Donald C. King, 60, of Fremont, an avid Husker fan, reached his final goal and graduated to his heavenly home on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Nye Pointe Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fremont.

Don was born Sept. 9, 1949, in Norfolk, the fifth child of Ted and Dorothy (Homan) King. He grew up on a farm near Newman Grove. Eventually he moved to Norfolk to live in a group home, where he attended Region 4 Workshop, He traveled home on the weekends to spend time with his parents. He then moved to Fremont in 1995 to live at Nye Pointe. The staff of Nye Pointe grew to love Don and provided excellent care for him. During the 14 years he lived in Fremont, Don spent much of his time working at Encor.

While living in Norfolk, he attended the Christian Church and after moving to Fremont he attended the Church of Christ.

Despite his many health challenges, Don showed us how to love, laugh and enjoy life. He had a strong faith in God and abundant love for his family and friends. He definitely had his dad’s sense of humor. Don participated in the Special Olympics and won medals for bowling, softball throw and the standing broad jump. Ever the Husker fan, his family decorated his room in red and white. Don will be missed by all who knew him and his laughter will ring in our hearts forever.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sibling, Donna Michael of Lincoln, DeAnna (and husband, Rodger) Langemeier of Fremont and Dean (and wife, Sharon) King of Newman Grove; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Leona King.

The funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with the Rev. Scott Cate of Platte Valley Church of Christ in Fremont officiating. Visitation will be 2:30-7 p.m. Sunday, with family receiving friends 2:30-4 p.m., at the funeral home. Visitation also will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Hope Cemetery in Newman Grove.

Expressions of sympathy may b given as memorials to Platte Valley Church of Christ in Fremont.

I met Don shortly after he began his residence at Nye Pointe where my Mother was recovering from an illness. What a remarkable young man! My brother also works at ENCOR and lives at a group home, so I understand the trials you may have faced in the past. The developmentally challenged are truly angels on earth. They harbour no hatred, only love unconditionally. I admire them all for the challenges they have faced and yet never give up. Don was a true Husker fan, whether they won or lost; and was very proud of the Special Olympics medals he won. In the few minutes I spoke to him I became awe-inspired at his determination to succeed with his goals. My sympathy to all who knew him, he will be forever missed.
In God's love,
