Barbara A. Rohwer, 55, of Fremont passed away peacefully at her home on July 1, 2009.
Barbara Rohwer was born Aug. 10, 1953, in York to Eilert and Margaret (Glock) Fricke. She was baptized on Sept. 6, 1953, and confirmed on March 19, 1967, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rising City. Barbara received her eighth grade diploma from Immanuel Lutheran Parochial School. She graduated from David City High School in 1971 and received her bachelor’s degree from Midland Lutheran College in 1975 with both elementary and special education teaching endorsements.
Barbara began her teaching career in 1975 as a fourth-grade teacher at Grant Elementary School in Fremont. She left that position in December 1979. She worked as an elementary substitute teacher in Nebraska City for 13 years. She served as a tour guide for the Arbor Day Farm and the Arbor Day Foundation.
During her lifetime, Barbara served as a Sunday school teacher, a Catechism teacher, a vacation Bible school teacher, she sang in the church choir, she played the piano for the church choir and served on numerous church committees. Barbara served as a Teammate to a student in Nebraska City for several years. Barbara had been an active member of both Phi Delta Kappa Teacher’s Sorority and PEO.
She married Keith Rohwer on Dec. 20, 1975, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rising City.
Barbara is survived by: her husband, Keith of Fremont; her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughters, Andrew, Karen, Sydney and Chloe of Kearney; her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Peter Stout of Kearney; her parents, Eilert and Margaret Fricke of Ulysses; her sister, Patricia Wilcox of Springfield; her brother and sister-in-law, Jan and Lori Fricke of Ulysses; her sister and brother-in-law, Marla Fricke and Robert Ottaviano of Kansas City; two nieces; three nephews; and five great-nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Martha Rohwer in 1993; her father-in-law, Arnold Rohwer in 1999; her brother-in-law, Ken Rohwer in 2003; her sister-in-law, Lila Rohwer in 2003; and her nephew, Aaron Wilcox in 2008.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fremont. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday at the church with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
