Capewell goal lifts Warriors past Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Seventh-seeded Midland Lutheran College upset second-seeded University of Sioux Falls 2-1 in overtime Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament.

Sioux Falls scored first at the 29:27-mark of the first half when Ryan Trupe scored on an assist from Matt Wolfe.

Midland tied it at 40:20 when Mark McMeekin scored off a Danny Pollard assist.

The game remained tied at 1 after a scoreless second half. At 93:02, Rob Capewell crossed from the right side to the left corner of the net and hit in an assist from Jake Corum.

Goalkeepers Eric Vrba of Midland and Patrick Purdy of Sioux Falls had five saves apiece. The Warriors had 13 shots, led by three each by Pollard and Capewell. Capewell’s goal was the only shot of overtime.

The Warriors, 8-8-1, advance to Saturday’s semifinal round. Midland will play third-seeded Morningside, 12-6-1, at 3 p.m. Morningside downed sixth-seeded Briar Cliff 2-0 in Sioux City, Iowa.

On the other half of the bracket, top-seeded Hastings cruised to a 4-0 home win over eighth-seeded Dordt while Doane, the No. 4 seed, used a Kyle Smith goal to down Dana 1-0 in Crete.

Doane, 10-8, will face Hastings, 14-3, at 6 Saturday night on the Broncos’ home field. The championship match will be Nov. 12 at the highest remaining seed.
