Schaffner’s bid comes up short

It appears Carl Schaffner’s bid to have his name placed on the Fremont mayoral ballot has fallen short.

On his Web site, www.carl4mayor, Schaffner wrote Friday night that only 1,404 of the 1,520 signatures submitted could be validated - 15 short of the total needed.

Schaffner posted the information about 5:30 p.m. Verification from Dodge County Clerk Fred Mytty was not available.

"To all those that helped in the campaign, thank you," Schaffner wrote. "We fought the good and honest fight."

The Fremont man had sought to have his name placed on the November general election ballot. He decided to try to challenge Mayor "Skip" Edwards after Edwards casts the deciding vote against an ordinance that would have banned the harboring, renting to or hiring of illegal immigrants.

Schaffner turned in the petitions on Tuesdays, hours before the deadline.

He said if he did not have enough valid signatures that he would not run as a write-in candidate. Schaffner said that would muddy the waters, especially since Wes Homes had declared himself a write-in candidate.

Does this mean his group of misfits will no longer be yelling profanities through megaphones at WalMart on the weekends?

I'm glad. Not that I don't think that we could use some new leadership in Fremont, but Carl Schaffner isn't what we need.
Problem still exists
Sep 6, 2008 8:57 AM
The ansolutely deplorable quality of mayoral leadership will stay in place now. All at the expense of Fremont. Fremont could be a "can do" city and prosper. But it needs fresh leadership with experience, vision, ability and knowledge. Not a retiree.
Maybe Fremont doesn't deserve that quality?

First, let me say that I've never met nor do I know Carl Schaffner.

Have you heard the saying, "Americans do not like poor losers?"

I'd like to turn that around and coin a new phrase, "Americans...also don't like
poor winners."

Mark,Angi, H. Kiefer and I am sure others will follow as the check out todays FREMONT TRIBUNE...I would like
to remind people...this is way a democratic form of government works, and thank God we live in America.

Hey, give Carl a break, people....he did something (right or wrong)he believed in and had the COURAGE to step up and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!

What is so wrong about that? And in particular...Angi your remark "does this mean his group of misfits will no longer be yelling profanities, etc." If
they were in fact using profanity..
that is wrong. "Misfits," are you saying that anyone in Fremont that does
not fall in line like a brainless bobble head is a misfit?

Fremont like any city needs those people who can think for themselves verses those people (like grade school kids) fall in line and do what they are told to do.

What's next Mark, Angi and Kiefer.....
anyone who votes 'yes' to put the Illegal Immigration issue on the ballot so 'all' of Fremont can vote on it....
are considered anti-American and misfits too?

That's too bad. I would have liked to hear his plans. I really think we need a new mayor.

Angi ... I never heard anyone yelling profanities through a megaphone by Wal-Mart. I saw people standing there with signs, and having people sign the peition but I have a hard time believing that they were out there cursing and yelling at anyone.

now theres a shock. i personally dont care who runs or wins but it seems to me the fix was in. could it be that some signatures werent counted or just plain forgotten about so the there wont be any competition for skippy? could it be that if there was a new mayor that the "certain few" would lose their stranglehold on fremont? think about it.
Not a math major...
Sep 6, 2008 12:46 PM
I wasn't a math major in college, but I think someone needs to either check their facts again, or their math. When you subtract 1520 and 1404, you don't get 15. I am glad they are not running for our mayor either!

I think Carl would have done a fine job. It is about time for Skip to be done! When is enough, too much? TIME FOR YOU TO RETIRE SKIP!

First of all, I do not know Carl Schaffner, and I've never met him.

Yet...give the guy some credit for stepping up, and doing something he
believed in.

I don't thing he and his supporters deserve to be called "misfits," especially by someone that lacks the
courage to put their name on such a statement.

The last time I checked...America is a democratic form of government that allows 'anyone' to run for a city, county, state or federal office to
serve the people.

Thanks for listening, Angi!!

It is to bad people will mouth off but are to scared to write there name on there posting. This goes to the little girl named Angie. Most of those so called misfits you are speaking about are ex-vets who served there country so you could voice your opinion. If you want to voice your opinion somewhere you have the right to do it with my blessing. Thanks to the so called misfits as you called them you can now do it and don't have to worry about getting arrested. It is your right.

its not just that fremont needs a new mayor, fremont needs all new council members. its just like the federal and state governments. throw them all out and start fresh. thats the only way to get things changed.
votes short...
Sep 6, 2008 9:01 PM
The reason the story says he was 15 votes short is that he needed a minimum of 1419 of the 1520 signatures they collected to be verified as registed voters...they were able to get 1401 valid signatures. Maybe that wasn't clear in the story, but that's how it breaks down.

