Dr. Jack’s yellow isn’t so popular

For Dr. Jack’s Ink Emporium, it was business as usual when it came to picking a color for its new location in Fremont.

But some residents aren’t happy about the bright color of the building at Military Avenue and Main Street.

“Our buildings are going to be yellow,” Dr. Jack’s president Derek Wallen said earlier this week in a telephone interview.

“Yellow is just a popular color for advertising,” he added.

Dr. Jack’s has five locations and two of the other buildings -- in Bellevue and Millard -- are painted the same shade of yellow as the new Fremont location. All have signs that are yellow with black letters.

Wallen said he is in no hurry to move from his

current First Street

location, but decided to paint the building early to attract attention. The new building is about the same size as the current location, but he said it is a more visible location.

It’s the visibility that has attracted attention, as Bob Missel, chairman of Fremont’s Downtown Improvement District, knows all to well.

“I have had calls from both business owners and residents,” Missel said. “A lot of the concerns ... is it’s so out of place in the (downtown) district.”

But Missel and City Planner Jeff Ray both say there are no regulations that prevent Wallen from painting the business yellow.

“At this point in time there isn’t much we can do about it,” Missel said.

Missel, who also is a downtown business owner, said the DID has discussed design standards in the past and MainStreet of Fremont does have some voluntary guidelines.

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” Missel added. “But the general response has been negative.”

There is better things to worry about! At least it will catch the driver going by that isnt from the area and make there eye look south and see that there is also a neat downtown in Fremont. It will help cars turn south off of Military.

Get over it people of Fremont its no big deal. People really should worry more about things that actually effect their lives. Dont be so small minded things are not meant to stay the same forever. If you really have nothing better to do than worry about the color of a building than I really feel sorry for you. Get a life! Dont be so judgemental. OUT WITH THE OLD IN WITH THE NEW!!!!!!!!

at least its a business and not an empty building. so its an odd ball color at least it is tax revenue for the city and i like it. it brightens up the dinginess of down town. i wish more business would use brighter colors it might change the sour attitude of some of the people who live in this town.

The only reason people are complaining is because a lot Fremonters are so old fashioned and not with the times. They still think tattooing is taboo. Who cares what color the building is? As long as it is maintained and doesn't look like dump, I say buzz off!

There was outrage when Craig Corn painted Nifty 50"s yellow too. Bottom line is: great service, great food.

I don't have tattoo's but im sure the same can be said about your business: great color, great tats!

GOOD LUck!

Two things:

1) You mention eyesore paintjobs? Try a certain 50's-era restaurant a little further east from Dr. Jack's on Military Ave. Yeah, right across from Memorial Stadium...what an embarrassment to Fremont!!! How about the excessive amount of businesses that are not maintained, like a little junk car shop near a certain railroad crossing? It’s disgusting, and I’m ashamed to drive by it everyday. Bright yellow paint is fresh and new, compared to these ATROCIUS aforementioned eyesores.

2) Our downtown has more things to worry about than yellow paint. A bright yellow paint job is "out of place" amidst all that is our downtown, so you say, Bob? Alright, let’s spin that one a bit. Our downtown consists of the following: bars aplenty, too many junk shops to count, a laundry list of failed businesses, a handful of long-standing businesses who will eventually be putting "going out of business SALE" signs in their shops, and vacant buildings, namely an empty 505 building...I think we've got better things to worry about than yellow paint.

It was really a bad call on the area to put that color. One thing is we are trying to make the downtown more attractive and inviting. Why cover up that beautiful brick? Why could they have done some kind of sign with their "accent" color? Kollmeyer's did a wonderful job in the color. Not tacky for the area. Nifty 50's did a classy job also. There really needed to have some kinda covenant in place.

FOR PETES SAKE PEOPLE! WHY COMPLAIN ABOUT A COLOR OF A BUILDING. WOULD IT LOOK SO MUCH BETTER EMPTY AND RUN DOWN.
WE NEED TO WAKE UP AND COME INTO THE MODERN WORLD. MAYBE WE NEED ALOT OF THE OTHER BUILDINGS IN TOWN PAINTED POLKA DOT, STRIPED OR ANYTHING AS LONG AS THEY ARE OCCUPIED AND UP FOR BUSINESS. JUST LIGHTEN UP!

