LETTER: Lawmakers are responsible for this mess

By Robert L. Warner/Fremont

One hundred senators, 435 representatives, one president and nine Supreme Court justices are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country of ours.

They alone create deficits, inflation and high taxes. Special interest groups and lobbyists have no legal authority. They have no ability to force a senator, a congressman or a president to do one specific thing. It is the lawmakers’ responsibility to determine how they vote.

What is the legitimate role of government in a free society? Our founders answered this question when they created the Constitution. It outlines the legitimate powers of the federal government under Article 1-Section 8 "Powers Granted Congress."

Three-quarters of what Congress taxes us and spends our money for today is nowhere to be found on that list. To cite a few examples, there is no constitutional authority for Congress to subsidize farms, bail out banks or manage car companies.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of more than 300 million cannot control 545 people who stand convicted - by present facts - of incompetence and irresponsibility. If taxes and tax codes are unfair, it’s because they want it to be unfair. If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red.

We deploy our military world-wide, but our own borders are insecure. President Teddy Roosevelt’s idea on foreign policy was to "walk silent and carry a big stick." Not a bad idea.

We did not go to the aid of certain foreign countries and risk our lives in wars to defend their freedoms so that, decades later, they could come over here and tell us our constitution is a living document, and open to their interpretation of what’s right and what’s wrong.

It is said that 86 percent of Americans believe in God. So what’s the problem in having "In God We Trust" on our money or having "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why can’t we just tell the 14 percent to shut up and be quiet?

I don't have a problem with that....except now I think we need 530 some odd people with "a big stick" standing right behind everyone of these "representatives" and every time they do something out of greed, instead of what's right, SMACK!! Wonder how many would still be standing at the end of the day?? Not many I'd wager!!!

Great article, but how do we get this done. Sure, I know we vote them out. Sounds good, but the new elected in most cases are just as bad and the old leave laughing cause they just nailed us for lifetime health coverage and a big fat pension. Doesn't seem to make any difference on what level of government we are talking about, local or national, its just bigger rewards the future up the chain you go.

The entire Congress of the United States is corrupt. And I mean both Houses and I mean both major parties. There are a few Members of each House are Independents and at least one is a declared Socialist but, as a group of people, they are absolutely the most corrupt bunch to ever disgrace our Nation.

In November of 2010 the entire House of Representatives will have to stand for re-election; all 435 of them. One third of the Senate, a total of 33 of them, will also stand for re-election. Vote every incumbent out. No matter their Party affiliation.

Let's start all over in the House of Representatives with 435 people who have absolutely no experience in running that body, with no political favors owed to anyone but their own constituents. Let's make them understand that they work for us. They are answerable to us and they simply have to run that body with some common sense.

Two years later, in 2012, vote the next third of the incumbents in the Senate out. You'll know who they are because their names will be on the ballot and, in most cases, will be shown as the Incumbent. We can do the same thing in 2014 and, by that time we will have put all new people in that body as well.

We,the People, have got to take this Country back and we HAVE to do it peacefully….That's what the Framers of our Constitution envisioned.

Great article Bob! Too bad you aren't still on the council adding at least one of the few level heads governing our town. Keep up the good work and keep us informed.

Robert;

Where in the Constitution does it say "God" Now, before you jump me, I firmly believe in God. So using your point, there is constitutional authority for Congress to allow the printing of "In God We Trust" on our money.

What you also fail to observe, is the Constitution is to protect the minority from the majority. The 14% of those people who do not believe in God, have the right to disagree with you and in there case to tell you to "shut up and be quiet".

Read the Constitution, there is no reference to God. The only statement on religion is posted in Article VI Section III which states "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States".

Lawmakers are responsible for this mess.
really? are you sure? its about time someone other than me agrees with this statement. lawmakers dont give a hoot about us they only care about themselves and the ones who fill their pockets. its been that way for many many years. it just goes back to what i have always said. all lawmakers these days are only in it for themselves and their "friends". the wealthy put them there and the wealthy pay the least taxes and the wealthy get the most. please dont give me the crap about how much the wealthy pay due to all the things they have. the more they have the less they pay. theres always (legal or not) some kind of writeoff for them. prove me wrong. why do you think these people stay in office for so long? money talks and bs walks.

