Cougars end Lady Warriors’ season

Midland Lutheran College’s volleyball season came to an end Wednesday with a 3-2 loss at the University of Sioux Falls in the first round of the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament.

Eighth seeded USF won the match over the No. 9 seeded Lady Warriors 22-25, 30-28, 25-11, 19-25, 15-9.

Midland’s Halie Wewel recorded a game-high 18 kills and teammates Amanda Hunt added 10 and Megan Levesque nine.

Kaylie Heberly put up 45 set assists for the Lady Warriors and Britni Putnam tallied a team-high 29 digs.

Kinzie VanVoorst and Amber Sneller led USF with 12 kills apiece. Samantha Haffke led the Cougars’ two-setter system with 24 set assists and Sneller added 20.

Midland ended the season with an 8-18 record.

In other first round games it was: No. 5 seed Dordt 3, No. 12 seed Mount Marty 0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-21); No. 7 seed Dana 3 over No. 10 seed Concordia 1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21); and No. 6 seed Briar Cliff 3, No. 11 seed Dakota Wesleyan 1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 25-15). The top four seeds: Northwestern, Hastings, Morningside and Doane all had first-round byes. The second round will be played Saturday.
