MLC sputters in second half, falls to Grand View

DES MOINES -- A cold second half plagued the Midland Lutheran College men’s basketball team Wednesday night in a 72-58 loss to Grand View University.

GVU led 37-34 at the half but the outscored the Warriors 35-24 in the second half to improve to 3-0- on the season. Midland drops to 0-3 on the season.

Jason Ahrens’ jumper nine minutes into the game put the Warriors up 16-14 but it was their final lead of the night. A minute later freshman Gavin Blum tied the game at 17-17 with a foul shot and from there it was all GVU.

Grand View went ahead 33-26 with 4:15 to play in the first half but the Warriors battled back and Eric Pieper made it 37-34 with a layup with 11 seconds before halftime.

A 12-0 run early in the second half gave GVU a 54-41 lead and they led 70-52 with 3:20 to play.

Ahrens led all scoring with 19 points and Zach Rosenboom added 18 for Midland. Chad Langemeier also hit double figures ending with 10. Ahrens and Langemeier each pulled down eight rebounds and Ahrens also led with six assists.

Joey Terpstra led four GVU players in double figures with 14 points and Matt Banzhaf added 13.
