NORTH PLATTE - Jon Nielsen ran for two touchdowns and Shea Leggott threw for two more to lead North Platte High School over Fremont High 34-0 Friday night.
The Bulldogs ended their season with a 2-7 record and the Tigers finished with a 1-7 record.
Nielsen busted loose for an 18-yard touchdown run to break the scoreless tie early in the second quarter.
"It was a weakside isolation play and we just overran the play a little bit," Fremont High head coach Kevin Meyer said. "They set that up with a fake punt and we were right there but just didn’t make the play."
North Platte led only 7-0 at halftime and Fremont came out with a fine drive on its first possession of the third quarter but a fumble at the Bulldogs 35 ended the threat.
From there it was all North Platte as the Bulldogs scored 27 straight including 21 in the fourth quarter.
Leggott connected with Taylor Williams on a 61-yard pass to put the Bulldogs up 13-0 midway through the third quarter.
Nielsen broke free for a 39-yard score early in the fourth and then Leggott tossed a 2-yard strike to Brent Polenske to give North Platte a 27-0 lead.
Bulldogs’ backup quarterback Justin Kemper added a 53-yard run late in the game for the final score. He fumbled the snap but the ball bounced right back into his hands and he sprinted around the Fremont defense which was crashing down on the play.
"It was a pretty close game until the fourth quarter," Meyer said. "We had a hard time moving the ball and gave them some short fields and then the game just got out of hand."
Each team fumbled twice. Leggott missed two field goals in the game from 33 and 34 yards respectively.
It was the final game in a Tigers’ uniform for 26 seniors – many of which were two-way starters and missed nearly 50 percent of the games this season.
"It’s such a good bunch and I know that we’re all disappointed with how the season turned out this year but we had some injuries that we couldn’t control," Meyer said. "I feel bad for those kids who were hurt and didn’t get to play much this year because they put a lot of time and effort into the program.
"We had a lot of kids step up and do a good job and hopefully those kids will get better and that experience will help next fall."