Willful ignorance and apathy are the reasons things have gotten this way. I'm sick of people with their feel good ideologies wanting into my wallet each time a new victim class is created. There was a reason that the vote was originally given only to people who had a stake and made a contribution to society. Which way do you think people are going to vote when they are handed a bottle of booze and a pack of smokes and driven to the voting booth? The Federal justice system is little more than a bunch of activist political hacks from both right and left with little interest in balanced interpretation of laws. Media doesn't report news, it manipulates public opinion- it pushes the canidates into the spotlight that the money interests support and marginalizes and smears the rest. McCain supported the war and Obama theoretically opposed the war in Iraq while supporting the war in Afghanistan only to get elected and continue Bush's policies. Same story on the Patriot act and warrentless wiretapping. The Government and the elite that own it are contemptuous of the people of this country, as Bill Maher eloquently pointed out we need to be dragged along because we are stupid. This is what Bush, Cheney, Obama and Biden think of us and that's why they are so at ease lying bald-faced with smiles on their faces. People waking up would be a nice start to changing things. Only fools buy into the mantra "diversity is strength" when the evidence is quite the contrary. Diversity is Balkanization, quagmire and paralysis. The reason things have gotten this way is because the American people have been factionalized into groups too busy bickering over peripheral issues to notice the country's being ripped right out from under their feet. It amazes me that opinion shows and politicians of both right and left openly call for legalization of illegals because they are "an untapped source of votes". This is the equivalent of a husband moving in another woman and telling the wife "she doesn't eat much and can help out around the house". Time for people to wake up and realize that the media selected politicians not only could care less about them but are more than ready to sell them out.

I think Thomas Jefferson was clear on what to do with a corrupt government.

"God forbid we should ever be 20. years without such a rebellion. The people can not be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. We have had 13. states independant 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century and a half for each state. What country ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure."

Are you going to watch/listen to the game today? Shop for shoes, get a beer, get your house ready for winter?
Have you taken at LEAST 1 hour out to even see what bills are before Congress and Senate? Not read them, just see what they are called? If you're reading this, you have a computer, just do a search on "Bills before Congress". Email or call your representative or senator and tell them what you think! We The People, are responsible, because we keep electing/re-electing these jerks into office!! ("That states" senator is a jerk, but mine is ok??). If you want change, CHANGE IT!! It is the height of ignorance to keep doing the SAME THING over and over, and expect different results!!! I agree that minorities need to be protected, for example, the minority that doesn't believe in God, thats fine, thats between them and God, I Won't force them to go to church, but that DOES NOT give them the right to tell me that I or my kids can't say a prayer just because they are in school!!! BOTH parties are just as corrupt and run by the same people. It took me some time, but I'm really starting to look at the Independant party. Get some people in there that FIRST will change THEIR retirement and medical plans and put them under the same that they give US, making it RETROACTIVE!! Then we'll see how fast they can actually fix anything!

Well said Bob. It is frustrating when you realize our "elected by us" representatives are not really working for us. Somewhere along the line they got the notion that we need to serve and be controlled by them. The reality is none of them work that hard and get lifetime pensions even if they don't hold office that long. This is just plain wrong. We as a people need to somehow band together and take back our country before it is too late.

I enjoyed the article. The author must think we live in a democracy. A place where 86 percent can tell the other 14 percent what to do. I am sure glad we live in a republic. Maybe the author should realize the difference. United State (republic) vs. Venizualla (democracy).

I actually agree with Bobby Warner. The state of the nation is directly linked to the incompetence of elected officials. But let's not forget to apply that line of thinking locally. Fremont for years has had so much potential. But yet it wallows in mediocrity. It has an aging, backwards populace complemented by a younger, undereducated working class. There is virtually no retail, and what little industrial base there is/was continues to shrink. And there's not much hope for improvement anytime soon.
It's funny how everyone wants to pile on Skippy for Fremont's sorry state. But Bobby's just as much to blame as Skippy, according to Bobby's own words; after all he too was an elected official. Case in point: Who knows how the "ordumbnance" will turn out in the courts. But know this: Fremont will FOREVER be known for 2 things: Bobby's ordumbnance, and Hormel. And they both stink.
How about this Bobby: maybe the 14% of the population should shut up and be quiet. But so should you. Please go away.

You want to trim some serious fat get rid of all the paid Federal holidays. How many billions are wasted paying Federal employees to loaf at home because it is George Washingtons birthday or MLK day?

Peter;
While the constitution may not reference God, the preamble to the Bill of Rights says that 'all men are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights'. These rights are life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Without a creator, there are no rights.
Brian
Nov 1, 2009 11:04 PM
The reason the founding forefathers stated that rights came from God & not man was that because rights from God could not be taken away by man. If rights came from man, then they could be taken away by man (ala government).
The many liberals that post on this site and other sites I debate politics/history/economics seem to think its more important that evryone is the "same". The fouding forfathers created this nation so that evryone would have the same "OPERTUNITY" for succsess. But human nature what it is some people are more responsible or have a stronger sense of responsibility than others. but Liberals think that no matter how hard or responsible someone is, its not "fair" to someonelse. So they put labels on evryone and pit them against each other. So the "great american melting pot" burns and simmers rather then melts. And political correctness of victimization determines more then personal values or work ethic.
As for voting out the incumbants, its easier said than done. In a recent debate on another site about what's worse big gov or big buis., someone pointed out that one could vote out bad gov. but not big business. That is not true. Nancy Pelosi recently laughed at a reporter who asked her about the constitutionality about Gov taking over health care. I can vote for president of the US, my Senators from Ne, and the reprsenative to congress from my district. But I cannot vote out any other member of US Senate or anyone else's district in the House of Rep. So Even If people from my state or distric were replaced I am powerless over other areas of the nation. But I can choose to NOT use a big business. For example, I can use a small local bank from the area as opposed to Bank Of America for my needs. I have no choice or power to vote out Pelosi from California.

