The speech John McCain should give

John McCain is probably going to lose this election. The economic crisis, which he is ill equipped by training and interests to handle, threatens to wipe out his campaign. Though Barack Obama has shown no greater insight or skill in handling the looming disaster, McCain’s personal deficit on economic policy redounds to his opponent’s benefit.

But McCain has gifts that Obama does not, convictions and leadership traits that the country could very soon need more desperately than a policy expertise. McCain should risk that Americans don’t want to be mollycoddled and manipulated. He would do well to buy commercial time on national television and deliver a speech that goes something like this:

My friends, I am neither young nor eloquent, handsome nor smooth. But I have lived a long life, much of it in service to America in war and in peace. And I have always stood for straight talk. There has been no time in our nation’s recent history when the American people more needed to hear the plain truth from their leaders. A fundamental reason our country faces economic catastrophe is that we have built our lives around running from truths about the American way of life.

Washington has run from the truth. Wall Street has run from the truth. And if we’re honest with ourselves, all of us have, in one way or another, run from the truth.

We have accepted the lie that we can live exactly as we want to live, with no concern for the consequences. We have taken the blessings of liberty and prosperity and turned them into a curse of debt slavery - bondage that will be visited on our children, and our children’s children, if we don’t change.

Everybody has a theory about how we got into this mess, and it’s usually one that absolves them and their party from blame. My friends, I’m here to tell you that this crisis is the Republicans’ fault. It’s the Democrats’ fault. It’s the fault of every one of us who believed in the fairy tale of a free lunch.

It’s time for all Americans to take responsibility for what we’ve done. It’s time for all Americans to pull together to help our families, our neighbors and our country through hard times.

I will not lie to you and tell you that the road ahead will be easy. I will not insult you by giving you simple villains, simple heroes or simplistic solutions. As the song says, everybody wants to get to heaven, but nobody wants to die. My fellow Americans, all of us must sacrifice to endure the trials that history sends our way and to rebuild our nation on a solid foundation of honor, truth and plainspoken virtue.

I know something about sacrifice. And I know something about the way life can break your pride. I was a cocky Navy aviator who thought he was invulnerable. Then I was shot out of the sky and spent five years in prison. That experience did not kill me. It made me stronger. It taught me how much I loved my God, my family and my country - and what trials I could endure for the sake of that love.

I am a patriot. I believe we are a nation of patriots, of men and women who are ready and willing to put country first. But over the years, our leaders, Republican and Democratic, have asked us to do little more than to go shopping, to vote for them and to blame other people for what’s wrong with America. Anything to keep us from facing the truth and changing our ways.

As your president, I will ask you to do hard things. I, too, will do hard things for the good of this great nation. Serious times call for serious leadership. In his first speech as prime minister, with his free nation facing the might of Nazi Germany, Winston Churchill refused to mislead the British people about the gravity of their situation. We remember today his words to them: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."

Churchill did not give cheap optimism. He, too, had fought and suffered for his nation, both on the battlefield and in Parliament. He had known the joy of victory and the humiliation of defeat. What Churchill, from his incomparable experience, could offer his people was the gold standard of hope. Hope is the conviction that whatever suffering we must go through, goodness and right shall prevail.

Today, when I survey the gathering storm, I am certain that if we, the people, stand together without fear or favor, victory will be ours. I ask you to give me the privilege of leading this great nation in a time when heroes will be made, and all good men and women must come to the aid of their country.

Thank you, and God bless America.

Yeah right, What is this guy trying to get a job with FOX News? I thought that was the only place you got this kind of fair and balanced opinion!
Real leaders do not need to use Rovian politics to win. McCain is slime!

Hey "That One" Although I am all for Fair and Balanced reporting! And Love my Foxnews!! I also want to point out I am a "real person" looking for a "real leader"! And Name calling isn't very becoming of you! I also want to say...YES!! HALLELUJAH!! How can I help get this speech in the hands of MCCAIN and Spark a Fire in him to End this Race and Lead this country! If he actually gave a speech like that...this race would be OVER!!!

