WISNER -- Fremont Bergan took control early and went on to win both of its matches Thursday in the Northeast Volleyball Classic at Wisner-Pilger High School.
Bergan opened with a 25-9, 25-16 win over Allen.
Karen Liekhus had 19 assists, one kill and two ace serves for the Lady Knights. Junior Courtney Cook had 10 kills, one block and six digs while Kelsie Rogers had four kills and an ace.
Megan Liekhus had 10 digs and two ace serves. Kari Schmitz had nine digs and two kills and Jordan Ruskamp had six digs and two aces.
Bergan, rated third in Class C-2 by the Lincoln Journal Star, then downed Wakefield 25-11, 25-13.
Cook had 11 ace serves, five kills and two blocks. Rogers had five blocks and three kills while Megan Liekhus and Kortney Classen had two kills apiece.
“The girls were more relaxed in the Wakefield match,” Bergan coach Sue Wewel said. “The offense and defense performed much better in that match. I thought that for the first two matches of the year, the girls came out strong and did a really nice job.”
Bergan advances to the gold division of the tournament at 8:30 Saturday morning in Wisner.
