What’s the biggest issue for most people this election year?
If you listen to the national media, it’s the economy.
There is little doubt most people have felt the pinch from higher fuel and food prices. But the economic news isn’t all doom and gloom in the Fremont area.
"We still have a decent economy because of the agricultural influence right now," said John Kennedy, general manager/sales manager at Sid Dillon Chevrolet Pontiac Buick in Fremont. "Because of that, we aren’t feeling quite the effect that other places are."
All three of Fremont’s new car dealerships are seeing changes in buying habits, but people still are buying vehicles.
"Our new vehicle sales are staying consistent. That has not dropped off," said Tim King, sales manager at Gene Steffy Chrysler Jeep Dodge. "But in used cars, people are looking at what gets the best gas mileage."
While Kennedy and others point out a strong ag sector of the economy, others see challenges ahead for farmers.
"The volatility of the input prices make it a real challenge," said Dave Varner, extension educator with the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension in Dodge County.
"The stakes are higher now," he added.
Like everyone else, farmers have seen fuel prices skyrocket. They’ve also seen the cost of fertilizers triple over the past few years.
But some farmers have invested in new equipment and demand is up at two Fremont implement dealers - Platte Valley Equipment Co. and Victor’s Inc.
"The demand is up," said Brad Victor of Victor’s. "The demand is always there from the larger farmers. Some of the smaller farmers are now thinking about buying new equipment."
For the most part, it seems area residents aren’t cutting corners on healthcare.
"There’s nothing to indicate people are seeking less healthcare," said Mike Sindelar, assistant vice president of Finance at Fremont Area Medical Center.