What an excellent speech, he should be a speech writer full time. That one... I think you're missing the clarity and honesty a speech like this would present to a very large crowd of people that feel that they have been mislead by their representatives. Stay away from the kool-aid for a bit, turn off the regular "love affair with Obama" liberal media once in a while. I can understand not agreeing with someones politics, but calling a hero with that kind of background a slime, shows how much your really hate your country.

Hear, hear. Yes, I know, I spelled it that way on pupose. "That One", is the perfect example of why Obama will most likely be elected. Ignorance of reality. I shudder at what will happen if we elect this "rock star" instead of the right man, or woman for the job. It is just that liberal thinking that will draw this great country of ours into the apathy that will lead us to the socialism that the Democratic party is hoping for. The more dependent we are on the government for everything, the more we lose all control. One Democrat said, "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Now is the time we need to ask and answer that call to action. Most of the issues we are dealing with today were caused by actions of the administration before President Bush. Get the facts straight before you blame the wrong people. Google "bank deregulation" and see where it leads you.

There is a comment in here about how much McCain loves his family. I am surprised that no one has mentioned the fact that while his wife was waiting for him to come home from the war and she was injured badly in an accident, John McCain cheated on her when he came home AND applied for a marriage license with his current wife BEFORE he was divorced from the last one. Saw this on CNN. Family values party-right? When asked about the marriage license, he said he didn't remember that he applied for it before the end of his last marriage. There was more than one woman he ran around on her with as well. What a field day the republicans would have if it was Obama that did that. So Mr Straight Talking Maverick was not so straight with his family.

Tex,
I do not in any way condone what John McCain did more then 30 years ago with his first wife in anyway shapeor form.
2. However, you in a recent debate about politics on a recent Clinton
vs baby Bush said Bill's affair with Monica was none of the country's business and had no effect on his running the country. (It was is private life)Now you say John McCain's affair over 30-35 years ago is an issue. Cant have it both ways.
3. Obama running around with a domestic terrorist (Bill Ayers) who has not only NO remorse but wishes he had done more is far worse then John McCain's affair which had no effect on his political actions b/c he was not in office at the time. He was rebuilding his life from the abuse he suffered from his POW years. Have a good day.

Brian, you have a good memory and I still say that these things are not the countries business but Republicans can't have it both ways either so if they are going to use so much personal info then they need to know they are going to get that back. I think Democrats have been a little too standoffish on these things because it doesn't work for one side to engage in it and not the other. So I think we should have at it especially since the Republicans are always thinking they are more moral.

Let's see now....there is the economy, the financial crisis, health insurance, war on terrorism, social security, etc.

And some people are concerned about "that one."

Even Ms. Michelle "I am wonderful" Obama said, "that one...forget it...
move on the more important issues."

So....pea-brains....move on!!

From the Washington Post Fact Checker

The only hard facts that have come out so far are the $200 contribution by Ayers to the Obama re-election fund, and their joint membership of the eight-person Woods Fund Board.
Obama spokesman Bill Burton noted in a statement that Ayers was a professor of education at the University of Illinois and a former aide to Mayor Richard M. Daley, and continued:
Senator Obama strongly condemns the violent actions of the Weathermen group, as he does all acts of violence. But he was an eight-year-old child when Ayers and the Weathermen were active, and any attempt to connect Obama with events of almost forty years ago is ridiculous.

to Joseph P. Sokolovsky:
pea brains? very good. i like that. all politicians are liars. they tell us what we want to hear. you just have to weigh all the lies and pick the one you want to vote for. plain and simple. i hope no one thinks that just because we get a new president, that things are going to change for the better. probably not.
Tex is funny....

