You won’t necessarily need loads of hairspray, parachute pants or jelly shoes to enjoy Wahoo High School’s fall musical.
Then again, those things wouldn’t hurt.
The school is putting on the musical “Back to the ’80s” tonight through Sunday at Wahoo Elementary.
Tonight and Saturday’s performances are scheduled for 7 p.m., while Sunday’s show will be at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door.
The musical focuses on the senior class during the 1980s at the fictitious William Ocean High School as seen through the eyes of 30-year-old Corey Palmer, played by Wahoo Middle School teacher John Harris.
The younger Corey is portrayed by senior Kyle Willis. Michael Feldman, played by senior Jake Barry, and Tiffany Houston (senior Megan Brown) are other main characters in the musical, said Julie Anderson, who is co-director of the play with Diane Reece.
Corey’s memories about his high school days are accompanied by songs from that era, Anderson said.
Songs audiences can expect to hear include: “Footloose,” “Love Shack,” “Let’s Hear if for the Boy,” “Material Girl” and many others. There even is a performance of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.”
Anderson thinks those who attend the performances will enjoy the trip down memory lane.
“The music’s going to take them back, especially people that grew up in that time and with all of the fads and fashion,” Anderson said. “I just think it’s going to be a time of reminiscing and thinking back about what was going on the past 20 years or so.”
Anderson said approximately 40 students are participating in the musical. There also is a seven-piece band that will play all of the background music to the songs.
Anderson said the students have embraced the era depicted in the musical, making trips to thrift stores to gets clothing from the 1980s.
She also believes the students enjoy singing songs that were made before they were born.
“It’s amazing to me just how kids today do really appreciate music of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s,” Anderson said.
