More than 75 people gathered Thursday at the Dragonfly Day Spa and Tea Room for the Giving Wings Benefit for Crisis Center for Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault.

“(The event) was held to raise funds for direct services to the programs we provide,” said Suzanne Smith, executive director for the Crisis Center.

The evening began with a silent auction at 6 p.m., followed by a live auction at 7:30 p.m. and a short program on the services provided by the Crisis Center.

The auctioneering was donated by Jay Nitz.

“We also had our silent witnesses and survivor stories on display,” said Smith.

“(The benefit) was sponsored by the Dragonfly,” Smith said, “They were very gracious. They provided food and the beverages and many of our big auction items.”

Auction items ranged from gift certificates to a dinner for six with the Fremont Fire Department to a week in the Bahamas.

“We had a lot of wonderful donations,” said Jolene Tawney, Crisis Center development director, “including a week’s stay in the Bahamas complete with housekeeping, gardener, cook, the works. (The trip) was donated by the owners of the Dragonfly, Duane and Jill Crithfield.”

“It went wonderful, we had a beautiful turn out. We are grateful for everyone who came out. I think that it was very successful and a very good event for a worth while cause,” Tawney said.

Smith said the Crisis Center intends to make the Giving Wings Benefit an annual event.

“After a preliminary count, we believe we raised over $14,000, which is an incredible, incredible gift.” Smith said.

Was this event by invitation only? If not, why was it not publicized? Could have been even more successful with more in attendance, but maybe it is more important to them to say exclusive.
