There will be a celebration Friday for the TeamMates mentoring program.

The annual One-Hour Walk will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Linden Elementary School.

Nan Cunningham, coordinator of TeamMates for Fremont Public Schools, said along with the walk -- which symbolizes the hour mentors spend each week in the schools with the youth -- there will be games and food. Students from Jim Rosenbach’s Warrior Training Branches will give a presentation at 4:30 p.m.

“We want people to come out and celebrate the program,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham said there were 130 matches in the program this year in Fremont. Participating schools included Clarmar, Grant, Howard, Linden, Milliken Park and Washington elementary schools, Fremont High School, Fremont Middle School and Fremont Learning Center.

“It’s such a fun program because the mentors enjoy the children and vice versa,” Cunningham said. “A nice relationship really forms throughout the year.”

The event is open to mentors and students, as well as their family and friends.

Some of the mentors have been matched with the same students for several years, Cunningham said, and have had the chance to interact with the students’ families.

“Normally they don’t, so it is a nice time for people to get acquainted,” Cunningham said.

Anyone who would like more information on the program can call Cunningham at 727-3100 or visit www.teammates.org.

Cunningham said there is a Master Singers concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 2 at Midland Lutheran College, and a portion of the proceeds from the event will go to the TeamMates program.

How is a one-hour walk held from 3:30-5:30? My math isn't the greatest, but that's two hours...

Apparently you missed the part of the story that talks about Rosenbach Warrior Training Branch doing a presentation at 4:30 p.m. and that there also will be games and food. Maybe that's why TeamMates called it a celebration, part of which will be the One Hour Walk.
