I believe that Mayor "Skip" Edwards was right to vote against the illegal immigrant ordinance. This law, as written, is a bad law. Nebraska’s attorney general has advised that it is probably unconstitutional and therefore unenforcable. Are we ready to litigate this all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court?
I am against illegal immigration. I get especially frustrated when I see illegal immigrants on national television demanding more rights. Illegals should not be eligable for driver’s licenses, welfare, instate resident college tuition, or other government benefits. I am aware that Mexican gangs are becoming more active in Fremont. I would rather give more money to the police to fight crime. Others want to burden them with checking every renter’s nationality. I don’t think $5 will cover the cost of such documentation.
Petition organizers say illegals place a fiscal burden on the city. I think this law will cost far more to defend than any benefits that will be derived from it. They say illegals hold down wages. I believe this law will discourge businesses from locating in Fremont. This could strangle our local economy. Petition organizers say illegals are overcrowding our schools. I would remind them that the Fremont Public School District extends beyond Fremont city limits. This law will have limited effect on our schools.
I am not against a public vote. I am against rushing a bad law into effect before we have all the facts. We have a task force in place to find these facts. There are some questions that need answers. How many illegals are in Fremont? What is the actual cost to Fremont? How can we address this problem without punishing every renter and employer in Fremont?
Let’s calm down. Let’s get the facts. Then let’s vote.
