NORTH BEND — Wayne stung North Bend with big plays Friday night and the Tigers could not counter with any of their own.

The Blue Devils, playing in their season opener, gained a three-touchdown lead less than 6 1/2 minutes into North Bend’s home opener and added a pair of TDs within a 2 1/2-minute span of the third quarter for a 35-0 victory. The Tigers dropped to 0-2.

Derek Poutre scored on runs of 31, 59 and 41 yards on Wayne’s first three possessions, none of which lasted more than five plays. The Blue Devils totaled 204 yards by then.

“We have to show up the first quarter,” said North Bend coach Tony Allgood. “That’s two weeks in a row. You can’t come out there hoping for things. You have to come out knowing you’re going to do things.”

North Bend, which netted two yards on its first two drives, put together a 12-play possession after falling behind by 21 points. The Tigers started on their 17 after an illegal blocking penalty and picked up three first downs to reach the Wayne 26.

A false start penalty and a two-yard loss forced a second-and-17 and the threat ended when Connor Emanuel’s fourth-down pass to Kale Wietfeld was broken up by Levi Kenny in the end zone.

Emanuel gained 30 yards on the drive with six carries.

“Offensively, we got better tonight,” Allgood said. “We had some drives that were good. We’d move the ball and then do something to hurt ourselves.”

The teams traded possessions twice before Wayne threatened to score again before halftime. After starting at their 49, the Blue Devils reached the North Bend 13. Wietfeld intercepted a deflected pass to keep the margin at 21 points.

North Bend received the second-half kickoff, getting a 25-yard return from Wietfield, and moved to the Wayne 32. Shawn Davie then stepped in front of an Emanuel pass on fourth down and returned it 71 yards for a touchdown. The Blue Devils’ next possession lasted just two plays, a 50-yard gain by Poutre and an 18-yard touchdown pass from Gage Rethwisch to Justin Anderson. Rethwisch’s fifth PAT kick boosted the margin to 35 points and the continuous running clock began with 5:30 left in the third period.

Allgood made some personnel changes following a 32-7 loss to Battle Creek opening night.

He moved Eli Vosler from tight end and Chris O’Connor from fullback into the offensive line. Michael Shaw, a 6-foot, 270-pound senior, played center after sitting out the Battle Creek game with an injury.

“It’s going to take a little while for those guys to get used to those spots,” Allgood said.

Despite the 0-2 start, Allgood remains positive with his players.

“The kids played hard,” he said. “And they’re classy out there.”
