It’s time again, welcomed or not, for the newest installment of the Fremont Tribune Prediction Challenge. The initial panel of experts has been whittled down to 11 and will cast their useless, if not backward predictions of high school, college and NFL football games this fall.

Back to defend his over-sized crown is Duane Grashorn, regional manager for People Services Inc. The 2006 champion, Tammy Greunke of the Fremont Tribune, also returns along with Brett Ellis, Lou’s Sporting Goods; Brent Wasenius, Fremont Tribune managing-sports editor; Brian Essen, Lattin-Dugan Funeral Home; Mike Leise, Fremont YMCA; and Billy Boggy, Midland Lutheran College men’s golf coach and Fremont Golf Club assistant pro.

This year’s challenge welcomes newcomers Theo Bland, Midland Lutheran College assistant football coach; Don Dravland, The Pines Country Club pro; and the return of Bob Bendig, Fremont Area Medical Center.

The so-called expert picks for this week are as follows:

Mike Leise

Elkhorn at Fremont High: Sam Pimper will have a great game for the Tigers to help upset Elkhorn. It is great to see a Pimper actually see time on the field unlike his father, Dave, in the 1970’s ... Fremont 21, Elkhorn 14.

Tammy Greunke

Fremont Bergan at Ponca: Bergan’s offense features a new quarterback and the Prediction Challenge returns with a new ringleader. My instincts say the Knights will make a stronger statement in their opener ... Bergan 28, Ponca 7

Brett Ellis

Bennington at Wahoo Neumann: Neumann will not lose in back-to-back weeks. For Rich Rodriguez’s sake, the Michigan Wolverines better hope they can say the same thing ... Neumann 24, Bennington 16.

Don Dravland

Tekamah-Herman at DC West: Josh Egbarts will break another record with his legs. He is unstoppable at running the football. The defense will show up for this one ... DC West 21, Tekamah-Herman 7.

Billy Boggy

San Jose State at Nebraska: I would first and foremost like to thank everybody at the Tribune for asking Theo Bland to take part in the prediction challenge so I can now beat two people (Leise). I would also like to invite the other panelists to a victory party because ladies and gentleman I got this thing wrapped up. By the way, Huskers win big!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Huskers 56, Whoever they play 10.

Theo Bland

Georgia Tech at Boston College: Just want to say thanks for letting me in to the Prediction challenge this year. I’m picking GT over BC in a close game. This will be a solid win for GT. ... I’m hoping GT’s heads don’t swell up like Boggy’s belly. Good luck guys! ... Georgia Tech 21, Boston College 17.

Tony Gray

Green Bay at Minnesota: Like Brett Favre, Grashorn was going to be traded this season for celebrity picker Adam Vinatieri, the only player to end a Super Bowl with a game-winning field goal, but a threatening letter scared him away. Must have been sent by a Rams fan. Wait! Grashorn’s a Rams fan. Something’s fishy. Nothing fishy about this game ... Vikings 17, Packers 3.

Brent Wasenius

Washington at NY Giants: Les Miles of LSU, Eli Manning of the New York Giants and Duane Grashorn of “The Prediction Challenge” were the big winners of last season. All of those who will repeat please take a step forward ... not so fast Mr. Grashorn. OK, Eli probably won’t repeat either, but the Giants will get past the Redskins ... Giants 24, Redskins 14.

Duane Grashorn

Kansas City at New England: Looks like Kansas City will set the tone for this season with an opening loss to New England. No matter who is in the lineup for New England, this one should be over early ... Patriots 38, Chiefs 10.

Brian Essen

Texas A&M at New Mexico: The first week of the season proved one thing, neither Texas A&M nor New Mexico can field an offense. It is quite possible the defense for each team will provide most of the scoring. I would once again like to offer an olive branch to the participants in this contest. May your predictions be true, may you show no malice toward your competitors and may you all finish behind me ... Texas A&M 24, New Mexico 7.

Bob Bendig

Midland Lutheran at Concordia University: This game will do down to the wire, Concordia wins with a field goal in the final seconds. ... Concordia 24, Midland 21

Fremont will win?? C'mon Leise. FHS should go undefeated every year based on these predictions. It's too bad these guys aren't willing to state the obvious - that Fremont will lose - just to try and prevent any feelings from being hurt. I would really like to see someone have the guts to pick against the local teams. Elkhorn 28, FHS 7.

Mr. Bland: I am not impressed-you seem very rude by your comments. Let's keep it professional and not personal.

George and kbv, you must be new because that's what these guys do.

And truth, do these 15-18 year old players really need to be beat down any more that what losing already does? And I'm glad you have the "guts" to put your name on your pick there bud.
