Midland suffers road loss

DES MOINES, Iowa - Grand View used a 19-6 first-half scoring run to take control and defeat Midland Lutheran College 79-54 Friday night in women’s basketball.

A basket by Tricia Hoffman of the Lady Warriors cut Grand View’s lead to 24-20 with 8:12 left in the first half, but the host school scored 19 of the next 25 points to lead 43-26 at halftime.

Hoffman scored half of her team’s first-half points and finished with a team-high 18 points and added four rebounds.

Grand View, however, used a balanced attack to build the 17-point halftime lead. Amy Vos came off the bench to score nine of her 11 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Bailey Schechinger, Danielle Ballard and fellow starter Jennifer Jorgensen added eight points apiece in the first half.

Jamie Sickles had five points during an 11-2 run to open the second half that extended Grand View’s lead to 54-28.

Midland was limited to 37.9 percent shooting from the field, including 33.3 percent in the second half. The Lady Warriors were also hampered by 23 turnovers.

Carly Horky and Sharlay Butler had eight points each for the Lady Warriors. Kelli Hermsmeyer had four assists and Horky grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

The Lady Warriors face Iowa Wesleyan at 4 Saturday afternoon in a second-day game of the Grand View Classic.