Don;

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that refrence is in the Declaration of Independence. Also, creator is a diest term. Not everyone belived in the same God as you and I do. But you are half right, we in this country are all equal as long as you are white, christian, straight, and can prove beyond doubt that you were born here.

Peter, thank you for correcting me. This does not change the fact that our nation was founded on the belief that our rights come from a creator, not from the government. If people are not equal due to race, religion, sexual preference, etc, it is due to the government, not the Creator. We cannot think that we can remove our Creator and retain any rights.

Our Founding Fathers--10 of them were slaveholders, including George Washington--so much for being created with inalienable rights--as long as you weren't a slave (or native American). Where was the creator during that bit of hypocrisy?

No government is perfect, but ours has more freedom and a better Constitution than most. The Bill of Rights has done a pretty good job of correcting it. Most people I know don't study the issues, write to their Congressman, or even know what they stand for.

They know every player on the football team, what they eat for breakfast, and all their stats. If we had that much interest in, and gave that much scrutiny to, our elected officials we MIGHT be able to change things.

Until then, the lobbyists pretty much own our congressmen, because so much money is needed to run a campaign, especially in these times of "Sound Bites" during commercial breaks or slogans contrived and paid for at "town halls meetings".

Some of the town halls were legitimate, but the others were a farce.

My Mom is 100 years old, and her favorite saying is The True Golden Rule---"Those who have the gold make the rules."

Chris,
yes 10 of the founding fathers did own slaves which is tragic, but Washington freed his slaves voluntarily after our nation was formed.
Actually the slavery issue was dividing our nation back then. The Northern colonies did not want slavery in the new nation. You could not fight for freedom on one hand and have slaves as well. However, the Sothern colonies flat out stated that unless they were alowed to keep their slaves then they were NOT going to break away from Britain who let them have slaves. The founders knew that whatever chance they had to break away from Britian they had to have ALL 13 colonies. So they grudgingly allowed slavery and hoped to get rid of it in the future once the new nation was formed and established. So even in the 1770's the Slavery issue was dividing people.

I think it's almost humorous the way the people speaking out at town halls and supporting the tea parties are being attacked and smeared in an attempt to marginalize them. The status quo and their supporters are getting nervous that so many people are opening their eyes and peeling away from the system.

I can see some of you need to understand the Constitution a little bit better. The framers, framed this Constitution to protect property and businesses. The Bill of Rights (first 10 Amendments) wasn't added until later. If you study early cases of the Supreme Court you will see almost all decisions were handed down in favor of business. The Supreme Court back then and still today interrepts the Constitution in favor of business. Our Constitution is a wonderful document but the framers left it wide open to be interpretted according to how the Supreme Court wants to interpret at that time.

Justices Like John Marshall Harlan, Hugo Black, and the Warren Court did their best to protect peoples private rights. Now we are back to protecting business rights.

It all comes down to big business and corruption and greed. The government doesn't run this country, big business does!! No matter who is put in office, they can be bought!

to Aps,
The difference is night & day between the "illegals" and the slaves of the 1700 & 1800s.
1. The slaves in the past US had NO choice. They were captured by Muslims and sold to european traders and eventually to the US and other slave nations.
2. The illegals are first of all as you put it here in our nation illegaly by THEIR choice. IF they all decided to leave and go back to their native nation the vast majority of Americans would not only be happy but also would pitch in to help them get home. In fact most americans want immigrants here who want to become americans with proper background and medical checks. Not someone to take jobs and send parts of their paychecks to their home nation.
3. The illegals are not seen as "property" like the slaves of our past were.
Bottom line is that the illegals are here by choice and can leave by choice when they want to. They have FREEDOM.

To aps:
I think you got that wrong on illegals being slaves. Low wages, no benefits sounds like the majority of legal Fremont workers. Illegals seem to get more benefits (not job related) than the citizens of this country. Hospital bills paid, food stamps and many other programs. Even if a parent is illegal and the child is not, the child can receive all benefits and who do you think uses them? Mom & dad! So I don't particularly feel sorry for someone who breaks the law to be here, steals jobs from Americans and with the willingness to work for less forces down the wage base and as soon as they have bankrupted or depleted one area move on to another. So I really don't see any hispanic equivilents to slaves. Next time you are out and about check out the cars they are driving (probably newer than yours). Next time you have to pay for medicine or a doctor bill think how those so called slaves are being cared for medicially on you taxpaying dime but you are denied. Doesn't sound much like slavery to me.