It's not just old people who HATE it! Wasn't that painted just before JFC days? Come on!

Advertising your business at the expense of 25,000 Fremonters. Thats a heck of a way to market your business and for that reason I'd go somewhere else.

I will not support a business who makes my hometown less beautiful.

Maybe Fremonters should use their most effective vote, the American dollar, to decide what color that building is. Yeah I said it.

The bright yellow color was painted to draw attention, and that is just what it did!! Guess we will just have to live with it like the soccer leagues in Millikan Park every Sunday. They start at 8:30am and go until 5:30pm. I thought Christensen Field was for these things??!! Cars are parked on both sides of Wyoming street from Nelson Lane to Jones street. This means that usually only one car can pass through at a time. Also, after the games are over there is still plenty of trash to clean up. Especially plastic water bottle caps! We would like our peaceful Sundays back. We thought this was a residential neighborhood when we moved in. According to the parks department this was just a temporary thing, but it just keeps going on. Last year and this year..The parks department said the leagues have to pay to use Christensen Field. HMMMMMM...... Anyway, no one seems to be able to get a straight answer about all this. They just want to bicker over who represents Ward 2( Millikan Park area) after Mary Marsh resigned. I guess that's just par for the course in politics. Like my title said, SAME OLD THING!!! And by the way, I think Dr. Jack's Bright yellow color is an ugly eyesore. I am very open minded, but that is just plain "icky"

Maybe they should have painted it black & gold. At least then they could say to the naysayers that they're supportive of FHS.

Get over it, it's a color and serves as a beacon for all the blue hairs reminding them of what exact street they are on.

I thought it looked kinda cool might attract some more young people to the downtown area. Who knows. Its just paint. Fremont could use more color it could use more fun.

OLDMAN

I am 46 and have no "tats". My kids think I am old fashion and they are right but here is my take on this issue.

This business has been on 1st Street for some time with no problems. I would bet that it has and will continue to bring in more business than others in the downtown district. We should work with this business like we do all others to generate taxable income for our community.

Good Luck and continued success Dr. Jacks

There are actually communities across the USA that have restrictions about the appearance of their downtown buildings, the owners must adhere to remodeling and/or colors that leave the area most pleasing to the shoppers. Approval must be given by a group before work starts, something that should have been in effect here. We are not downtown El Paso (yet).

I love it how all you uptight bigots get upset about this. The best part is that Dr. Jack's will probably get more business than any of the other businesses downtown that are complaining about this. I think it's great how people try to brown-nose in this town and make themselves feel "important." It's like a comedy show to me. So many losers and people who would be no where if it wasn't for their daddies. That's how Fremont works. 1. Grandpa starts a business way back when 2. Incompetent son takes over. 3. Incompetent grandson takes over. 4. You know what happens next. Yet these morans are the ones why skippy will go to for advice and who are on all the boards around here. Just because you have "family" money doesn't mean you're smart. Why not put a self-made person on these boards who can think for themselves? Well, this town's elite is scared of people why can think for themselves and who won't join the "puppet show." They want people why will act the same as they do. People who will cry about the color of a building.

I can't believe how tacky that looks. I agree that Nifty 50's is just as yellow. But, it is not as bad as DR Jacks. It looks like a 12 year old painted it with a toothbrush. Nifty 50's is neatly done with some nice trim.
It does not go well with downtown businesses. Maybe they will upgrade it and put some trim on it.
Sad to see that mess, on Main Street.
Wheres the petition drive

Seriously? This is one of the most stories? Okay, subtract the one complaining about the Brown people playing soccer but it still is up there.

I have been all around the United States and I have seen nicer areas than the Dump of a Downtown that have brightly colored buildings. Check out Charleston S.C. for an example. Blue Hairs and Junk Shop Owners, you really only care because it is a tattoo shop.

Craig Corn turned his little Dump Bright Vomit and no one complains, Because it is a "Landmark".

