SCRIBNER - Fremont Bergan shut down the powerful Scribner-Snyder rushing attack while racking up the rushing yards of their own for a 14-0 win Friday night.
Bergan rushed for 218 yards while holding the run-heavy Trojans to just 113 yards on the ground.
"We absolutely needed our rush defense tonight," Bergan head coach Ron Beacom said. "I probably don’t comment enough on what my assistants do; coach (T.J.) Folkers and coach (Chris) Paulson do all the defensive stuff and they did a terrific job and had a great plan. Coach (Jim) Jones does the defensive line and I thought they had a big game for us tonight."
Scribner-Snyder head coach Fred Ivey said he had to patch up the offensive line leading up to the game.
Ivey said two players started Friday night on the offensive line with no varsity experience. One starter recently quit the team and another is out and will have knee surgery.
"We had some missed blocks, but we were pretty young out there tonight," Ivey said. "Bergan has some good kids, too, there’s no getting around that."
Heavy pressure from the Knights’ defense set up the game’s first score.
David Miles covered up a Trojan fumble after pressure from the Knights caused a bad exchange on the Scribner-Snyder 12-yard line.
Sophomore quarterback Riley Gross scampered 11 yards to set up a Nick Lambrecht 1-yard plunge two plays later to put Bergan up 7-0 with 5:25 to go in the first quarter.
"They don’t get a turnover and a score and it looks different," Ivey said. "But when I lose I don’t get the opportunity to say ‘if we hadn’t fumbled the ball this would’ve happened,’ it doesn’t work that way - you’ve got to make things happen."
Bergan added its second score early in the second quarter.
Gross took off on an option to the left side and darted 30 yards up the middle of the field to put the Knights on top 14-0 just a minute and a half into the second quarter.
Gross gained 95 yards rushing to lead the Knights’ ground attack. Tanner Classen added 62 yards on 10 carries.
"They left the middle open so I was able to find some cut-back lanes," Gross said. "We did a great job of executing tonight."
Bergan had a few more opportunities to put points on the scoreboard in the game.
The Knights drove to the S-S 18 but the Trojans’ Cameron Fletcher made a fine stop on a 4th-and-4 play.
Near the end of the first quarter Bergan drove 70 yards before Ethan Beck intercepted a pass in the end zone.
The Trojans turned back two Bergan 4th-down plays on their own 30-yard line in the third quarter. They also escaped a would-be Bergan blocked punt in the third. Trojan punter Paul Schlecht alertly tucked the ball and ran with pressure looming and the right-footed kicker made an athletic left-footed punt on the run to avoid a negative play.
On the ensuing drive, Bergan fumbled on the S-S 3 early in the fourth quarter.
Bergan fumbled three times and threw three interceptions on the night while the Trojans fumbled twice and threw one pick.
Gross also passed for 92 yards and added 16 yards receiving to give him a total of 203 of the Knights’ 327 total yards. All of Gross’ passing yards came in the first half as Bergan ran 22 running plays and just five passing plays in the second half.
"It was things we saw and it was because we were up by two touchdowns," Beacom said. "Also my offensive linemen told me at halftime that there were certain things that they wanted to do and one of them was that they wanted us to run our zone plays more so that’s what we did."
Taylor Stockamp gained 96 of the Trojans’ 113 yards rushing on 22 carries. Evan Muller completed five passes for 32 yards.
"I think our kids came ready to play and they hit; I thought we lined up against them well." Ivey said. "We do some good things; we just don’t do enough of them enough of the time."