To Joe and Don:
Gotta go with Angi here. Misfits, rubes, clowns, whatever you want to call them, that's what they acted like. My wife doesn't read the local news and when she saw them, she asked me "who are those dorks and what are they doing?". Well said, I thought.

If you want to run a grass-roots campaign, do what Richard Register did. Of all of the various candidates for whatever office, he's the only one that actually came to my door and asked for my vote. He didn't scream, he didn't wave flags. He just put on his coat and tie, pounded the pavement and respectfully and professionally asked me to vote for him.

As far as the "misfits" being vets, and being exempt from criticism? That's just stupid.

All vets either:
Were drafted against their will.

Enlisted because they had no other career options.

Enlisted because they truly wanted to serve. (Good for them).

It is also true that a fair percentage of vets (up to 30%, maybe more) suffer from various forms of mental illness whether it be depression, PSTD, alcoholism, drug abuse and so on.
So, just because someone is a vet, he or she isn't automatically and universally exempt from criticism. Nor does it automatically make him or her qualified to govern effectively.

Lastly, in the last 60 years this country hasn't had an external threat to anybody's right to voice their opinion. And I didn't see any 80 year-olds out there with Carl and his band of "misfits".

Good-bye, Carl. Hope you enjoyed your less than 15 minutes. Thanks, however, for being a good loser. More than I can say for the rest of the Skip haters.

"Profanity is the attempt of a lazy and feeble mind to express itself forcibly."

I don't know who said it, but it might have served Carl well to let his supporters know that.

I agree with fremonter, we do need a fresh new city council. One that will support the different needs of the town, one that is interested in growth of positive things.

I don't shop at Walmart, so I don't know about all the mess out there. But obviously, they weren't attempting to make that big of a deal. If they were, they would have been more spread out through town. But may be that is my opinion as well.

Fremont has a lot to desire, and a lot of growth needs to happen. But with that growth comes challenges. Everyone needs to realize that every town has it's fair share of problems. Wake up Fremont, and smell the Hormel.

And for the person who cleared up the situation with the votes needed, etc. Thanks! I'm glad to see I was not the only one who struggled with this. Obviously, another weakness of the town can be the journalism, and the reporters. HA!

Mr. Sokolovsky, I would like to redirect you to my post. In it I merely stated that I was glad that Mr. Schaffner didn't make it on the ballot. I feel (and note the use of the word, it shows that this is my opinion and nothing more) that Schaffner was running on one issue and a shady one at that. Just my feelings. In my posts you will find no disrespect towards the man. Perhaps it isn't clear, but when I posted there were no other posts showing at the time, I had no idea what other people had said yet.

So before you lump me in with a group (regardless of whether or not I agree with them) please pay attention to the things I say in their own context.

I would say that anyone yelling profanities through megaphones in public is a misfit. Regardless of service to their country. But I didn't say that in my post. I didn't see them (I do my best to limit my shopping to once a week). I NEVER said anything about misfit or anti-american until now. It seems like you are trying to bait me, and I'd like to respectfully request that you stop.

Bobo is so well spoken. By the far the best poster on the Trib website.

I do believe one needs a mathematics degree to figure out the HQ. At least understand exponents.

Does this mean there is still going to be poo on the bathroom walls at the state lakes that will need to be cleaned? For some, one poster in particular, I hope not.

"He didn't scream, he didn't wave flags."

Good point. Perhaps you can take that same thought process and apply it to all the illegal immigrants and their supporters who scream, march, and wave their flag of origin when they try to tell us how wrong our Government is for wanting illegals to be here legally.

Just a few examples: The National Day of Action and the May Day Marches.

