The start of the 2009-10 season was rough for the Midland Lutheran College men’s basketball team and not just in the win/loss column.
On the way to their season opener at Valley City State in North Dakota the team’s charter bus slid off the road and got stuck in the ditch. Two hours later the Warriors were back on the road but gametime was pushed back to 9 p.m. instead of the scheduled 4:30 p.m.
After a late start Friday, Midland was back on the court early Saturday evening at Jamestown College.
Midland lost both games, 69-61 to VCS and 70-39 to Jamestown, to start the season 0-2.
The Warriors gave VCS a run despite dealing with the travel issues. Jason Ahrens led MLC with 19 points while Alex Knobbe and Brandon Mach added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Chad Langemeier pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and also dished out a team-high three assists for Midland.
Calvin Kraft led VCS with 16 points.
The Warriors never got going against the Jimmies trailing 36-16 at halftime and ending the night shooting 21 percent from the field.
Ahrens again led the Warriors with 20 points. Ahrens and Mach had five rebounds each and Ahrens dished out two assists.
Byron Jones led four players in double figures for Jamestown with 14 points.
Midland is back in action Wednesday at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa.