There are properties all over this little berg which are falling apart, have trash in the yard, paint peeling, furniture on the porch, cars on blocks, weeds everywhere, etc. No one Does anything because the Slumlords are part of the Blue Hair Mafia. Many of these places should be set aflame and used for fire training, yet no one says or does anything. The hypocrisy in this little hicktown is unbelievable.

This Tattoo parlor is at least paying taxes and preventing yet another building from becoming a junk shop or an eyesore. If we are going to define things and pass ordinances, we should start by defining ANTIQUE. that would put about 2/3 of the Downtown out of business.

Before you start complaining about every little thing, maybe you should think about whether you really need to be devoting your time and limited vocabularies to this and similar posts.

I wonder if anyone remembers the movie Pleasentville? I think every whinner in Fremont should rent this movie. Change happens. You can't stop it. It keeps going and going. I don't live in this town but I do know one thing, lets worry about the drugs and crime and complain about that. A yellow building is not worth the whinning, the talk of how tacky it is, and what the business is. Be happy there are businesses in YOUR town. People ARE going to work in YOUR town. Taxes ARE paid and services are up and running. I'm out of work. 3 months behind in paying bills, and my husband is going to be losing his job in November. We may be losing our house and insurance. To me, I'm more worried about this than a building painted yellow.

I grew up in Fremont and visit often. I drove by this and "HOLY CRAP" it is the most hidious thing. I can't beleive that one would do this. Sure it makes it stand out and good for advertising but WOW. I have multiple tattoos and I am sure they do a good job. just ruins the historical aspect.

BARS 2. FAST FOOD 3. EMPTY BUILDINGS 4. OLD FOLKS HOMES. good going fremont. this will really make fremont a place where people will move to to raise their families. A TATTOO SHOP?

Well in my opinion the down town area did not need this yellow building at all. It looks trashy this is not how you promote a buisnes this is awful. thier 1st street building is not yellow so why do it on a main street. If i was thinking on moving here i would think twice before i did.

Yellow is the color of caution, which seems apropriate considering all their tatoos are flash work. So theres always that chance you will have the EXACT SAME tatoo as some one else in town.

I prefer to spend a bit more and get a nice custom piece.

Besides, there are plenty of buildings down town in horrible shape. So this yellow building fits right in with the rest of the embarasments in this town.

i can't stop laughing! reading these comments shows exactly what's wrong with fremont. Mr. Wallen- run with it! i wish you all the luck in the world. to stay in business in fremont, is a feat in itself, but to do it against these hypocritical, know-it-all, close minded hicks, is AMAZING!! it is a tattoo parlor. colors, creativity and individuality is part of the trade. and exactly what are the "downtown assoc" looking for? are you looking for an abandoned back lot of a movie set? congratulations!! you've already achieved that goal. i suggest you embrace every business you can get in that ghost town.

Oh am I glad I left that town a long time ago. I still keep up with what's going on because I have family there, and I didn't move far away. But this is why the town of Fremont seems so old and stagnant. Let the same "old money" people run the boring old show as usual and complain about anything that differs from their opinion. I don't miss that place a bit. And, I do think it is simply because it is a tatoo parlor...Fremont could be so much more than it is because of things just like this. I'll go to Omaha for things, Fremont doesn't deserve my money.
GO for it

I have never laughed so hard as to these postings!
This business owner spent more money painting his building than many of the downtown merchants haveever spent on theirs.
Downtown is just anexample of failed junk shops wanting taxpayers to pay their way!
Downtown is almost dead. Don't put it on life support with tax dollars. Even though they have a direct line to the city adminstrator!
I say this business has every right to improve the building any way they want. And, if the blue hairs moan too much - paint an eye chart on the building for them too!