To fremonter,
I disagree with you in that I feel things will get BETTER economically nation wide regardless of who wins next month. While I agree times are tough the fact that MR Buffett is buying rather then selling means he sees long term positives instead of the doom & gloom the media is portraying evry day.
As for Fremont, its not the president's job to bring high paying quality jobs to Fremont, that is the duty of the Mayor, City Council and anyone they delegate to help that aspect of economic growth. So when the nation's economy comesback in the next year or two, for Fremont to grow with it the local leaders need to do their part as well.
To Tex, my dislike of the D' political party is one of philosphy, not the private lives of the individual politicians in the party. Both parties have corrupt people in them. As for Bill Ayers, Obama may have been 8 when the crimes were commited, but Bill should have been in prison for life like Terry Nickols (Oklahoma city bomber partner to Tim Mckveigh) as with ANYONE who commmits terroist activities in the US. regardless of their motive. Wether its 60s radical groups or an abortion bomber from more modern times. Obama should not have even associated with Bill the moment he became aware of his past. Funny thing the abortion clinic bomber that also bombed the Olympic Village in 96 got life in prison, (which he should have) but many of the 60s radical bombers were made into college professers like Bill Ayers. Go figure, LOL! Anyway to Tex & fremonter & anyone else have a good week end.

Sassy grandma you hit the nail on the head, as many of the rest of you did! Most of the issues we are dealing with today were caused by actions of the administration before President Bush. Get the facts straight before you blame the wrong people. Google "bank deregulation" and see where it leads you. <-- I have been saying this forever, Im so glad someone else has the sense to see it too.

As far as the article goes I think it was wonderful. It was a great speech and its too bad it didnt come from McCain, but I believe alot of what was said in the article has been said by McCain just not all at once or in the same way.

I also have to agree, people complain about fox news but cnn and msnbc are extremely liberal, you know there is a bias there, you can see it.
Tex
Oct 12, 2008 1:29 AM
I believe most media is biased, however, don't look at just one source, I read newspapers, check internet and lastly watch tv. A lot of what CNN had was very basic info but I did also research that a bit. Looks like McCain is up there with Edwards on the slime scale. Cheating on the wife who is standing by him while she is suffering the whole while. As for Ayers, the question is not really whether he should be in prison, the question is did Obama do anything wrong by associating with him. Looks like Obama was only associating with him in responsible ways, not in any kind of terroristic ways. The 60's were a wild time and anyone who remembers them may remember that a lot of things were radical on both sides. I'm not saying Ayers shouldn't have been jailed, I'm saying that he may not be the person he was 40 years ago as far as decisions he made then. But beyond that, Obama is the question here not Ayers. I don't see that he is guilty of any terroristic activity at all and just because he served on a board with him does not make him a terrorist sympathizer, he wasn't serving on the Weathermen. I know a lot of people and I imagine most of you do to that have ideas or have done things you would not condone.

Watch Foxnews tonight with Sean Hannity and see the real Obama! Sorry but he has the most liberal voting record and all this other stuff makes me not trust him. Let alone I don't agree with Government run Health Care for everyone, it's bad enough they control Welfare, food stamps and pay unemployment checks. Don't get me wrong I think there is a need for Health Care assistance. Maybe Regulations on Insurance companies and hospital charges would be better! And I also believe there are people out there that need the assistance of Welfare and etc. but I also know that there are people out there that could be working and aren't....and woman who have 4 kids who won't marry there boyfriends cause they would loose all the government assistance....let alone if they couldn't afford to have the first or the second child they shouldn't be having more children ...the government should have stepped in and given them Birth Control and Worker Education Program and said here get a Good Job and get off Welfare, food stamps etc...and if you get pregnant before your off all these things or don't complete the worker program...then everything will be cut off....I know...I know ....it sounds extreme....but we have become a country where people think they don't have to work to get what they want....cause if you wait long enough and fill out enough forms....government will provide for you!! GRRRRRR!!!!

Aww Brian, have been looking for you to post my 5 good things that Republicans have done. Been busy but here it is:
(I know, you think I forgot you)
1. Lincoln leading during the Civil War, emancipation of slaves.
2. Teddy Roosevelt and his acts towards conservation.
3. George W. directing monies towards AIDS in Africa.
4. Reagan putting an end to the Cold War (yes, some debate that, but I think the arms race put the nail in Communism's coffin).
5. Eisenhower -- interstate system and genuine war hero, among other accomplishments
Awaiting your next 5 :-)