This goes to Tired of Morons--Used to be BoBo.Apparently you are related to Jane Fonda in some way. You stated All vets either were drafted against their will: Sorry to inform you but that is how we won the First & Second world war. If it wasn't for the draftee's you be speaking a different language right now but that apparetly doesn't make you any difference. Secondly you stated we had no other career options. You are right there. A lot of vets served because they could get a college education under the GI bill. A lot of them weren't born with a silver spoon in there mouths and had things paid for them so they served there country for four years or so to get this GI bill and a lot of them died on the battle field and didn't make it home and last you are claiming 30% of the vets have a various forms of mental illness. It is you that have the mental illness and disregard for the veterans. you should be ashamed of yourself for down grading us vets by saying we are suffering from mental illness. I don't know where you escaped from but I hope they catch you and put you back in your little hole where you came from and yes I was one of those so called misfits holding up the American flag and darn proud of it. To bad you aren't.
Change needed
Sep 7, 2008 4:05 PM
Maybe he didn't go about this issue the right way, but at least someone is going to put their foot down and try to make changes. My great grandparents came to this country and did not speak english, but they learned, they became legal citizens of this country, why can't they show the same respect as they did, I don't care they are here, as long as they speak our language and are legal citizens. I work in the medical profession, it is very hard to tranlate though a child to figure out what the problem is with their parents. I should not have to learn their language if they are in this country!!! Changes is definetly needed in this town. There has to be a good way to make changes.

Hey, Bottom Line:
Thanks for reminding me about the HQ. I kinda quit using it since so many posts pegged the meter.
I'll give Don H. a 7. Extra points for sincerity, but he loses points for spelling and for playing the Jane Fonda card.

Joe P gets a full 10. On one hand he lauds Carl for doing something he believed in, yet he's at the front of the line for criticizing Skippy for doing the same.

Mark, Angi, H, and especially John B & Snoop all get 1's.

I had a feeling that Mr Schaffner would come up short, I honestly thought it would be by more than 15 signatures, but kudos to him for doing that well. For once I agree with Fremonter. Fremont does need new leadership! I hope to see that happen soon, but I'm not holding my breath! Next, I would like to thank Mr. Schaffner, Fremonter, and all other Vets for serving our country. I have 2 brothers that are or have been in the service, As a matter of fact, one is in Iraq right now serving his 3rd tour.

Next, I wanted to add that I was asked to sign the petition to add Mr. Schaffner to the ballot, but didn't sign because I wasn't aware of his views on anything but the Illegal Immigration ordinance. I made it clear to the person asking me to sign the petition that until those questions were answered, sorry, I wouldn't do it. Unfortunatly, Mr. Schaffner's website wasn't much help on that either. He has been given the opprotunity to express his views on everything but has chosen not to. I think he could have gotten a lot more signatures if he would have done so. This election is going to be interesting to say the least.

To those of you who are not registered voters, REGISTER, VOTE, and make a difference...I will give Carl credit for that, at least he was trying to make some kind of difference.

Let's all make our voices heard. There is still time to register and it will only take a few minutes of your day!

It seems as though (please correct me if I am wrong) that someone could jump in as a Democrat and challenge. However, with as conservative as this state can be and has been, I don't know that they would get serious consideration simply because of the "D" infront of their name.
TRIBUNE EDITOR
Sep 8, 2008 11:26 AM
TO CMCB:

Anyone wanting to be on the ballot as a Democrat would have had to file in February (if currently holding an elective office) or March. After that, the only way to get your name on the ballot would be by petition. The deadline to turn in those petitions was Sept. 2.

As of now, a person can file to run a write-in campaign. That person's name would not appear on the ballot.

I understand what Bobo was tryng to say about some vets-some have gone a little wacky because of their past experiences, drugs etc. So just being a vet doesn't mean you can't be "off" a little now. Being from the Vietnam era I know quite a few vets and what they did during the war and how they "are" now. Doesn't mean that what they say is gospel and better than anything I say-wasn't that what they fought for? They don't walk on water either. They're no more American than I am, no more loyal to their country than I am just because they enlisted or were drafted. I have gone to the "Wall" and penciled out a few names and put a flag there to show my respects thats my right. So please get a grip, there are many ways to show you love your country without fighting in a war!

And Angi-I also seen the "misfits" yelling at a friend whom they assumed was here illegally from their spot by Walmart-what a classy bunch they are! When yelling at people don't assume they aren't Americans...they are better people than you are by a long shot!
RE Jib Jab
Sep 9, 2008 9:15 AM
Please. You went to the "wall" and stenciled some names? Nobody is saying you don't love your country or you are not patriotic, but please do not belittle the sacrafice of those who served by comparing your stenciling habits to going into harms way.

Some people over read or read into everything anyone writes here- i meant i have relatives and friends on that wall- I know about sacrifice-My dad was a vet, my husband-there are many ways to serve your country than to go to war-and if you cannot admit that some vets have problems than you need to get out of your dream world and help them instead of treating them like they walk on water!