WOW! it is like no one has ever seen the color yellow before! It is everywhere from clothes to shoes to cars. What is the big deal he is doing nothing wrong and the ones that are actually doing something wrong goes unnoticed.....see a problem with this. Face it it is a tattoo parlor and people still have not conformed to that fact nor did they when I was growing up there they frowned on the underground and (for lack of words)"head shops" they hated them too. Pay these hipocrites no mind, because change is not something Fremont is fond of........go for it and make it the best ever and I promise they will eat their words stick to your guns and run with it and everyone enjoy the services he offers and respect the fact that he even wanted to open a business there..be happy for that and let him be!
To Scoop
Aug 15, 2009 3:28 PM
I love the idea Scoop! I would rather be known for that then the "historical" downtown. If we could just get people and other business to paint their buildings bright pink, yellow, purple and glowing green, all along Military ave. I would much rather be known for that then the downtown. We could always make sure to charge a toll fee on both ends of Military to ensure Fremont gets what it feels it "deserves"

Reguardless of if the yellow is tacky or not, it will draw in customers and that is the whole goal. If yellow is what it takes in this day and age, then so be it.

Congrats on your new location-Yellow or not

For those of you who complain over something so stupid, why? Seriously, it's just a color! It's going to be bringing in a lot of business. There are more things to worry about, then a color of a building. Especially downtown. Nifty Fifty's has a yellow building. So what. It attracts a lot of business. The bright color definitely gets attention. It draws attention to downtown not detract from it. It's like a big welcome to downtown.. Come see what there is here to offer!
It was a plain building to start with. It had no architectural working to draw attention to. I think whatever gets peoples attention to downtown is good thing. I'm glad Dr Jack's stayed in the downtown district instead of going to a mall on the edge of town.

I find this all so interesting. Where were all of you when the city council refused to give our police and other unions pay raises and wanted to increase their health insurance premiums? I will have you know that the FPD serves this community extremely well and they have agreed not to take pay raises this year! Maybe we should be concerned with the actual important things in life that could truly effect us on a daily aspect. Fremont was just named as one of the top places to live and raise children well then maybe we should make sure they remain out of harms way.

Change is all around you all the time. A community that is unable to allow positive changes is a community that will never advance and will parish eventually. Its 2009 not 1929. Stop worrying about other people decisions, and be greatful that their are still people willing to think outside the box with a positive attitude. Stop being jealous that you do not have the nerve to take a step forward. Stop taking life so seriously.

A buildings aesthetic qualities are subjective. Yeah so you hate the color, the important thing is that its providing a clean environment for YOUR community to get tattoos. like em are not people will get them, for the safety of your community isnt a yellow building better than getting a tattoo in a basement or kitchen.

YELLOW??? I saw it and got sick. It isn't that it is tacky (which it is), but that Fremont should have other policy's such as paint color set for down town business. How would you like to be the business right next door?? I feel sorry for the Eagles. A little bit of taste would be nice. Did they even ask their neighbors if that was ok??? How would you like it if you were trying to sell your $200,000 home and right next to you was a YELLOW house. Get real!! It is bad and they should paint it another color.

Aug 16, 2009 7:19 PM
Honestly...When you look around Fremont you see junky vehicles (blown out windows)parked in front of homes, grassy-weedy yards that you could graze cattle in, broken down porches with couches/chairs/appliances, etc. And, what about those FISH? Moby Dick is in yards and placed on city property (directly in front of businesses). Does the city "scale" the fish...they approve and let them sit here and there. After all, if the city can support fish, why not support a building painted "yellow". If you drive further North...you will see Pelican's that adorn another small community. Stop thinking "small" and support your community and be glad somebody wants to support your taxes and isn't looking for food stamps and any other hand out. Residents of Fremont...get on with your life!
Senior Cornhusker Fan
Aug 16, 2009 7:46 PM
OK, you like the Cornhusker's right? Why not think of the "yellow" building as a storage bin for corn; after all we are Nebraskan's and we have all sorts of symbols representing corn during all during the year. Shucks, it just seems to me that Fremont residents can't think out of the box. You need to move on and focus on the bigger things in life and clean up your own backyard.

If, you have so much time on your hands writing silly articles and your nose is clean, maybe volunteer at the local nursing home. The elderly have seen and been through a lot more headaches than "yellow buildings". Example: Dust Bowl, Depression, supporting their family without a credit card and did without social security benefits for years. They also lived on family values and did it without electronic-toys. I resent seeing seniors being referred as a "blue hair". They are older, wiser, smarter and can spell and write better than most of you on this blog.

