The Fremont High School girls golf team narrowly missed out on winning the Lincoln East Invitational Thursday at Mahoney Golf Course finishing with a team score of 362 -- five strokes behind Norfolk’s 357.

"Once again Norfolk got by us by only a few strokes and it happened on the first nine holes,” FHS golf coach Maggie Peters said. "We are finishing strong but we need to work on focusing on the first holes with confidence and patience."

Nicole Mooberry of Norfolk was medalist with a 79. McKayla Anderson led Fremont with an 85 for fourth place.

Sophie Peters placed sixth for Fremont with an 87 while Mariel Groh shot a 93 and Anna Saeger a 97 as did Claire Hulett.

"I think all the girls struggled with their putting on the first nine holes. The greens were bumpy, had been aerated, and I heard many of the same comments from about how one green was fast and the next slow and I can't figure them out,” Maggie Peters said. "This is where you hope course management kicks in and they stay conservative on putting and not try to go for every putt."

The coach had special praise for Hulett.

"Claire has improved so much since last year and since the beginning of this year when she started playing varsity golf,” Peters said. “She has learned that playing all 18 holes in a tournament needs concentration and patience for five hours and not to give up. I am very proud of her attitude on the course"

Maggie Peters added that she hopes the team will start to pick up their play soon.

“Last year at this time we had won two invites and placed second in three others and this year it has been second or third behind Norfolk or Marian by only a few strokes,” she said. “We are running out of time and we have to put the heat on now.”
