New bar in old place applies for liquor license

A familiar bar location that has been closed for several months is breathing new life, and members of the Dodge County Board of Supervisors will decide Wednesday morning whether or not to recommend a liquor license.

Supervisors meet at

9 a.m. Wednesday in the third floor county board room of the Dodge County Courthouse.

Tim Marsh, the owner of Uncle Larry’s,

2200 Proctor Road, just south of Fremont, is seeking at Class C liquor license that would allow the business to sell beer, wine and liquor on site for immediate consumption and packaged for customers to take with them, information released by the Dodge County Clerk’s Office stated.

Marsh said in an earlier interview with the Fremont Tribune that he and his wife Jessica, who have bought the property, want to open a sports bar there, not a strip club or topless bar.

“We want a place where patrons can participate in the entertainment through interactive contests, theme nights, karaoke, Golden Tee, dart and pool leagues as well as other events,” he said in the earlier story.

A public hearing has been scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Wednesday before supervisors vote whether or not to recommend the new liquor license.

we dont need another bar. NO NO NO.
for once, lets do the right thing and try and get a respectable business in this area and not another hangout for drunks and lowlifes. if it is allowed to open, will it have outside toilet areas? or will they just relieve themselves on the side of the building like they do in town?

So just because you go to a bar to have a drink or dinner or watch a game that makes you a drunk and lowlife??? Hmmm.....that's interesting......and wrong to judge!! Yes there are drunks and lowlifes but not everyone is like that! How dare you judge and stereo-type!

What type of business do you suggest would go in that location? As long as it's recpectable establishment let them, it's an empty building that's an eye sore to people entering town from that direction. GOOD LUCK Mr. & Mrs. Marsh!

If I'm not mistaken from the last 2 articles, a respectable business is exactly what Jessica and TJ are trying to establish here. And I'm willing to bet they will do one better than "outside toilet areas" and have real bathrooms. Novel idea I know. If you don't like bars, don't go to them. Lucky for the rest of Fremont you aren't the one making the decisions for the city.

Fremonter - Typical illogical thinking. Not everyone who goes to a "bar" is a drunk or a lowlife! Im pretty sure that there the bathrooms will get plenty of use. The actions of a few should never take away the ability for someone to make an honest living! You should be thankful that Tim is willing to stick his neck out and start a business in Fremont. If you havent noticed things are not all that great right now!

I stopped by the Bar to give the owner my Business card and the place looks great it is hard to believe that it was a nasty strip club I think Fremont needs a place like this. It will be a great place to stop after I get back from shopping in Omaha

What respectable business do you suggest? These types of business generate the mosting income in many towns, and my guess is Omaha/Lincoln are the same. There is nothing wrong with another bar in town, hopefully it stays alive. Fremont is tough to get a new business by regardless of what it's selling. Same goes to the restaurant opening in place of the old Wendy's good luck.

Good luck to Mr. & Mrs. Marsh. They are both great people that WILL run a respectable business. I am 100% in support of them and will patronize their establishment as will many of my friends and neighbors. We are looking forward to the grand opening!
Go for it

I say good luck. A nice, clean sports bar will be awesome. When I want to watch a game, I go to Omaha because that's where the best sports bars are. If there is one in Fremont, I will definately go there.

I hope the county remembers all the reasons given to deny reopening a bar in Ames. Do the right thing supervisors and deny this too, otherwise we will all see who is playing favorites.

I totally agree w/everyones comment against the fremonter. I'm the kind of person who likes everyone and well give anyone the benefit of the doubt. But what the fremonter is saying is just down right rude. Especially when you don't know the owners. I on the other do and can guarantee that Uncle Larry's will be an excellent place to stop in a have a drink. Whatever it may be. And I'm sure they would like for the fremonter to stop in and see what exactly they have been talking trash about this whole time. Maybe then they'll change their mind. As for Mr & Mrs Marsh-I personally wish you the best of luck. The building was an eyesore anyways.

I do not go to bars, I do not drink, heck I don't even smoke! But, many other people do and we should ALL support anyone opening a legal business in any community.
I hope they are very sucessful. I grow tired of people trying to put their "values" on others. Give this fine couple a chance to run a solid business and if you choose not to support it - don't go there.
I will probably go there and check it out. Maybe I can be a customer of food and soft drinks only. Again it is my choice.
The accusations about "low lifes" made me laugh out loud!!
This business should be approved and welcomed by Fremont and the area.
It is better than another downtown junk store.

Hey, fremonter:
I like your posts, but I can only semi-agree with you. Opening a bar, per se, does not automatically attract drunks and low-lifes. The problem is that Fremont simply has an over-abundance of drunks and low-lifes. So ANY business that opens in Fremont by default will have to cater to that crowd. Just take a gander at any of the Trib's local headlines for any given day: MIP's, sexual assaults, DUI's, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, possession of meth, vandalism, thefts, fights, and so on.
When I say Fremont is a hillbilly, redneck town, this is what I mean. I swear Fremont must have more crime than any other town of its size. It's true that at least the Necks aren't killing each other, but come on people, open your eyes.
That said, I agree with the rest that the bar should be granted a license. Besides, old 275 must have more cops than any other road in Nebraska.

