After getting off to a slow start, Wisner-Pilger got rolling in the second game and never looked back in defeating Wahoo Neumann 19-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-18 in the C1-3 district volleyball final Friday night at Fremont High School.
Both teams played even halfway through the first game before Neumann went on a 9-2 run to put it away.
"We got off to a great start with the (Game 1) win", Neumann coach Shelley Hagemann said. "But Wisner-Pilger did a great job of adjusting and an excellent job of executing their game plan by taking our top hitters out of the game."
After the Gators' Game 3 win gave them a 2-1 lead, they got a huge boost in Game 4 by racing to a 15-6 lead. Neumann battled back to cut the gap to 19-15 before Wisner-Pilger closed out the match.
"We had too many unforced errors - 15 to be exact", Wisner-Pilger coach Jean Groth said, "but we did a much better job adjusting in games two, three and four."
Wisner-Pilger advances to its first state volleyball tournament since the Gators’ Class C-2 runner-up finish in 2001.
The Gators are unofficially the seventh seed and will likely play defending C-1 champion Columbus Scotus. The Shamrocks (21-5) qualified via the wild-card route after a five-set loss to 32-0 Grand Island Central Catholic.
Wahoo Neumann ends its season at 22-7.
The C-1 matches will be played at Lincoln Northeast High School.