Momma,
thank you for your list of five thingsthe r's have done right. Yes i did think you forgot or chose not to reply. Anyway here are 5 more things the D's have done right.
1. Jimmy carter negotiated a big peace treaty between Egypt & Israle in the 1978 or 79 Camp david accords.
2. JfK tax cuts in his time in office. At the time the biggest tax cut in history. It led to Econimic growth until LBJ got us into the Viet nam war.
3. Rev. Jessie Jackson. Yes he may be a race pimp today, but in 1983 he traveled with permission by the state department to negotiate with Syria for the release of a navy pilot shot down and captured during a late 1983 air raid by our carrier pilots over various targets supporting terroist activities in Syria. Two planes were shot down. 1 pilot killed & the other captured.
4. Under LBJ's term from 1964 to 1968 many civil rights for African Americans were either gained or the seeds were planted for future gains.
5. Truman at the end of WWII as American's rises to a world power, put his complete support to the birth of the United Nations. At the time it was a good thing. However I feel today the UN has a large anti-American bias and it was there long before W Bush became president. Anyway Momma, there is my final 5. Now looking forward to your list. have a good day & stay dry.

Although I think Obama will be the worst decision American’s could make, there might be an upside, we would get a Republic congress back. Clinton gets so much praise for being a great president, when the truth is we had a Republican congress. Then Bush is getting a bad rep….and now we have a Democrat congress….do you see a pattern?
a thought
Oct 13, 2008 4:45 PM
Not sure if this will sound correct but give it a chance...Not one person or side has all the answers but each side makes up how we all live. Bush had 8 years to make a difference while the first 4 were rocky we can blame that on Clinton and that congress, but the last 4 years have gone down hill quite fast. How can we blame everything on clinton and that congress. Doesn't Bush and both the R's & D's congress have to take this blame. Anyways in the end it doesn't matter who caused it as we can't change the past but if we learn as americans how to prevent this from happening again. If the politians wouldn't think americans are dumb and vote the way we want, we possibly would not be in this situation. Also, if they could make lobbing illegal our country wouldn't be hurting as some vote yes/no even though they do/don't believe in the bill. All of these are just an idea. I don't think Obama will end our country nor do I think that McCain is going to do a bad job. Our country is going to flow with or with out each of these men around.
whatever
Oct 13, 2008 10:18 PM
Lynn, do you not remember that we had a republican congress the first 6 years of the Bush administration? The Democrats have only been in control for the last 1.5 yrs. This mess with the mortgage crisis has been brewing for the last 4-5 yrs.
Both sides are to blame for this, the deregulation was done during Clinton years, but the R congress did nothing to change it 3 yrs ago when it started falling apart. The D's have been sitting on their hands and not doing anything for the last 1.5 yrs they have been in control. If you are going to point fingers make sure you are pointing at ALL the people to blame, including those who took out mortgages that they could not afford!

TO SASSY MOM:

You said the government needs to step in and give birth control to people so they quit having kids and will get off welfare.

Do you not realize that the BUSH ADMINISTRATION is a ABSTINENCE ONLY admin? So, why would they provide birth control? If you ask REPUBLICANS, nobody is having sex. Just ask Sarah Palin how well abstinence only education works.

Recently (within the past 3 months), the BUSH admin tried to ban birth control saying it was a form of abortion

The BUSH admin do not want educators to teach about safe sex and/or GASP! birth control! Heaven forbid! Catholics do not believe in birth control either, although I know a lot of catholics who get prescribed birth control for "period control" haha!!!

There are clinics that will provide birth control on a sliding scale fee, however, the BUSH admin has cut these clinics funding so dramatically that these clinics are now open less hours and have had to raise the rates on birth control--this is nation wide.

I 100% agree that people should quit having kids and use birth control. However, we need to teach our kids about sex and birth control and inform them where these clinics are.

Abstinence only education isn't working. If your only message to your children is "don't do it" you are giving your kids a dis-service.

Contact your school board and allow teachers to teach about COMPREHENSIVE sex ed. That includes the abstinence only message that says abstinence is the only 100% way you will not have a unwanted pregnancy or STD but also teach about safe sex and how NOT to get pregnant.

Right here in Fremont is a clinic that offers reproductive health and birth control---all on a sliding scale fee--Northeast NE Family Health Services. For those of you that can't afford another baby, please contact them for your birth control needs.

