Bennington improved to 30-2 Tuesday night with a 25-17, 25-15, 25-23 over Arlington in the championship match of the C1-1 subdistrict volleyball tournament at Fremont High School.
Senior Erin Backhuus led the Badgers with 10 kills. Ashley Pearson added nine kills while Jessica Bird had six and Courtney Reiman five.
A Bennington hitting error and a Lexi Taylor kill helped Arlington tie the first set at 10, but the Badgers used an ace serve from Mackenzie Reynoso and two unforced errors to build at 16-10 lead.
Another Reynoso service ace broke a 4-4 tie and the Badgers never trailed the rest of the second set.
In the third set, a Tara Wasenius kill gave Arlington a 6-5 lead. Bennington, however, used kills from Backhuus and Bird to build a 16-12 advantage.
The Eagles stayed in contention. A Taylor kill cut the gap to 22-19 and the Eagles pulled to within 23-21 on a Wasenius kill. Sophomore Allie Leaver’s ace serve narrowed the advantage to 24-23 before the Badgers put the match away.
Brooke Burianek, a 6-1 middle blocker, led Arlington with seven kills. Taylor had six kills and four blocks. Riley Johnson had four kills and Wasenius added three.
The Badgers advance to the C-1 district championship match Friday night against Lincoln Lutheran at a site yet to be determined.
