Leslie L. Oerman, 80, of Herman died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue.
He was born May 19, 1928, in rural Herman to Lawrence and Matilda (Benjes) Oerman. He lived his life on the family farm where he was born. He graduated from Hooper High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from Feb. 9, 1951, to Dec. 19, 1952, with Company B 116th Engineer Combat Battalion and was wounded on Heart Break Ridge. He farmed and for a time did custom corn shelling. He then drove truck for Farris Transfer, Peterson Transfer and retired in 1989 from Trans Con Lines. After retiring from trucking he held Team Penning for 10 years at Christensen Field in Fremont, and was active in thoroughbred horse racing.
He married Pearl Thomsen on Nov. 12, 1950, in Arlington.
He was a member of Saddle Clubs at Tekamah, Dodge and Arlington, and a member of the Nebraska Thoroughbred Racing Association. He also was a member of the Teamsters Union at Omaha and Immanuel Lutheran Church at rural Hooper. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8332 and American Legion Post 71, both of Arlington.
Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Leslie Oerman Jr. (and wife, JoNel) and Lonny Oerman, all of Herman; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, a brother and a grandson.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Hooper with the Rev. Rodney Meske officiating. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Sunday at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington with family receiving friends from 3-5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Monday at the church. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Hooper with military graveside services conducted by members of VFW Post 8332 and American Legion Post 71 of Arlington.
A memorial has been established to the Alzheimer’s Association.
