A cold, blustery day didn’t keep Prucius Wood away from Ridge Cemetery on Sunday.
Well ... actually, an actor portraying Wood helped bring to life the story of a bullwhacker who guided oxen-drawn freight wagons from Omaha to Denver in the days before the railroad.
This was the third year for the Ridge Cemetery Historical Walking Tour, a fundraiser that showcases the city-owned cemetery.
Actors and stories are new each year to create interest in the program.
“We have 13,000 people buried at Ridge. There’s a lot of stories out here,” said Cherrie Beam Clarke, one of the event’s committee members.
Those who came could hear Wood -- played by Fremonter Greg Beam -- talk about his days as a wagoneer.
Vic Rader of Fremont shared the biography of Arundel C. Hull, an early day photographer who, along with Wood, is buried at the cemetery.
Nine presenters participated. Visitors also could see the stately old horse-drawn hearse, which has been restored and belongs to May Museum.
Proceeds will be used for cemetery improvements. Event organizers hope to put tour proceeds toward a reflecting pond and to build a columbarium for cremains, Clarke said. Funds also will be used to help the walking tour continue.
