Midland teams suffer setbacks in first round

The Midland Lutheran College soccer teams lost their opening-round games of the NAIA national soccer tournament on Saturday.

Midland’s women were outshot 12-4 but lost just 1-0 at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill.

Columbia College scored three goals in the second half to hand Midland’s men at 3-0 loss in Columbia, Mo.

All four shots by the Midland women were on goal with Felicia Trujillo, Brooke Giebler, Amanda Grable and Nicola Hermes each taking one.

Six of McKendree’s shots were on goal.

Midland goalie Sorina Mychackavane made six saves and Liz Yanko stopped four for MU.

Sarah Eckelkamp scored unassisted 10 minutes into the second half.

Three of Midland’s men’s eight shots in the game were on goal. Jonathan Chavez, Jake Corum and Rob Capewell each had a shot on goal.

The Warriors’ goal keeper Eric Vrba was peppered with 11 shots on goal, making eight saves.

Midland’s women ended the season 16-4-1 and the men ended 10-9-1.
