Capturing the Moment
Digital photography gives way to endless possibilities

By Debra Jacobsen/Tribune Correspondent

The year of crazy eights. It’s a big deal. 8-8-08.

"Aug. 8 is a Friday, that will be a popular date," said John Landauer of Landauer Photography.

Don't bet on finding a wedding photographer - unless you play your cards right.

Focus on planning ahead - and make sure the photographer is a good match.

"A bride and groom should look for a photographer as soon as they know the date, time and venue," said Vance Wagener of Fremont, photographic artist at VW Photography.

"If you want a June date, plan 12-18 months out," Landauer said.

Both photographers are already scheduling into 2009.

There are some last-minute deals to be had if a photographer isn’t already booked. But it's risky, Landauer said.

Make sure the photographer suits your style.

"You’ve got to like them - you spend (many) hours with them," Wagener said.

It's important to preview the photographer's current work.

There are collections for various budgets and tastes.

Locally, packages can run from $600 to $6,000 or more. Destination weddings add additional costs.

"In this area, there are two distinct sales models for weddings," Wagener said.

In the traditional style, a package with albums and prints is purchased.

"We followed that tradition for 15 years. Three years ago we switched to a modular model. We sell (only) the services you want," Wagener said. "In the old model we sold paper. In the new model we sell time, experience, skill ...."

The most comprehensive collection Landauer offers includes a copyright released CD and custom-designed fusion art book. All packages include online viewing and ordering.

"This year there is simplicity in (wedding) style - elegance," Landauer said.

But now there is complexity and detail in photography.

"Multiple depths and layers," Landauer said. "Something in focus, something blurred."

Close-ups include not only rings, but shoes, necklaces and pew bows.

Silhouettes are well liked, Landauer said.

"Brides are looking for halftones, selected color and unusual angles - just don't go overboard," Wagener said.

Whether traditional, illustrative or photojournalistic - there is flexibility in the finished products.

"Flush mounts are still the fun style of albums," Landauer said.

The custom one-of-a-kind albums have replaced traditional matted photos.

"Couples are innovative, creative and computer savvy," said Wagener, adding, "There are all sorts of creative ways to use digital negatives."

From scrapbooking to slide shows.

Photo jewelry is still strong, and photo purses are new this year, Landauer said.

Landauer noted about 40 percent of couples order a signature board designed from engagement photos. Those boards are often used at prenuptial events and receptions.

Cards are a big deal.

All part of the digital craze.
