Fremont Police Chief Tim Mullen oversees a staff of 39 sworn officers, as well as six police reserve officers. Mullen has served as chief since 1989.Steve Tellatin is the deputy chief of police. His responsibilities include police records, police communications and the III-CORPS Drug Task Force.
Detective Lt. Greg Chamberlain supervises a four-member detective bureau. He also is the department’s training officer. The detective bureau investigates major crimes. Violent crime is below national average.
The Fremont Police Station also includes the Communication Center through which all E911 emergency calls are routed. Four full-time, two part-time and six reserve communications operators and four secretaries serve as support personnel. The police department operation also includes the III CORPS Drug Task Force, a K-9 unit and the Nebraska State Patrol maintains an office in the station.
The Dodge County Enhanced E911 Program is coordinated through the police station. The department participates in Community Policing. Community Policing officers and detectives frequently speak to school children and organizations about a variety of crime prevention topics. Fremont officers are active in programs including School Resource Officer, Adopt-A-Cop, bike patrol, youth at risk, gang resistance and the TRIAD (retired community) Program.

Dodge County Sheriff
Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen oversees a staff of 16 deputies who provide law enforcement in rural areas and towns throughout Dodge County.His chief deputy is B.J. Reynolds.
The sheriff’s office is on the first floor of the Dodge County Judicial Center, 428 N. Broad St., in Fremont.
A lead investigator heads the criminal investigation division while three sergeants oversee the uniform patrol division. Civil process is handled by one deputy. There are four sheriff’s office secretaries and four dispatchers. The Dodge County dispatchers are also responsible for routing all E911 calls outside of Fremont in this 911 area for emergency services.
The department is involved in the Team Nebraska program and will also speak about bicycle and firearm safety, defensive driving, etc. Team Nebraska is a new program for all elementary school students kindergarten through sixth grade. This agency’s operation also includes the III Corps Drug Task Force. The sheriff’s department, along with the Fremont Police Department, is also very involved in the TRIAD program for senior citizens throughout Dodge County. Through TRIAD, law enforcement personnel help senior citizens protect themselves from consumer fraud and other crimes.

Cutting Crime
Residents can help fight or prevent crime these ways:- Neighborhood Watch is designed to help residents deter crime in their neighborhoods. Participants watch for anything or anyone suspicious and notify the police department at 727-2677. There are more than 35 Neighborhood Watch areas throughout Fremont. There is no cost to participate. Signs and other membership materials are provided.
- McGruff House program works with more than 100 Fremont homeowners who offer their homes as a safe place for children on the way to or from school. Children who are lost or who need help can look for a sign in a home’s window with a picture of McGruff the Crime Dog. Participants are screened by police.
- TRIAD is a program established for crime prevention in the retired community. For more information on the TRIAD Program, call 727-2687.
- Crime Stoppers Inc. solves many crimes in Fremont. Tipsters call the police department anonymously at 727-4002, with information on crimes or suspects. Callers are given a code number. If an arrest is made because of the tip, the caller could receive a reward as high as $1,000. Reward money comes from private donations, grants and criminals’ restitution payments.