The new owners should consider adding outdoor sand volleyball courts to their new bar. I know these have done well in Omaha and other smaller towns. This may help cater to the 'sports' side of their business and make good use of their outdoor area.

Why is no one complaining about this bar. The one that was going to open in Ames was all wrong and only going to be a bar. This bars right of a highway also. I hope the local L.E. sits outside there door. But because these owners are known in town its okay. That is how backwards fremont is. If your of some status its okay. If your a nobody run them out of town.

It is so sad that whenever a new business is featured in the Fremont Tribune that it has to be ridiculed by so many people. We need to start thinking about Fremont and the economic needs of our community. Just because a location has had a bad reputation in the past doesn't guarantee that all future businesses will follow that same path. The Marsh's have shown us that it is possible with alot of hard work that an ugly building can be revamped into a attractive site. And this is just the beginning, their enthusiasm has created a spark of interest into an area of town that needs an all round makeover. With a new group of people that could be frequenting this new business could also come other new economic trends to support our town. Is this not what we have all been working toward, more jobs, more businesses, more exciting community events. A bar does have a small percentage of people that are alcoholics and undesirables but that is life, that is not because that is only Fremont. Every city in the nation has a homeless problem, a disease problem and unfortunately a gang problem. We see very little of that because Omaha has housed them. Give the Marshes a chance to show their business spirit and do not squash what could be a new place to cheer on the Huskers, or bring new music to our somewhat silent town, and we could use some new food selections on this end of our growing community. I don't even drink but I would be excited to go and support a new place that has something fun to get involved in.

i love all the posts here that try to find a valid reason for opening another bar. its so pathetic. i dont know the people that are opening the business, but as i said we need a business thats more reputable than a bar. it will, i'm sure, just end up being another trouble spot. as some police officers have expressed to me, it will be just another stop for them to check out.

Sounds like it might be a nice kind of adult hangout. Like maybe a Keno type place. More power to them if that's the case.

I can't wait for it to open! I've already got my apartment rented and ready at Deerfield (within walking distance). I really wish it were a strip club though.

I guess if you are not a former stripper,it is much easier to open a bar. Good luck to the new owners, but it still wasn't fair to the "stripper". She would have cleaned up the eyesore in Ames too.

I love reading everyones comments and most of the time, I would never respond, but to "BOBO", and everyone else who always refers to this town as a redneck, hillbilly town due to the headlines in the tribune, well I guess anywhere you would move to would also be classified as that. Anywhere you move to the headlines are going to be the crime and bad news of the city, that is what sells. Human nature wants to read about sex/crime/drugs and so forth, not about the good news, it doesnt sell. For everyone who thinks this way, I would like to know where you are living in todays society that does not have bad headlines and has a population over 1,000. And to everyone else coming down on a new business opening, if you dont like it, dont go there, wow that is simple. Good Luck to the new establishment, and I look forward to not having to go to Omaha to watch paperview events and sports.

Congrats Tim on opening a new business. Its exactly what fremont needs.... i love reading the tribune online everyday just to read comments from some people. When I come back for a visit I will definetely stop in for a few drinks and maybe even bring you some piece of Arizona sports memorabilia that you can display in the bar.

Hey, XYZ:
It's not just the little trailer-park crime sprees that hillbilly-cize Fremont. It's people in Wal-Mart in their jammies at 3 in the afternoon. Teenage moms smoking in the cars with their kids and the windows rolled up. Dollar stores galore. That kind of stuff. But closing a strip joint is a step in the right direction. BTW, it's pay-per-view. And you don't need to go to Omaha, you can get it in your house.

Congratulations to the Marshs, however it seems to me that the Supervisors bias really shows. The former Lariat is right off the highway as is the bar in Ames. Both are to be opened as just bars, but as a former stripper Nielsen gets denied. Come on boys you can do better than that. I personally could care less whether topless or sport bar, I just like the idea that another business is working in Fremont that will be paying taxes to Fremont and Dodge county. Business is business. Too bad we have such a judgemental bunch of cronies running our city and county. I liked what used to be on the front door of the Lariat. "If this offends you, do not come in!" Instead of a judgemental bunch of fools deciding whose morals are good enough for owning a business in Fremont or Dodge county maybe they should leave their personal feelings at home and look at this strictly as it is. Business that pays taxes which is income for our city and county. I do wish the Marshs the best and I am glad they get to open, just sad that others are not treated with the same unbiased views by the stuffed shirts of the Board of Supervisors.