To sassy educator,
1. The issue about birth controll & the Bush adminstration is a moot point b/c this is an article about McCain/Obama election. Bush is gone no mater what happens next month.
2. Congress determines the budget & spending and the D's are in control now. So if birth controll money is what you desire then its the Ds who have let you down the past 2 years.
3. wether you believe in the abstinece only policy or birth controll education side of the issue, its the PARENTS ultimate responsibility for the "birds & the bees" speech. NOT some politician from D.C. have a good day.
Sassy Educator
Oct 14, 2008 9:01 AM
Brian,
If the parents are the only ones who should teach sex ed as you point out, then why do we (USA) have the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the westernized world? NE is in the top 10 for highest teen preg rates.

I understand this article was about McCain. However, another reader said we need birth control. Just wanted to point out that most R's are against sex ed/birth control education.

Have a great day!
Brian
Oct 14, 2008 12:39 PM
to sassy educator,
There are several reasons that the teen pregnancy rate is so high nation wide or Nebraska compared to other nations.
Some paernts are not as responsible as they could be. Some teenagers who are taught by their parents about birds & the bees simply choose peer pressure or being a rebel ignore their parents. In one example in the 80's a freind of mine dated a teenager who got mad at her parents for grounding her from a concert so she decided to get back at her parents mad by deliberatly getting pregnant. The friend did not want to be a dad at 17 so he broke up with her and she found another sperm donar. In another case, i know of at least two women who got pregnant from guys lying about being sterile to avoid using condoms. Which surprised me it happend twice, b/c the two teens were best freinds and the pregnancies were NOT at the same time. You would think if it happend once both teens would learn not to trust the guys with remarks like that.
This issue is just an example of the differences between the D's & the R's at the core. D's belive that people in general are not capable of taking care of themselves and we all need BIG Government to take care of us. And with it Government CONTROLL. The R's belive in slightly more personal freedom (however they have moved to the left since Regan which I am not thrilled. they have just moved less to the left as the D' party.)and with it personal responsibility. This philosophy spills over into health care, economics, ect, but it all comes down to the same core beliefs.
As for the Bush cutting budgets for these clinics. Keep in mind some logic. If a woman is so poor as to need these clinics, she is already eligible for government aid such as food stamps, medicare/aid, housing expenses, ect. So she can get birth controll info or products from her dr. So these clincs are redundant and its like government spending for same thing twice. Have a good day.

This whole thing has gotton crazy. I wrote a letter to the Tribune recently in support of Obama. I received a bunch of anonymous internet clippings from someone with no guts to even identify themselves about Obama being from Kenya...blah, blah, blah. The person who sent it was apparently a moron because they sent it to someone that has the same last name as me but is a very distanct relative, who I am sure did not appreciate the threatening tone of it. Hey if you want to intimidate someone at least have the guts to sign your name.

On behalf of those who have different philisophical opinions of Obama & the D' ideas in general I apologise about those who sent you or your realative threatening e-mails. I do not condone crossing lines from debating issues to threats. Thats why I am glad internet addresses are not posted.
I am surprised you or your relative were threatened as one would have to have internet addresses to send someone e-mails let alone threats.Anyway have a good day.

Thanks, It was a regular letter so according to Tribune rules I HAD to give my first and last name, hence some idiot, looked in a phone book and picked the wrong Siebler. Yeah, we have free speech in this country so no one should be trying to intimidate someone because they disagree. For the record I was not one bit intimidated so to the person that sent that..let me tell you my immediate response besides laughing at how stupid the internet clippings were and outrage that they sent this to an innocent person initially...I got online and made calls for Obama and then sent him a donation so there ya go. I guess it didn't work to try to intimidate someone as stubborn as me. But yeah, no matter what someones beliefs on politics they have a right to it.

God look at these dumb post on here. You could think wow these people really care... but also one could think these guys need a reality check. Obama and J.M. are BOTH CROOKS. I dont need to give examples its just a known fact. The two party system we have here has done a great job of nominating two Crooks... and has left out good people such as Huckabee out. The democrat party could of atleast given us Hilary... she might be a crook also.. but atleast we can trust her. So again... quit sounding so one sided on these post.. they are Both Crooks