Move on with your lives or move out of Fremont and stop being hypocrite's.

OK, plenty of comments so I might as well throw one in too.
I am one for historical restoration. I'm glad that the Opera House is being restored and the historical look of the courthouse was maintained during that renovation.
I thought it was a shame to tear down the pretty building that was the 'Spence Shoppe' and turned it into Care Corps.
I wish Lou's Sporting Goods and a couple other places would remove that metal siding and restore the brick underneath, in fact, I would love to grind down the pavement in the whole downtown to expose the brick...but I digress..
I think the yellow is obnoxious because the area is historical. (as far as I know, Nifty 50's only used to be KFC, not exactly a landmark!). But if they own the building and there are no covenant type restrictions, not much can be done, can it?

Hi all. I live in Fremont. We have 5 stores. Our Fremont store has been very profitable for the families that operate it. The store has brought in business from all over not just here. Paul Lee (manager) has done an outstanding job in our store and has been able to provide very well for his wife and kids for that I want to thank you. We have been able to put together enough to purchase a building in downtown Fremont instead of rent a spot from the Gitt's. As for the building in question...Have you seen that building before we got a hold of it? Cracked bricks and rust running down the side of an abandoned building that was shot on the inside. Hardly an improvement to a dying downtown. As far as being historic..that was built in the late sixties get the facts. It used to be a Mexican restaurant (should have seen the nastiness inside) before that at some time it was a hair solon. Does either of those fit your bill? What about the Runza right next door (yellow and Green) boy that’s historic LOL. As suspension Don stated we are not done with this building yet so hold your comments and see what happens then you can come in and say them to my face. There is a lot of kitchen scratching (tattooing) going on in this town and the residents of Fremont deserve better. We are licensed by the state and have passed with 100% on our inspections. You should come and visit and then voice your opinions we would love to hear from you. Yellow is our corporate color just like Bag-n-Save, Runza, No Frills and McDonalds. I think the fact that we are a tattoo shop is what is really the issue here. There are 19 shops in Omaha and 11 or so in Lincoln and I believe that there are even a few in Columbus so why not in Fremont? Please don’t tell me that I live in a community that frowns upon making an honest living for my family. One that’s pays his taxes. My son goes to Bergan but yet I still pay good money to the public school system. You know I have met nothing but opposition from the Fremont city officials since I have been here. Do you know that I paid rent for six month before I could open the shop on First Street? I would like to thank Marv for that. Thank you Marv. The building was always going to be yellow just not while we were not in it. We decided to paint it yellow early for two reasons; one reason is the way my son and I were treated as we talked with the city clerk (Kim) about a parking ticket issued when we were trying to work on the building. What a dandy she is. The other reason is for the free press thank you.

May the sun shine on your faces forever.
Blue skies.

Why didn't anyone complain when Sally Manka painted her building purple, pepto bismo pink and yellow? Now that was an eyesore. Is it because Dr Jack's is a tattoo joint? We have some very narrow minded people in this town who think that we should all be cookie cutter clones of one another. Looke at housing developments with 6 home styles and covenants telling people how to live. I for one would rather look at a yellow building than another lookalike building. and as for the historical aspect of downtown. There are 3 strip malls and many newer building that are not historically correct. Give the man a break, at least he is bringing in revenue for downtown. Better than another empty building, antique store or mexican hangout. Quit trying to push your tastes onto everyone else. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I like the building!!
Go for it - Mr Wallen

Mr. Wallen -

I have no tattoos . . . I have no desire.
But other people do and I wish you and yours much success in your business.
A good, legal business for Fremont. Keep looking forward and up. A handful of people think they run Fremont and unfortunately they have in the past.
Time for new leadership. Maybe you should run!
I Appreciated your honesty in the letter you wrote.
Much success to you!

People of Fremont,
Just think of yellow as God rays of light shining down on a beautiful little building! Don't Hate!
