all of you who think you know that corner bar is sooo bad you should try walking in there and I bet you get better service there then any other bar.
